The guy kicking didn't throw the kick properly. Notice how it looked like was kicking a soccer ball. You need to angle those kicks in from the side by rotating your hips, so if your opponent does check it with his upper shin, most of the force is deflected away and not directly back at your shin (causing a break). At least thats how I have been taught....
