questions on night lighing

Just because it's the longest wave length in the spectrum doesn't mean snakes can't see it. Who knows, maybe they can see infrared?

Infrareds wave legnth is roughtly 750 nm, BP's cant see naything longer then 494 nm. and if you dissagree then you need ot talk to this biologist, and inform him his paper is wrong on Ballpythons sight spectrum and retna structure.

it shouldnt be an argument, red heat lamps are sold under the basis that they have next to no visible light ro nocturnal animals, people on here have been saying it for years ive been told by the pet store, the breeder i got him from, other snake owners i know that they cannot see red light, there eyes lack "Cones" which are required to see that area of the light spectrum. sorry to say but i did do my research i didnt just hop on here and truct joe blow.

I just have a question for you... I once bought a Zoo Med red light, and if you look straight into it, it''s very bright. I believe only the glass is red, so I still doubt that the snakes aren't bothered by it.

you would think so but since our retinas react to the red light spectrum the can become irritated by it. snakes eyes proses so little of this light spectrum they are unaware of it and it wouldn't be of much bother. Ball Python retinas are composed of only 10% cones the rest are densely packed rods, since the cones are the only thing that see that spectrum area they only get 10% of it if that. some parts of the retina are totally devoid of cones. its like if we were 90% blind. thats pretty much dead blind. in which case you could hold a 200W bulb to your eye and it would burn it before you were irritated from its light.

Respect, most people just keep yappping off and wont admit when they are misinformed. Its not an argument of if your a stupid person of course you're not you seem to know your stuff as well.


on a side note, with the red light i caught my BP drinking for the second time only lol guess that large lump in his belly made him a lil parched
