I replace my aspen every 7 days, and water gets changed every other day, along with the bowls getting cleaned in hot water.
If we're still talking about hypothetical scale rot, it would be best to put the snake on paper substrate (newsprint, kraft paper, paper towels). This way the substrate is thoroughly cleaned each time with no hidden spots, the humidity is totally controlled, and nothing sticks to the wounds of the scale rot.
