    The quit smoking thread!
i remember reading a New Years resolution thread and seeing quite a few people that wanted to quit smoking this year. well guess what? so do i. and i know i can.. and i know YOU can. i know it has been done before, many times, by human people just like us. so it is possible. quit telling yourself that it isn't. (i need to quit telling myself the same) i've also read that people have a much higher success rate of quitting when they have support and people to go through it with. since all my friends are heathens (;)) and refuse to put em down, i come here for support. plus i'm at work right now, about 36 hours in, about to pull my hair out and scream at an undeserving customer. if i wasn't writing this thread, i'd be outside lighting one up, so this is giving me something to do. it doesn't help that this is what i'll be standing right next to for the next 8 hours...

    http://imageshack.us/a/img441/1834/photoaum.jpg

every time a customer comes in and buys some they pass right through my hands.. so close. right there in front of me. tempting me. whispering sweet nothings in my ear. it's torture. but i know it won't last and my lungs and wallet will thank me eventually. so if you're quitting too, i'll support you if you support me. lol and if you're one of those heathens that refuse to quit, tell me an interesting fact or something to stimulate my mind. lol

My last smoke was 354 days ago...wasn't easy then, still isn't easy all the time, but definitely possible to stop. I still want to light one up almost on a daily basis, but honestly, I'm feeling better, keep myself more active and motivated, and saving money. Good luck to you...just popped in because I feel like as soon as I think I've "quit" and am in the clear, I'll be back to a pack a day within the week.

Just keep telling yourself that you will never smoke another cigarette again. Everyday you do not have a cigarette, you will be a non smoker. I have not had one since October of 89 but I still occasionally have that urge when I get a wiff of someone lighting up. I also know that if I had a cigarette today, I would be a smoker again tomorrow. I will wish you strong will as you do not need good luck. If you need incentive, think of a morph you really want and calculate how long it will take you to save the money by not buying cigarettes. Then do it and go get that morph. We are here for you.

At my work smokers go out for "smoke breaks" all the time. They prolly get at least an extra 30-45minutes of break time a day. Essentially they get paid to smoke for like 3hrs a week. If i touch my phone i get written up though. It angers me beyond written description.

Id never take up the habit myself. The habit itself doesnt bother me much. Its not a gross habit imo. What youre breathing in and what it does to your body is yucky though haha. Ive tried cigars before and theyre ok. The smell cigarette smoke doesnt even bother me really. I just hate that smokers are treated differently at my work.

see when i quit for a while i couldnt stand the smell of them. some people would come up to me right after smoking and i would literally almost gag. and the whole break thing is the same way at my work. that was part of the reason i kept smoking for so long. to get the extra little breaks. im about to start tellin the boss i need a "smoke" break and just go sit outside for 5 minutes at a time. lol you should do the same. use it to check your phone. lol

I smoke marijuana and thats about it. Yes it is medical, yes legally. Its the only medical drug that takes away my spinal pain from a car accident when I was 14.

But I vaporize it so I dont inhale any smoke at all.

I never plan on smoking cigarettes though. My mother does and always has and I HATE it. Its just NASTY!

Im new here but feel I should chime in.. Tried cold turkey last year with about a 2 week success but then started smoking even more then b4 I quit.. I'm determined to kick it this year! Doing it diff tho bought 20$ worth of bubblegum and I allow myself 3 smokes per day trying to "ween" myself off them. I like the idea of saving the 7$ a day to go towards something I want like car parts and soon to b snakes since I feel a new addiction coming on.

Stay strong an it can be done I've had 4 so far this year and I'm of work tnrw so prolly won't get the urge once..

Hardest part. Is not lighting up everytime I get in the car that's where the gum comes in.. And playing the music really loud and banging the steering. Wheel to the beat of the song lol

Ive tried. If i pushed it enough then im sure smokers would lose their special privileges but then they'd all be cranky and hate me. Not really worth it i guess. Its sorta always a card i keep in my hand should i ever need to play it haha. ;)

i am DEFINITELY cranky if i don't have my fix. which is why i'm trying to get outta the circle. i stress because i want a cigarette, i want a cigarette because i'm stressed. luckily for me my boss already knows I'm trying to quit and said i can go outside for a 5 minute "smoke" break to take a breather and get away from crazy customers for a minute. lol

man to be honest i dip and smoke. i can go days without one if i have the other. just different ways for the nicotine to get into your blood. i actually went a year just dipping and not smoking.. to me "quitting smoking" is quitting nicotine. whether you're smoking or chewing you're still getting that nicotine fix. i don't wanna be a slave to nicotine at all any more, no matter how it gets in me. lol

There's all sorts of reasons people quit smoking...health should be the #1 concern, but what really did it for me was writing down everything I spent every time I picked up a pack. Not only cigarette costs, but every time I'd go into a store, I'd also get a coffee, a monster, a bagel, or a lighter, or something else. Seeing that written down on paper for a month or so really bothered me. Since I stopped smoking, the additional expenses have gone down considerably as well.

Well I smoked a good few years of my life. I have asthma that hasn't really bothered me since I was a kid, but after smoking a few years it bothers me now more than ever.

In September of 2011, I purchased an Ecigarette from tim thumb, the cheap one with disposable cartridges. I have not since touched a cigarette. I only puffed on the Ecigarette for about 4 or 5 months after that, then I forgot I even had the dang thing lol.

But, I can say that no matter what some say about the Ecigarette not working, I know it works!! I haven't smoke one in over a year now, and been nicotine free for almost the same. It feels so good to not buy a pack every day!!!

I just quit smoking almost four weeks ago. I have done it cold turkey this time around. I am so sick of smelling like a stinky cigarette and also of hacking up portions of my lungs. I feel so much better already and I am saving a decent amount of money too. I will be rewarding myself with a new snake addition this coming spring or summer if I stick with it. I also just joined a gym yesterday. I think that working out will help in my fight to kick the nasty habit.

I switched back and forth from cigarettes to the www.smoke51.com E-cig for months. When I decided to quit it only took me 4 days on the E-cig. I wasn't trying to quit nicotine, it just happened. After about 4 days I was over the addicting chemicals in the cigarettes that I wasn't getting in the E-cig. That is the hard part. Not being rid of the nicotine, but the other 1000's of addictive stuff in cigarettes. At the end of that 4th day I just didn't want it anymore. So my last cigarette was around halloween 2011. I've had a couple desires since then but resisting is easy.

For those trying to quit. . . .
    YOU CAN DO IT!

Good luck! I was supposed to quit on the first, but I forgot :) Ha HA!
I'll be starting Sunday. I work with smokers, so I thought a non-workday would be a good first day. After I get a smoke free day or two in, it should be a little easier to resist the temptation when others do it.

I'm excited! I'm going to have so much money when I combine what I'll be saving daily with my nest egg that I've been lovingly referring to as my "oxygen tank fund". Of course, I'd have to be a seven pack a day smoker to save as much money as I've spent in my head, but it'll all work itself out.

Again, good luck to anyone who's going for it. Quitting is an unpleasant experience, but it feels really good to be able to say you've succeeded.

Man... I've been considering quitting for a couple months now. I started smoking when I was 18 and just turned 22, but I live with a pack a day smoker who has no intentions of quitting (especially since he cut down on drinking). My mom keeps asking if I'll quit if she grabs an e-cig kit for me and I think that might help me out (I also bite my nails, and I think it would be good to occupy the oral fixation part of the habit or I might lose my whole fingertips)

i quit 3 years ago..i smoked sence i was 12 and im 27 now...i stole my dads cig growing up...when i found out i was prego with my daughter i tried and i couldnt do it for the first 3 months than i helped my dad clean his walls in his house and as we were taking downt he pictures in the living room you could see all the nasty crap left behind from 2 smokers in the house and i didnt pick another one up after that...it was hard for the first year i wantte one soooooooooooooo bad..but i found twizzlers and became addictted to them instead..but now after 3 years...i find it harder to quit bitting my nails and to stop using curse words than it was to quit smoking..you can do it....make a list of reason you want too and keep it with you in your wallet and when you have that craving...read it...or if you have kids look at there picture every time you want one and think you never want your kids to go through what you are trying to quit....

Stick with it man, I quit about 6 years ago after smoking for about 14 years, and it is totally worth it. I have even run a full marathon recently :) Every day that you don't buy a pack, put $5 in a snake project can. When you are still smoking you found a way to spend 5 a day so why not do the same thing for something positive. Best of luck man!

I've been using my eGo e-cig for 6 months now. The first thing that I noticed after a couple of days, is that I could smell other smokers. I always think to myself,"Ewww! that is what I smelled like for 26 years." The good thing about re-fillable e-cigs, is that you can get nicotine-free liquid for them if you choose. If you have made it 3 days without a cigarette, congratulations! That is the first step. The physical addiction to nicotine is broken. The rest is mental. If you think that you need a cigarette, it's just that, thinking...:gj:

My bf had awesome success quitting with the E-cig. After awhile he quit even using it except rarely. He's been smoke free around 3 years now and doesn't even struggle much with it. If he does have the urge he grabs the E-cig.

but good news: it's getting easier. i think it'll be more of a downhill journey from here on out. those first 3 days might as well have been water board torture. lol

EDIT: The forum also has a thread called the "Beer-Off" that has been going on for a few years. It started with alcoholism but there are plenty of other addictions discussed in there. I've been reading it since it started and there is some great insight in there.

    You can do it.
I was so, so addicted to nicotine, and smoked a half a pack to a pack a day (sometimes more if I was partying) for 4 ish years.

I finally decided I was going to quit in University and I did. It was tough, and I slipped up a couple times at the beginning when I was stressed, but here I am almost 4 years later smoke-free.

When you get the urge, going for a walk helps. Sipping cool water helps.

I still get cravings a lot of the time. I'm hoping that will end soon.

When I had the occasional urge shortly after quitting the water trick did help. Instead of a cigarette, which was easily accessed I would drink 2 large glasses of water and go do something to free my mind.

I started smoking cloves occasionally when I was 17. When I turned 18 was when I started buying packs, and started working at a restaurant. That's probably the worst place to be if you want to quit: pretty much EVERYONE smokes, and everyone goes in little cliques for smoke breaks. You get left out a lot if you don't smoke...

Then I moved out and BAM, I was a pack a day smoker. Had to smoke on the hour, every hour I was awake. If I was partying and/or drinking (which I did a lot of), I smoked more.

For various health reasons, I quit. I watched my grandmother go through all sorts of hell because of smoking and I was like "what am I doing?" I had a few relapses but I'm proud to say that I am a non-smoker. Unless you count an occasional hookah. ;) You just need an iron will and to know that it's a lot easier to quit now than it is to fight whatever diseases you could potentially get from continuing the habit!

Gum was my thing though. I always had packs of gum around, so when I wanted to smoke a cig, I chewed a piece of gum.

you haven't hit a cigarette in four years and you still get cravings? if that's not discouraging i don't know what is. lol when i quit for 7 months i had got to the point where i didn't even think about them at all, even when i was out drinking. finishing up day 8 without any now. been chewing gum nonstop, and the cravings are mostly gone.. the only time i get bad ones now is after a big meal.

I quit for the final time probably 4 years ago now. I had smoked for about 20 years. 2...sometimes 3 packs a day.

I had to quit a couple of times.

    Last time stuck.

There's two parts to quitting...breaking the nicotine addiction itself and breaking the habit. Everytime I got in the car I lit up. Everytime I got up in the morning, I lit up. Got home, lit up. 10AM, outside to light up. Finish eating...light a cig. etc etc.

    http://www.soap.com/p/nicorette-loze...r-108-ct-49000

First I had to break the habits. Those lozenges are what I used. A couple of days of those and i was craving those more than the cigarettes. It helped to break the habit. I didn't get in the car and reach for a cig. I didn't wake up and reach for my cigs.

I used the lozenges for a while...maybe 5 months. The smoking habits were gone, I just needed to break the physical addiction. That took one weekend. I didn't buy any lozenges, stayed in my apartment, watched TV and played games all weekend. That was probably 4 years ago now.

No cigarettes or nicotine of any kind since then. No cravings, no nothing. I can smell smoke on people now. No desire to go back to smoking.

I've paused a few times. Can't really say that I've quit because I haven't. But I've made it from a few days to about four months at the longest (since this thread, I quit for my entire pregnancy and for a couple of months after).

Chantix has been the most effective helper that I've tried, but it makes me feel so bad that I have a hard time sticking with it.

I respectfully disagree that it's that easy. I certainly know my share of people who've quit cold turkey and I respect that kind of will power. But it's rarely as simple as just taking a smoking cessation aid or telling yourself that you aren't going to smoke anymore.

I'll quit at some point. (Hadn't posted on here previously, but I'll state my intent now.) I'm well aware that I use it as a crutch for my anxiety, and between an addiction to nicotine and an addiction to my narcotic for emergency panic relief, well.... I'll gladly take the nicotine.
