Idk which one it is,...
Probably a bit of both,.. but are people getting lazier or are we just consistently exposed to more lazy people through the internet? I get tired of seeing the same questions asked over and over with the same responses back to back, especially for basic info.
If you have the same exact question as someone else, what makes people think that their answer will be any different than the previous person. Who asked five or ten minutes ago, one or two threads below or above theirs.
These days with the internet you can find info on just about any and everything out there without leaving your home. But some people are still too lazy to do their own research. They'd rather ask a question and sit back with their mouth open being spoon fed the info. Unfortunately it's reality off the net as well.
But if that info contradicts what they heard, were told, may already know or even want to hear (true, sound, knowledgeable info) they get hot as K9 peppa (as my momma would say :)). All of a sudden you're wrong, don't know what you're talking about or hating on someone,... Really?!
More often than not when I was younger and had a question, my parents (or who I asked) would answer it. But sometimes they told me to look it up, and come tell them what I found. Whether they knew the answer to the question or not. I didn't always like it, but it helped me in the long run. I was more likely to remember the info since I actually put in time and effort to find the answer, more so than just someone telling me. Which taught me that I can't and shouldn't always trust what people say, let alone what's written some where.
Until this day I rarely take someone's word for face value with out doing my own research and having my own info to verify and back it up. Yeah we all have different opinions and ways of doing things, but that's when research and checking your sources should come into play. Along with keeping an open mind and taking in that info for what it is whether you like it, or not.
Like others I also enjoy chatting about common interests with others. But sometimes there are just too many wtf moments, let someone else answer it and why should I even bother. We all need a break sometimes, unfortunately on or off the net those breaks are few and far between.
My rant for the day or actually quite some time since I don't do it often.
-
Yes questions are repetitive especially at this time of the year when first owner get their very first snake, or first time breeder hatch their very first clutch, what you need to remember is that for the person who ask the question it is the first time that they ask.
Some people go look for answers some do not just like in real life the good news if that if you are tired of answering the same question over and over again all you have to do is leave it to someone else. :gj:
No one forces you to answer question over and over again ;)
-
I know I have options and I don't have to answer the questions but we're all here to help right, so at times I do. That doesn't change the fact that some of the answers don't or haven't changed, they're the same across the board and are easy to find. Google, Bing or what ever just about ever site has a search engine to help out. It may take time to find it, but it's there. In some cases it takes just about as much time to find the answer as it does to post the question and get a response. But why actually look when you can ask and wait,.. too much effort for some, maybe.
This is in general, not just bps.
-
If I had just joined this site and picked your post for my first to read I would probably get infractions on my first day
-
Re: Idk which one it is,...
Lol I'm sure some people would be and are offended by it whether it applies to them or not, but it is what it is.
-
-
I suppose I can see where you're coming from, though I don't agree with it.
-
I could Google, or Bing, or search whatever... But at the end of the day, I'd rather hear feedback from numerous people rather than trust a care sheet or article.
Why?
If I went and did my own research, and it was wrong, I'd come here to clarify.
When I come here and admit a mistake, everyone would jump on me for making a 'stupid' mistake and 'trusting a caresheet from the internet'. When I should have been 'properly researching'.
Yet if I were to post here with questions you've already answered (but I'm trying to clarify), you get bothered by that too.
Which would you prefer? Trial and error from someone new to the hobby, who might be scared to trust information from posted pages on various websites? Or someone coming here to get more direct, experienced responses, as well as more current information?
No matter what they do, it's wrong. And as a newer member of the hobby, yes, we know it's frustrating to ask questions all the time. But I'd rather you get mad at me for asking questions than get mad at me for pretending I know what I'm talking about and give my snake a belly burn that kills it.
:confusd:

im getting tired of threads like this ranting about how people ask the same questions similar to the mods an people when i go on my off topic tangents. If you dont like it dont read it an dont answer. You complaining about it isnt going to change people asking the same questions over an over. Some people arnt computer savy an dont kno there way around the web that well or simply dont search for it or need to be reasured that this is the correct way to do something. Either way it is what it is. Its something you have to deal with on the web.
-
Also, as well as not being computer savvy, if its your first forum, you may have no idea how they work. I didn't, this is my very first forum ever. Yes it can get tiresome answering the same question over and over. Just don't answer, move on to a different thread. Plenty of people will answer. There are loads of extremely patient people here, who will repeatedly offer up their advice.

That's why it's a rant in the off topic section, it's what people do to get things of their chest. Whether someone else agrees with it, like's it or not doesn't matter. You never know maybe it encourages someone to do a search on this site or another and check their sources before asking a question and maybe it won't.
Like I said you shouldn't believe everything you hear or read from just anybody or anything anyway. The same goes for what you see at times, Just because a group of people agree on something or do things a certain way doesn't mean you should blindly follow suite.
The computer savvy excuse is old they've been around in one way, shape, form or another for decades now. In homes, companies, schools, libraries you name it. How to do a search is basic info right up there with the power button. Since after you turn it on you should learn how to use it, find what you're looking for or need to know.
It's the same as some people claiming they can't use proper grammar or even punctuation's because they're using their phone to post. No,.. in most cases they're just lazy, it may or may not take more time to do it but you can.
Lazy and or impatient, wanting everything yesterday without working, doing very little if anything to get it, seems to be the norm more so than not for some.
-
Ive seen plenty of posts like yours complaining about people who post the same stuff. What makes your post different than the others who complain about the same thing lol? :P
Also on a completely unrelated note, what is up with the italics. Im having trouble figuring out what tone you want me to read this post in. Sarcastic? Stern? Pissed off?
-
I was trying to figure out why the different font/type too. Almost as annoying to read, as someone asking the same question......

:D I've seen them too and I obviously feel the same way they do. To answer your question I've been using italics just about as long as I've been writing and typing. There's nothing sarcastic, stern or pissed off about it. So nothing to figure out just a style of writing just like many others. Which goes back to what I said before, just because a group of people do things a certain way doesn't mean you should blindly follow suite.
-
But what if you wanna say something sarcastic?
-
Just say it, it doesn't change anything, to add to it just plug a  some where in there.
-
It's so hard to read emotion on the internet anyhow. I do think the whole thing comes across with that tone in italics.

Lol I have to say, I really find italics annoying when used in excess. If you want a different font there's an option for that. :gj:
http://www.writingservices.eu/Italics-When-Use-Them.htm
Also, I find it quite rude when someone assumes people should have knowledge of how to navigate the internet. Sure they've been around awhile, but people who have been around longer than computers tend to find it difficult to navigate. Not everyone, but really, how many people have you heard of that laugh at the fact that their moms or dads suck with technology? lol

Except that it's a very reasonable excuse that has merit. Not everyone knows how to do things online. Just because you know it, doesn't mean everyone else does. My mother is 50. Five years ago, she didn't know how to use a forum, let alone the search function. There's millions of people that are just like her five years ago, today.
Alright. You claim that after you turn on a computer, that you should learn how to use it, which would also include proper upkeep and maintenance. So, question for you. Do you know how to ping a website, find a list of all the hardware on your computer, and edit your IP/subnet mask/DNS? These are three basic things. If you answer no to any one of these, then you have no right to complain about people not being computer savvy.

I'm glad you've shown that you know how to use a search engine, congratulations. But the reason why I use italics has already been stated, if I wanted to change it I would have.

Both of you obviously missed where I said "in most cases" meaning it doesn't apply to everyone. But to answer your question, yes actually I can do quite a few of those and for what I don't know, I can do like Kdreptiles just showed they also know how to do and run a search on how to. If for what ever reason that doesn't work then I'll take it upon myself and find someone who does know how. See how that works, and we're back to my original post.
Lol did anybody miss the sarcasm this time, because I didn't use any smileys until now :D .
-
My point still stands.
I think the majority of people here would rather have the same question asked time after time again, than have someone post that their snake died from a common, but easily fixed mistake. As many of my professors have told me over the years, "There's no such thing as a stupid question, ask it because someone else might be wondering the same thing."

But it's not a different style of writing... it's intended for grammar use. You're using it improperly. (how is that any different than someone not using a search engine properly?)

Re: Idk which one it is,...
There's really no reason to exaggerate the situation and take it out of context. When and where did I say not to ask any questions or even that they were stupid questions? Once again go back to my original post within the first two sentences where I said "I get tired of seeing the same questions asked over and over with the same responses back to back, especially for basic info". Forums and websites have stickies and FAQ sections for a reason but what's the point if people don't take the time to find and read it before asking. Other than for those who actually do and will.
There's nothing wrong with finding the answer to your own question, just means that you now know the answer and don't have to ask or just want to verify it. Because if it's on this site or another then it must be true right, likely for some info but not always.
Sometimes peoples guilty conscience thinks the talk is about them, so when the shoe fits,... they run with it.

Right about there. By accusing people of not being able to find 'basic information' when they 'should know how to operate a search function' is not directly calling someone stupid or saying their questions are stupid, but you are mocking them and openly critiquing how they navigate a website, how they operate within that website and you are judging their abilities or lackthereof by openly complaining about it. No, you did not call them stupid or say they had stupid questions, but if I were to be critiqued for asking a question, you can bet that I understand just fine that you think less of me because of my actions. And that is a negative response to someone who is trying to do the right thing and find answers.
You said above that:

So where do you propose people look for their information? This is what I don't get. People critique members for following a caresheet that has incorrect data. But if they come here and post, asking about 'basic information', you tell them you are tired of answering the same questions over and over.
So, where should they go? Should they spend hours upon hours of reading the internet, every article, multiple forums and multiple people to compare information and try and deduce which would be best? What if someone has a full time job, drives two hours every day to go to work and only has about 30 minutes of free time a night, which includes taking care of their animals? Like me? Am I supposed to spend hours upon hours trying to compare information, when I can go to this forum, post my situation and problem and get a more immediate response to a potential problem? Or would you rather I wait several days to try and figure out if my Ball has scale rot or a burn and compare websites that state different ways to treat it? What if I don't know if it requires a vet or not?
There are no stupid answers. Only judgmental people that forget there are people behind the screen, and that we don't know their stories. You have every right to complain, and I have every right to defend people's questions. We encourage people to take good care of their pets. So why would we turn them away and make them afraid to ask questions with threads like these?
We shouldn't be turning people away for asking 'basic questions'. Threads like these serve no purpose, other than to complain about people and their behavior, which isn't fair. Not everyone has experience, in reptiles or technology. And if that bothers you, then perhaps public forums are just too stressful for you, what with all the new members we're trying to get involved in the hobby and turn into a positive thing

Funny how something so insignificant seems to bother you so much :confusd:
Asking questions and sharing knowledge isn't it what a forum is about? :confuzd:
Here is a tip (because life is too short to dwell on the little things): If I don't like to answer or see the same question over and over again I just don't answer, and if it was getting to the point where it would bother me too much I would even re-evaluate my forum participation.
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/a...ys/Sarcasm.gif
Or of course I could complain about it which I guess would be a better use of my time and probably would make a big difference and change everything.

Haha, love the sarcasm alert sign. I needed that on one of my responses here, because it was clearly missed.
Also, new people and their "duplicate questions" are part of what keeps this forum so active with new stuff all the time.

Considering the amount of websites that have the wrong information? I'd rather get it from a forum. With caresheets that are randomly found online, you have no idea if it was written by a person who's owned the animal for a few weeks, or a few decades. At least on a forum, the majority will know what they're talking about and give similar information while correcting the person who's wrong.

I don't personally know you to think less of you or anyone else on here. But is it annoying to ask a question when the answer is right in front of you at times,... yes. The same way some are annoyed by my post :). The rest of the comment is redundant and has already been explained some of which starts right after what you highlighted.

We all have our days where things irritate us to a point where we need to vent, this one's no different. Most of your comment I also already acknowledged in previous posts. Except for re-evaluating my forum participation, look to the left and check my stats I don't spend much time here. That too goes back to my original post, last paragraph to be exact.

And once again regurged info that I already mentioned. With a forum or most sites for that matter you have FAQ's, Important or Need to Know Info, Sticky threads or what ever you want to call it. Since people commonly have the same issues and the solution is the same. Why have it when few people use them. Other than for those who actually take the time to do so.

You can't be serious, even though I know you are. This isn't a English class, paper, business or even anything professional along those lines. Italics is a type / style (or what ever word you want to use ) of writing just like Arial, Calligraphy or Old School Graffiti. Which I also previously mentioned why I use it.

Honestly, I was just bugging you to make a point lol. :D But now that you've replied seriously to it, I have to be nitpicky...
Those three mentioned are fonts. There is a reason why italics is next to bold and underline, rather than in the font section. :gj::gj:

I specifically said website, and most I've seen don't have a FAQ. There's a link to the caresheet and that's it. However, like I mentioned, these can be written by just about anyone. There's actually a website that ranks high on google that looks legit, but isn't.

Nitpick all you want fonts are still different styles / types of writing, you can use bold print or italics along with it making them apart of your specific style. I choose to use times new roman w/ italics for my posts nothing more nothing less.

Or maybe even encourage some to look for answers to basic info before asking, now that the locations have been posted I don't know how many times. Since more than likely the same question was asked and answered recently, but then again, probably not.
