Switching Tank Lids
Hi there, I'm fairly new to this forum. I recently got a secondhand tank from a friend that has a sliding mesh lid, but it's becoming a nightmare for holding humidity in my tank. I've got the sides except for where the lamps are taped up with saran wrap for the meantime but it's still not totally helping. At this point I would really just like to see if anyone has had experience with changing the lid type? I would have to basically break off the sliding lid pieces but if I can do that would I be able to replace the tank lid with one I can get from like petsmart? Just curious since I have no idea what brand the tank is so I can't find any replacement lids for it.

Re: Switching Tank Lids
Keeping proper temps and humidity in glass tanks is awful. I would suggest ditching the glass tank and switching to a very cheap rubbermaid container from Walmart. Much easier to keep things where they need to be.
Just my my 2 cents.

I know the tanks you're talking about. I have one that is currently my quarantine tank.
I went to home depot and bought a sheet of 1/2" foam board insulation. I then cut pieces to cover the back and sides. I also cut one for the top and cut a hole for the heat lamp and some ventilation.
It helps immensely with temps and humidity. I think a 4x8 sheet was $12

I cut a piece of cardboard to the size of the lid, placed my unplugged heat lamp on the cardboard. Traced around the lamp, cut out the hole, then lined the entire cardboard piece in foil and placed it on top of the lid. Keeps humidity better. I have two glass tanks I do this with. Also switch to a coco substrate for added humidity.

Wouldn't a rubbermaid tub still be cheaper and more efficient??

Depends if they want to switch everything over. Lots of things you can do to get a glass tank to work, it just takes time to figure it out.

Perhaps. Some people prefer glass for different reasons.
Glass works just fine if you put in the effort to set it up properly. Been keeping glass for years with no problem
