this is from my own learnt knowledge so it all might not be correct:
the only con i have read to not using substrates is snakes "pancaking," or their muscles start to flatten because of the flat surface and they lose their round body shape. this info comes from threads and other articles i've read about topics of substrate. do some research on pancaking for yourself.
