While it is listed as cruel and painful for all animals, the typical CO2 and cervical dislocation may not be effective on pinks. Rats under 2 weeks of age have a high resistance to hypoxia so they are highly resistant to CO2. And their tail/bones aren't developed enough to pop their necks.

Feeder breeders do however, 'flick' their heads to kill pinks as humane form of euthanasia.

I do agree with you 100% that freezing is painful. But in a case of pinks, it is more humane to freeze them straight out then put them through a gas chamber and have them survive. All rats older than 2 weeks old can be humanely euthanized in the typical fashion of CO2 or cervical dislocation.

Feeders cannot be decapitated of course, but the general method is there....

    That's cool. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to find that link for weeks. A few years ago I attempted to freeze some baby gerbils by just putting them straight in the freezer without euthanizing them first and it took almost two days for them to die. Ever since then I've gassed them first.

Also, maybe others don't have the same problem or care about this as much as I do, but I don't like having a bunch of bloody rodents in my freezer. That's why I don't flick them. I just use gas. Every time I've tried flicking them I get crazy nose-bleeds.

Nikki would be probably be able to correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure its harder to gas rats the younger they are. Im pretty sure babies bodies dont need to metabolize as much oxygen so they can last alot longer. I would also think their breathing rates are slower too.

I would just flick their skulls. Their skulls are like paper thin at that age.

You're generally correct actually. They also don't need much oxygen because they have to be able to survive sitting under mom most of the time anyway.
Can't imagine getting dog piled under a big fat mama gives you the best air circulation.

Also for some reason if your doing a large group all at once sometimes 1 or 2 last longer, not sure why it is but I have seen it a time or two is the dry ice method. Usually the ones buried under the rest.
