My condolences. Would have been a nice looking snake. Congrats on the one that made it.

Oh Heather - I'm so sorry! I thought at first it was an axanthic black pastel - do they initially hatch silvery looking? I'm happy for you for the healthy one though!

Re: WARNING: Not for the faint of heart...

Oh Heather, how very sad. I do thank you though for sharing this with our membership. It's awfully easy this time of year to get overly excited about all the egg hatching and new hatchling pictures and forget that there is sometimes a harsh side to breeding snakes. Things don't always go as planned and even when we do our best, nature sometimes has another plan. I think your sharing these pictures is a good thing for those that want to breed these snakes to see.

Re: WARNING: Not for the faint of heart...

Thanks for sharing that with us Heather. I had an Albino that hatched just like that 2 years ago. I say hatched, but it only got half way out of the egg before it expired. It is heartbreaking to say the least, but definitely something that breeders need to be prepared to see.

p.s. I am not sure that this is related to wet substrate, as in my Albino clutch, there was 8 eggs. 1 went bad, the Albino was deformed, and the remaining 6 eggs hatched out fine with no problems. I would think if the wet substrate was the issue, the survivor would have had problems too. Did you try adding some dry substrate to the box during incubation to absorb some of the excess water?

Oh Heather.. how awful. I am so sorry for your loss, but thank you for sharing. Every bit of information for future breeders, whether its good or bad results, is important knowledge gained. I am glad that one made it, and it is beautiful.
