Post Answer a Few Questions About BP.Net for a College Research Paper

The following post is part of a study that a student is doing for a college research paper. This student is a fellow reptile keeper and has frequented BP.Net as a guest. This post has been approved by the admin, for research purposes. If you would like to help out with this research, please answer the questions accordingly. A few members received these questions in a private message a few weeks ago, but this is the appropriate place to answer the questions if you so choose.

Hello! My name is Kelly Davis, and I am doing an analysis of how people on ball-pythons.net create their online identity by using reading and writing. I am hoping to bring awareness to a community that I have observed from the outside and use it to further a scholarly conversation about learning through literacy in forums. I have a few questions for you to answer if you are willing! I hope to have you as a part of my study!

    1. How do you earn reputation (the green rectangles under your username)/become a senior member?

    2. How do you use reading and writing in your threads?

    3. How have you created a personal identity on ball-pythons.net?

    4. How did you learn the information you know now on ball pythons?

    5. Have you used the forum to learn any new information? If so, detail what thread and how?

There is a site FAQ on how this is done in the system. If you are asking how I did it? By posting useful (or funny) things over the course of time that others felt the need to provide positive feedback. And not being a jerk.

    2. How do you use reading and writing in your threads?

Honestly I don't understand this question.

    3. How have you created a personal identity on ball-pythons.net?

Very similar to the first answer. While I haven't been as active as I used to be, asking a lot of questions, offering sounds advice, being positive, being nice when arguing, and not being a jerk are how I try to represent myself.

    4. How did you learn the information you know now on ball pythons?

Other keepers I have met in person, books, the internet in general, experience over time and this site of course.

    5. Have you used the forum to learn any new information? If so, detail what thread and how?
Absolutely. But I couldn't point to a single thread. There are too many to remember one specifically.

i myself earned the reputation by posting helpful, nice, or otherwise likable comments throughout the site. others (including myself) kind of use the "Thanks" feature as more of a "Like" or "Upvote" as other sites commonly use to show approval or agreement among site members.

i also earned rep by posting GIFs. this is my best post here i'm proud of it lol.

to understand, and impart my message to, others? this is kind of a vague question and i'm not sure how to answer it. ):

i've never considered my contributions to this site as "writing" i guess. just...internet posting? though MANY of my posts are over 200 characters hahaha. i don't use any formal language or spelling. i just want to write clearly enough so people understand what i'm trying to say, as if i was right there talking with them.

just by being myself, and being helpful and encouraging. also posting frequently and openly enough so people get to know you. and occasionally making jokes.

excessive, and at times obsessive, googling, and reading through every thread that had already covered the questions i was looking to answers to. google is what initially brought me to this site, and this site has covered almost every n00bie question there is. even as i progressed into more "advanced" keeping and husbandry, this site has almost every typical question already discussed and/or answered.

there's countless. literally EVERYTHING i know about ball python care i can attribute back to this site.

here's a recent thread i made where i talk about building my own rack and i ask for input on the plans. i got some great feedback from fellow users that helped me tweak the design. i completely forgot to factor in the slots for heat tape to reach each level, as well as changing the gap between the tub and the shelf so as to make them more secure.

    1. By providing helpful information, cute pictures and sometimes by being funny.
    2. Well I tend to read threads. And when I respond, I write. Kind of the bread and butter of text based communication.
    3. I don't know if I really have much of a personal identity on this form. But recently we've had quite a few introduce yourself threads.
    4. A lot of what I've learned has been from this thread, books and even a tiny bit from working at petsmart.
    5. Yeah I can't pick any one thread. There's been tons of helpful threads.

I suggest practical application and testing by taking part yourself and get a personal experience.

I've learned a little bit from this website but I'll have to say that I learned most of what I know on YouTube videos. I watched them 3-4 hours a day during my commute back and forth to work for about 1-2 years. I actually just listened to most of it and sneaked a peak at the phone every once in awhile when they showed something cool. I actually had to increase my plan because I kept using up all my bandwidth on my phone LOL.

As to how you gain a personal identity and reputation, I guess I just like talking on this forum about all the different aspects of breeding and keeping snakes. I didn't even consider trying to make an identity or having a positive reputation in all my time here LOL. I guess I just try to join in and be positive as much as I can to keep others interested and to keep the conversation going. There's nothing worse than a negative conversation that spirals out of control, I usually don't even look at that thread anymore LOL.
