Many US rat snakes got a bad reputation when pet stores tried selling wild-caught specimens (many years back) & sadly, most do NOT deserve that reputation now. But many TX leucy-rat snakes still do, from what I've read? Some US rat snakes have always been calm too- like Baird's or Trans Pecos- you'd like them.
I had a Trans Pecos rat snake years ago .... very , very cute .. but so nervous and reclusive - just didn’t cut it as a display snake
