IMO, monthly is just too long. That substrate is going to soak up all the urine it can. Just spot cleaning, that isn't getting the soiled bedding out, unless you replace a handfull of mulch every time the snake passes urates, and urine, or poop. Which would be pointless, when you can just dump the whole tank/tub out and replace the bedding.
I replace my aspen every 7 days, and water gets changed every other day, along with the bowls getting cleaned in hot water.

Look at the Lowes website for Acu-Rite digital thermometer/hygrometer. They're 12 bucks and totally worth it. That said, a temp gun is also a good investment to get spot temps that have a teeny error of margin.

If we're still talking about hypothetical scale rot, it would be best to put the snake on paper substrate (newsprint, kraft paper, paper towels). This way the substrate is thoroughly cleaned each time with no hidden spots, the humidity is totally controlled, and nothing sticks to the wounds of the scale rot.

Alright, My B.
I thought you were talking in general, and figured your using some type of mulch.
I was thinking about using paper, though. I have to clean the rack YET AGAIN today, after I just did it 3 days ago. These little turds like tipping thier bowls, and pooing right after I clean the tubs and replace the aspen.

The unit itself reads the ambient temp and the humidity.
