    "Pancaking" can happen on paper too. You can get ceramic tiles that are rough, not smooth, that are designed for bathroom floors that get wet and you don't want a slippery floor.

    If you want a softer, more forgiving surface that's still easily cleaned you could use textured vinyl flooring instead of tile. Just cut it to fit, glue it down, and seal the edges with a bead of silicone.
