The truth about this situation...
Hey everyone. I don't generally have a lot of time to spend on forums (too many snakes to take care of!), so I had no idea this thread was going on until another user alerted me to it last night. I wasn't able to activate my account so I couldn't respond until now. So here is what happened:
The customer purchased a group of snakes and wanted me to ship them out. There was really bad weather- tornadoes, thunderstorms and extremely high winds coming through the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic part of the US. Fed Ex's sorting facility is in Memphis, TN, right in the middle of where the storms were coming. Also, I am shipping out of WI where I have to deal with bad Winter shipping conditions all the time. I've learned to know when to ship and when not to over the past 15 years. I shipped 32 boxes the day before and didn't lose anything. In fact, my survival rate over the past decade has been about 99.9%, because I am very careful of when I ship. I did not think it was a good idea to ship on the day the customer wanted me to send his order out. I told him repeatedly that it wouldn't be safe and he insisted that I shipped. I told him I wouldn't guarantee live delivery if he insisted that I shipped and he said to go ahead and everything would be fine. That was the only shipment I sent out that day. I had 8 or 9 others I was supposed to ship, but I told the customers it wasn't a good idea and they all were ok with waiting. I packed his box with 2 30hr heat packs and 1 40 hour pack, just like I do all of my shipments at this time of year. The shipment would have been fine if it would have been delivered on schedule. It was guaranteed by 10:30AM and wasn't delivered until 1:58PM so there absolutely was a delay. Temps may have been around 60 locally where it was delivered, but it was in the 20s and 30s during most of the transit time. It is hard to say where the box was sitting during the delay. It may have been outside waiting for a plane to arrive. I have no way of knowing, but it must have been stranded in cold weather for an extended period of time. The bottom line is I told him it wasn't safe to ship and he insisted. I told him if I shipped, I wouldn't guarantee live delivery and he still wanted me to ship. When he received the box and found the dead mystic, he emailed me to let me know, but never once asked me to replace it or even asked for action of any kind. I told him to let the snake warm up gradually and it may come around. He emailed me several hours later to tell me it didn't work. That was pretty much the end of it until this week when he said he wanted more snakes. I gave him a price quote that included a discount large enough to completely cover the mystic and I also offered him another male mystic for less than half price. I feel like that is pretty generous considering the situation. His partner placed the order and I will ship when I feel it is safe. I do have emails to back up everything I've said. I don't know what else I could have done, other than simply refused to ship and have the customer get really mad at me, possibly canceling the order altogether. This should be a lesson to everyone to have patience, and if a breeder thinks they should wait to ship, understand he/she is doing that so situations like this are avoided. I feel horrible that the snake died in shipment. I try my best to make sure it doesn't happen and I've been very fortunate over the years to have an extremely high survival rate. I hope this clears everything up.
