    New owner question

Hello! I’m a new owner, bought the first BP about a month ago and picked up the second one Friday. The first one was sold as a regular and the second they said was a Double Het. I am not sure the different morphs or exactly what is meant by the double het. See if you guys can tell me what the double het is.

    This is the double het.

    This is the regular.

    Thanks!!

    welcome to the forum!

het is short for heterozygous, which basically means the animal is carrying one copy of a gene and it is not visually expressed. double het means that your snake has one copy of two different genes (i.e. Albino and Piebald), both of which aren't visually expressed. you have to take a breeder at their word when it comes to hets, hence why you should always buy from a reputable breeder.
you can read more about genetics here.

as a new keeper with two new animals, are you aware of the Quarantine Process? it is vital for anyone who owns multiple reptiles to practice quarantine with any new animal. if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

    Re: New owner question

They are as quarantined the best I can. One snake is upstairs and the other is downstairs. Everything is separate for them. I read up on this site about bringing in a new one before I picked up the second snake. I make sure they don’t share anything.

If the second is double het it carries the gene for 2 recessive traits, now guessing what type of DH it is would be impossible unless breeding and breeding would be a waste of time and money not knowing what to breed it to, to prove it out.

Yup, what they said. I'd ask the person you purchased from what two genes are het. hope you didn't pay extra for em.

I payed less for him/her than I do for a large bag of dog food. It really wasn’t about what she was or her morph. I held her one time and wasn’t going to put her down. I love her personality, loves to be held!

I am told she was from a clutch from a piebald and a pastel, without seeing the parents I have to take their word for it.

    Thanks

If one was a Pied and the other a Pastel then it is only a single Het Pied.

I guess she will be a mystery then. Doesn’t matter in the long run, I don’t ever plan on breeding any. Regardless of what she is I think she is gorgeous. Thank you guys for the info!
