Who is a reader?
And what good books have you read lately? Always looking for a recommendation for a book to read.
For the ladies- Fifty Shades of Grey series... :D. I just got my nose out of those, loved them.

The dark tower series is my favorite series. My favorite author is Kathy Reichs, and my favorite book is When the Wind Blows by James Patterson.

I dont read much anymore but i used to read alot of stephen king and i read like 80% of the Scarpetta novels. I really should finish the scarpetta novels bc i really did enjoy them! My favorite King novels were 'Salems Lot and The Stand. I also have liked alot of Michael Crichton's stuff. Prey and Next were both awesome books. I loved the topic and highly recommend both of them. If your not into that kinda stuff then i wouldnt bother with it though so read read the back first or a brief online description. I was pissed when i found out he died, really sad bc he was fairly young.
Nowadays i do most reading on here or reading magazines like Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Reptiles, readers digest... thats about it.
If anyone has any reccomendations similar to anything i listed above^ then feel free to let me know!
-
Ooh, I forgot about James Patterson. I did like those too.

I loved the dark tower series, its only second to the Malazan series which is one of those types that takes a bit getting into, the first book is VERY slow, but it is well worth it. Only tip is to not get attached to anyone =(. All of my animals are named after characters in the books :D
-
Just finished the hunger games series, that was pretty good.
-
Neal Stephenson and George R. R. Martin are two of the best (fiction) authors out there IMO.
Be warned about Martin, however - if you get into the Song of Ice & Fire novels, you'll wind up angry, because he takes FOREVER to write the next one in the series. :)
-
I still need to read the Hunger Games. I bought them, but my husband started reading them.

The Hunger Games novels are FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. I hated the simplistic writing style...and the first person perspective...but once I got past that (pet-peeves of mine), I LOVED them. I felt like I had physically lost a part of my soul when I finished them. I didn't know what to do with myself. lol. It's that kind of story. Read them!
What are the 50 Shades of Grey novels about? I've heard a lot of hype on them, but nothing about the story.

Well, they classify them as erotic romance. Not sure how much I can say on here. But I was lost at the end of those. Thinking I may read again. Go check out Christian Grey! You won't be sorry :-)

Sales for rope went up by like 90% after 50 shades of grey came out... lmfao
-
I'm a huge reader and have been since I was young. I read very fast and can thankfully retain everything, if left alone I will devour 3-4books a day.
I also read anything and everything! However, I have not read the 50 Shades of Gray series, even though everybody and their mamma has been recommending it to me.
Some really good books I have read recently and recommend are:
The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning
"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy
"Catch 22" by Joseph Heller (because I laugh every-time I read this).
I also recommend just about anything by Robin McKinley. She was my all time favorite author growing up and her books "The Blue Sword", and "The Hero and the Crown" are still among my all time favorite books today. I've read "The Blue Sword" so many times growing up, that all the pages fell out, and for my birthday last year my mom got me a new copy haha.

Lee Child has the Jack Reacher series that is awesome.

Re: Who is a reader?
I love anything by Jodi Picoult, and I've recently discovered Lisa Scottoline, and her books are fantastic.
For light romance reading, I'm really enjoying Robyn Carr's Virgin River series.
My favorite book EVER is The Promise, by Donna Boyd (it's a werewolf story).
The Ten Little Bloodhound series by Virginia Lanier are also very good (it's an older series).
I also like James Patterson, Jonathan Kellerman, Faye Kellerman (his wife), Harlan Coben, Dean Koontz, Robin Cook to name a few.
If you have a Kindle - I highly recommend this book - Robin: Lady of Legend (The Classic Adventures of the Girl Who Became Robin Hood)

Re: Who is a reader?
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN is amazing... I started the series A song of ice and fire end of May and I'm half way through the third book in the series. They are lengthy books (1st book 800+ pages 2nd book 900+ pages and 3rd book 1000+ pages) but I can't put the son of a B's down... Yesterday I started reading at 5 p.m. looked at my clock and it was 10:30 haha I recommend these books to anyone... I even got my 80 year old Grandma to start them up! He take's forever to write them but they are well worth the wait, i'm glad he takes his time cause they are amazing books.

Yes, unfortunately that one is. It's an Indie writer, but the book is very good. Loaned it to my mother after I read it, and she couldn't put it down. You can get a free Kindle reader for your PC though, and get it that way!

I'm not much of a reader, however the wife is and she just finished the 50 Shades books (all 3). Those books make for a HAPPY WIFE & LIFE!!!!:D I asked her when more of those books were coming out.

I'm a voracious bookworm, and have been since I was in grade school. Primarily in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres.
Fantasy: Charles de Lint is awesome. I enjoy Mercedes Lackey.
Science Fiction: Alan Dean Foster, and James White
Science Fantasy: Anne McCaffrey
Dark Fantasy: Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, PN Elrod, Kim Harrison, Tanya Huff (the list goes on, I love this genre)
Animal Fantasy: A Rustle in the Grass, The Book of Night With Moon, The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West, Watership Down, Tailchaser's Song, The White Bone
Horror: Clive Barker, Michael McDowell
I could go on...and on.... lol

We agree on that. Tolkien was a master of the craft of writing. While Harry Potter is good in that it has gotten kids (and adults) to read who otherwise wouldn't, it's really not my cup of tea (or coffee, or beer, or <insert beverage here>). The same could be said of The Hunger Games. Tolkien isn't for everyone, though, as his style doesn't make for "light reading." That said, if you're willing to put in the effort, his books will reward you for it.
Oh, and if classic sci-fi is what you're after, you really can't go wrong with Heinlein. Also, Orson Scott Card's "Ender" novels are phenomenal.

I read all kinds of stuff. As long as its a good book, why not? So what kind of book I read varies.

John Dies at the End by David Wong (A writer at Cracked.com if anyone goes there) the sequel is out later this year. One of the best books I've read. It's dark humor fiction, here is a quote about the dog in the book,
“And watch out for Molly. See if she does anything unusual. There’s something I don’t trust about the way she exploded and then came back from the dead like that.”
P.S. They already made it into a movie, it was at Sundance, hasn't been released yet.
-
I did read Harry Potter--it petered out to a pathetic, half-hearted ending. I TRIED to read Tolkien. I read The Hobbit. I started on the trilogy, and put it down about halfway through.
I just couldn't get past the 'son of such and such, sired by whosit, descended from whatshisname', style. It was like reading Beowulf--which was fine, but only in a small dose. I've always had issues with 'high fantasy' anyhow, though. I can't do Asimov, either--'hard SF', lol. I don't mind flowery, long-winded writing (Lovecraft, etc), but something about that particular style just didn't do it for me.
More Jim Butcher, less Robert Jordan, lol.

You need to read them then! If you werent west coast id be happy to let you borrow them. Since theyre so old you can get used copies at flea markets or wherever for cheap. I would suggest reading 1-3 (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King) then go back and read The Hobbit afterwards. If youre good at absorbing and retaining info then when you go back and read the Hobbit it will fill in some cool stuff. The Hobbit takes place before #1 so you dont even have to read it to understand books 1-3 but it is my favorite. I first read the Hobbit in 4th grade. Ive read it at least 4-5 times since. SUCH a good book.

Read LOTR series next!! Then the Hobbit. I must warn you though there are multiple other offshoots of the original series that you can read too. Like the Simarillion, The Children of Hurin, Unfinished Tales which i believe includes the Legend of Tom Bombadil, The Legend of Sigurd, and The History of Middle Earth. Also he did a re-write of the story Beowulf i believe but i havent read it yet.
You will get sucked into it for like a month or two and start speaking in Elven to your husband... Youve been warned...:D

I know exactly what you mean. None of his works are really easy reads. BUT if you just ignore that stuff on the first read through then youll still understand like 90% of the story. And then when you read it a second time it makes it like a billion times easier to connect dots and stuff. :gj:

Hands down. The twilight series. I mean who doesnt love some gay vampires and werewolves?
I just love reading that series I read it atleast 3 times by now.
-
AND just kidding.
I almost burned my sisters twilight books when she brought them home lol.
I read anything fantasy really, the Eragon series (forgot the name of the series), Fable haven, Halo the video game series, World of warcraft series, Star wars. Stuff that takes me far away from earth :D
-
Don't think I would be interested in twilight either...

My favorite book is The Descent by Jeff Long, and I really enjoyed his Year One too. No one carries any of his other books (I don't know why) so I'll have to order all his other ones from Amazon probably.
I also really like Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child's books, Mount Dragon is my favorite from them.
Can't beat the Lord of the Rings, awesome books and some of my favorite movies.
My second favorite book is probably Stephan King's The Stand (the uncut and complete version): holy cow I LOVED that book. Desperation is my second fave from him and I enjoyed Pet Sematary too.
I've only read the first Hunger Games and though I enjoyed it (and the movie) and would like to read the last two, I have to say it's a complete rip off of Koushun Takami's Battle Royale novel (sorry HG lovers). So I really recommend that book and it is one of my all time faves.
Right now I am reading Memoirs of a Geisha and I love it, I want to watch the movie after I'm done with the book to see how it compares.

I love reading adult paranormal romance (adult vampire reads). I've read Hunger Games, Twilights, Fifty shades of Grey.
You may like the Anita Blake Series by Laurell Hamilton (very adult and like 21 books). Awesome I've read them all 3 times.
Black Daggar Brotherhood by JR Ward
Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks. Very steamy. Top 5 favorite series.
Southern Vampire Series sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris also top 5.
Hope this list helps someone who's looking for a new series. Also, all authors are still writing these series.

For those that thought the Hunger games was simplistic....you should look up Battle Royale, it's pretty much the same plot, but MUCH more realistic imo, just the mindsets of the characters were so much more believable. That was a good read...even if it was a bit violent.
-
I'm sure that I'm alone on this one, but I would much prefer to read scholarly journals (mainly published by IEEE or MIT-CSAIL) or even technical manuals over literature any day.

I actually do read other books mainly about animals reptiles, mammals, aquatic but don't enjoy them as much as a book I can get lost in on a rainy day.

hmmm the Wicked Lovely series I feel in love with, Twilight series yes I did love and not sure why it was a bigger hit than any harry potter series but then everyone decided they hated it but ok, right now I'm reading City of Bones then theres City of Ashes and City of Glass but right now it's really good Wicked Lovely series has to do with Fairies, romance, royalty and war/violence through out the series, and the City series has to do with romance and demons :)

How has no one mentioned the great Sir Terry Pratchett?! :O

I just watched the movie 3 days ago! Holy crap that was super bloody and I can understand why the US banned it. It was more than just a BIT violent. The Hunger Games actually is based off of Battle Royale.

Aha the US didn't ban it! I have the book that I bought from Barnes & Noble on my desk...also the movie was terrible xD The plot was all screwed up, and the end was much different.
Also the Mortal Instruments series IS pretty good! Just read that one too. :D
