I think size does have a lot to do with it. Compared to balls, boas get much larger. And they need a larger enclosure too - balls don't mind being cramped which means you can fit more snakes in a given area. But boas like to stretch out and need some interaction/stimulation in their environments so they need a bigger cage relative to their size than balls do.

I think there really are nearly as many morphs in boas as there are in balls, or at least the possibility is there. But boa morphs are still kind of "up and coming" while there are new ball morphs popping out every year. Boas are slower to mature, thus slower to prove out.
