UTH Question

Bought a UTH and placed it underneath the side where my snakes hide is. Just wondering if thats a bad idea or not saying as he spends a decent amount of time in there?

Do you think it will burn him or will this be fine?

Also I was having striking problems with him, but did take him out this morning and he just sat in my hand. I put him back into his cage and a few minutes later took him out again. Did not try to strike me once. Maybe the first day I had him he was having a rough day with the car ride and temps being low.

His temps right now are 84.3F with a humidity hovering around 50%

What are you using to measure your temps? Because UTHs get up to 130+, and that's not good.

You should measure the temperatures under his hide with a digital thermometer that has a probe on it and use a thermostat to adjust temperatures. UTH can get pretty hot if the temps arent being controlled.

When you first get your snake home, you should give it 1-2 weeks without being disturbed(unless to give it water) so it can adjust to its new environment.

Your temps sound low to me. What are you using to measure temps?

My guess is they are not using a probe. Probably just a stick on something, because we all know those UTHs get way hotter than that.

what are u using forsubstrate?... if the UTH is under the tank and u are u usin aspen of coconut husk fiber u caan control the ground temp by simple making the substrate thicker or thinner where the UTH hide.... and also u should have atleast to hides for the snake to be happy ... a warm hide and a cooler one , so he/she doesnt has to choose between temp n security ... currently i have mine set up so that its half under the hot hide and half under the area where the water dish sits so it stays a lil warm to.

Do you have a thermostat connected to the UTH that controls the heat put out by the UTH? If not, it is of the utmost importance that you order one (usually on-line). Also, as others have mentioned, the instrument you use for measuring the warm and cool side temps is very important. Many people use Acu-Rite thermometers and/or an IR temp gun. The Acu-Rite will also measure ambient temps and humidity.

If the temp that you quoted was for the warm side, it is too low. Try to get the temp up to about 92F and the cool side about 82F with the ambient temps being about 82F. Humidity ought to be about 50-60% constant.

Since you just received your snake, it is always best to allow them time to feel secure in their new environment. This translates into not holding them for a week or so, or for a few days after you've given them their first meal. Some people even wait until after they have eaten a couple of times, ensuring a well acclimated snake.

It might be a great idea to post pictures of your enclosure if you think you'd like some help with it... But, again, a thermostat is a hugely important husbandry tool

you should definitely get a thermostat to control the UTH. you cant control the temps by making the substrate thicker because the ball python will eventually make its way down to the glass and if your UTH is too hot it can possibly get burned. a thermostat and a thinner layer of substrate will give you the best control over the UTH temperature.

I don't see the herpstat on there. I tried to go to the website, and it's down. I would really hope he's not out of business, because they are an awesome company. As far as customer service response and shipping times, they are the best company i've ever done business with.

This is not a reliable method of controlling temps. Many BP's will move substrate out of the way and burrow down to get to the heat source. Most of mine do, so there is a good chance yours will also.

If your BP moves substrate out of the way it could quite possibly be burned. As mentioned before UTH's get very hot when not controlled with a thermostat.

So like everyone else said, get a t-stat.

I use only Herpstat and Helix and if I needed to only choose one I would choose the Herpstat II for my needs
