    two snakes in one cage

we are getting a female ball python from a friend pretty soon and from searching around I decided housing her and our Male bp together would be a bad Idea I also am not interested in them breeding, my boy is from a breeder but she was probably purchased at petco so that would be waste of time. but I was wondering since my male is in a huge tank by him self would it be ok if I put a glass in the middle of the tank to house them each on one side? I still havn't figured out how I will do the heating but will they get stressed seeing eachother through the glass ?

I would recommend going the tub route for housing. Move them both in tubs which are inexpensive compared to tanks.

There are easier ways to house the two snakes, but you certainly can do it that way if you wish.

If you put a divider down the center of the tank, you can make it opaque so that they don't have to see each other. Put a wide heating pad under the center where the divider is, so that that part of the tank becomes the "warm end" for each snake. Make sure the heating pad is controlled by a reliable thermostat!

Edit to add a thought: If you do choose to use a divider, be very careful. Make sure it's sealed along ALL edges and is flush with the top of the cage. You'd be shocked at what they'll try to cram their way through (and often succeed) if you leave even the smallest gap.

You really shouldn't house them anywhere near each other for at least a couple months. Proper quarantine of new animals is important to ensure the health of your existing collection.

Just make sure she doesn't have mites, and for about a week try to keep them in a separate room if possible, if not just keep on opposite sides of the room. When I quarantine a snake, depending on where I get it from and if it's CB or WCC I'll do fecal samples to the vet or I treat for mites regardless. I also bleach reptile hides and waterbowls and stuff of that nature when I get it before I even put it in with my snake. I wouldn't use a divider because the snakes may try to get to the other side, and this can cause them to run their heads against it trying to find a way through and you can end up dealing with issues from that. I'd keep them in two different tanks if anything if you do decide to go that route. Tubs are okay but you're limited to what heating elements versus a tank with a screen top, because you can put a lamp with a ceramic heat emitter on top of a screen top without worries of it melting plastic.

As far as an UTH, you can get one from online cheaper than you could say petsmart or petco. Just go to Lowe's/Home Depot and get a dimmer switch which you can plug the UTH in, then you move it up and down to control the temp you want, and always go by the temp from inside the tank, because it's where the snake will be. I'll give you a link to the dimmer switches that I've used for years with no problem.

You need to quarantine any new animals that come into your house. Do NOT put that new python near your already established one.

I suggest quarantining for at least 3 months.

If you do decide after quarantine to add her to the tank, be sure to use a dark divider. Seeing each other will most likely stress the snakes out.

I never said to not quarantine a new animal. Some people quarantine for 3 months, but it's not necessary for 3 months, unless you don't know the exact source of what you're getting. I never said a week either, I said I quarantine for a week unless it's WC or I'm getting from a person that I don't know all too well.

    Edit:
I only said a week because you said you were getting from a friend, and I'm assuming you know this friend and how he takes care of his animals. If I were getting something straight from a pet store, then I would quarantine it for more then a week, but I would not buy something from a pet store. If I were to buy a ball python I would buy from either Tim Bailey or Sean from EBN, both people which I know very well and I know they take care of their animals. Then I would only quarantine a week and I would still treat for mites regardless, even though they don't have mites.

I don't know why you're assuming I'm going after your post?

And if you want to qt for a week, feel free. Most here choose 3 months.

You quoted what I said which is what I said that. Yes I know most here choose 3 months, and most choose to do it in a different room. Not everybody can do a different room though, so if you're going to quarantine in the same room, 3 months versus a month is going to have little difference. I only meant I do for a week because I only get from certain places and I know both people that I would get from. Everybody has different quarantine methods, but since it's his friend, I'm sure he knows how his friend takes care of his animals.
