The roommates were kind enough to give her a roof over her head and went from no snake to 1 snake, that's more than generous.
It would not be wise to sneak something in. There was just a recent post of a kid who snuck a snake in to his parents house, in which he lived, and we all know how what his consequences were. The thing is these people are not her parents so the consequences could be more extreme such as being kicked out. Even if they shared a lease and she snuck another snake in the roommates could leave and she would have to pay all the bills and if she couldn't then she could be kicked out by the landlord. In either situation it would not if be wise to go behind someone's back.
Advice for the OP is since you received the snake for free you could find a breeder or a rescue and give it to them and you won't be out any money. If you bought extra supplies for this one they can be either used for the carpet python or as back up. It's always good to have back up!
Other then that this thread has taken a turn for the worse and there isn't much else that can be said.

I would agree with this. Having them own the house is entirely different scenario but also the kid posting is a different scenario because he is a dependent. I apologize for getting off topic with a hypothetical but I still stand by what I said. In this case you should try to pass on the new snake to a fit owner asap so you can get the carpet

I agree. What I was arguing was that people should not be called jerks for considering bringing two snakes into the house for a short time in a different situation (aka the roommate not owning the house).

(This isn't directed at you, Soord, as I understand you're talking about under different circumstances.)
I personally would consider it a jerk move to bring in a second snake against the homeowners wishes, I've personally done that before and it loses you trust and causes arguments and it's just stressful. It's okay to ponder the idea and what-not, but if they go to the homeowners and discuss it and still get turned down they should respect that.

I am sorry. I didn't mean to start an argument here
Would putting the tub inside another tub with a second heat mat on the inside back wall and fewer vent holes insulate it enough to raise the temp? I am a bit hesitant about the che because there is a six year old in the house and a new baby on the way. The tub is put up, obviously, but kids are, well, kids and I don't want to see her get burned or start a fire.
I probably should have remembered that it is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission, but I don't like to make people uncomfortable. Particularly when they know when and where I sleep.
Also, my order from BigCheese came in today while I was at work. THAT was a fun phone call. I have to purchase solid colored Tupperware containers on the way home.

Haha i figured the rats would be an interesting topic with the roomates. What I did was get a foodsaver handheld vacuum sealer and a 13 inch cushioned laptop/tablet case.

As far as your heating goes, its unconventional, but a thermostat regulated UTH on the side of an outside tub and the probe inside the snake's tub to turn it off when it reaches your desired temp -should- work. Honestly if a kid is dumb enough to touch a hot lamp.. more power to them, but you shouldnt need a CHE, just a regular lamp should do. Something to think about, if you have to worry about a 6yr old touching or knocking over a lamp heating your tub, I would be more worried about the kid opening the tub and letting it out.

THE OR IS NOW AN AND!
Due to wails of protest from the six year old when I mentioned possibly re homing the BP when it is healthy and the BPs totally nonthreatening personality, they have agreed st allow both with the understanding that it is a hard limit and I am not to rescue any more reptiles regardless of the situation.
I am SO HAPPY! And am NOT going to mention the fact that the carpet is going to be more active and willing to bite.
I will be modifying a shorter tub for the ball Python and moving the carpet into this enclosure. I can soak the tub in chlorhexidine and move the plants, bowl, and hides but how should I go about sterilizing the branches? They are real wood with metal screws inside them.

Congratulations!!!!!! Lol kids come in handy!! I'm so happy for you and your snakes!!!! That bp is lucky to have an owner like you who cares so much! You could of just gave it away in the condition it's in so you could get the carpet python but you didn't and that says a lot about you!
As far as the branches you can wash them to get any dirt, loose bark, etc and rinse a few times then let air dry for a day then put on cookie sheet bake them in the oven at 250-300 for about half hour, just be careful of those screws bc they will be hot once they come out of oven. Also make sure it's ok with your roommates to bake the wood in the oven. You could also probably just bake it without washing first but make sure you get any loose particles off so they don't drop into the oven and catch fire. Either way keep an eye on it. There's other ways such as diluted bleach but that takes tons of rinsing to make sure all the bleach is out of the wood.

Awesome - Congratulations! BP's make the best snake ambassadors, I think.

Thats awesome, it does make me worry more about the kid though. If she is interested in the BP and your room isnt locked, you may want to consider child proofing either your room or the snakes (or both). Especially with the carpet, last thing you need is a 6yr old sneaking into your room and grabbing the carpet python and getting bit. If I know moms, SOMEHOW it'll be your fault.
