As for the water at the bottom, are they glazed all over or is the bottom still bare ceramic? The cat dishes I use are totally glazed all over and never have that problem.
Your right, they are not glazed at the bottom. The moisture thing makes sence. Like the bowls are sweating or something like that. I will look into buying some that are glazed on the bottom as well the next time I purchase them.

I use a mixture of souffle cups, ceramic dishes, and deli cups with PVC couplers.
The couplers, and dishes all get thrown in the dishwasher once a week. Otherwise, the deli cups get thrown of course...but like Ed, they are recycleable!

So, why are you having trouble finding big bags of aspen then?

if you have a lot of dishes, just invest in a dishwasher
Good thought. I really wish I didn't live in an apt, and could get a dedicated snake setup going. I think two sets of water dishes and a dedicated dishwasher would be the more eco-friendly way to go.
Right now I am using the inserts, but I stockpile the old ones that are still in good shape. When I get a couple hundred there I'll do a light bleach solution to clean them and get a second use out of them. I don't like creating that waste.
Maybe we can teach our BP's to drink out of those sippers that rats use??? Just kidding

I got mine from foodservice direct and they are all #5 plastic...we can only recycle #1 and #2 plastics here..
