I'm always picky when it comes to genetics, because it's the least understood aspect of the hobby, and the one area where bad advice is given constantly.
If this conversation were about how to ensure proper temperature, and someone recommended the little analog dial gauges, they would be jumped from all sides in a heartbeat. Giving equally credible advice about breeding prospects however, is apparently welcome.

His point is exactly that it doesn't matter for him, because he *does* know, but plenty of the people here asking questions DON'T know. That's why they're asking!
That's why if you say "het means it carries one copy of the gene needed to make a morph" then it will confuse them when they're going to look for a het spider or pastel
I said it in the terms of our hobby. It's called a "het". Sorry you 2 don't feel that way. But that's what people refer to when they say het, and you both know that.
I am perfectly aware of genetics, and nothing I said was incorrect. So again, why are we making such a fuss over this?

Why? Because not everyone around here are "perfectly aware". Here are a few samples, for fun, try and count the incorrect answers given...

Re: How do you know...?
So your going to hold me accountable for not fully explaining what a het or homo is? I thought it was gone over quite thoroughly here, and I didn't see the need to reexplain it in this thread.

Yes, we know it, which is why we're able to explain it to people who don't. You know it too, so why are you unable? Actually I think the second time was more accurate, but I also think this would work: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=52847
"het" is (almost always) referring to a carrier for a recessive trait; I think "het" is distinct from "heterozygous" in this sense. But I also think it's good to explain said distinction.

So now I'm unable to explain genetics?
Thanks, because your dictionary wording about the yellow belly was spot on!

Now how is that at all different from what I just said, and what you guys just jumped on me about??

like this "But I also think it's good to explain said distinction."
Although I don't know what you mean by dictionary definition...I didn't really realize there were dictionaries for snake genetics...Everything I've learned has been from here.

Lol, again. I don't know why I have to explain what het and homo is, when it was gone through already in this thread. my "it's called a 'het'" was more of just an after thought as to why people call recessive hets 'hets'.
I didn't see the use of saying it again, when everyone else already had.

well only because you offered an explanation. If you don't want to give one, by all means, don't! I don't think it's your responsibility at all. But as someone who does understand it, I do think it's our responsibility to not give information that is actually inaccurate, or implies something that would be inaccurate.
