    Each goblet made by the apprentice who is stealing is one ounce off and there are ten apprentices. So if you pick one goblet from the first, two from the second, etc... until you get to number ten where you select all ten of his. Then place the 55 selected goblets on the scale at one time. You know how much they all should weigh. By picking a different number from each apprentice the amount of gold that is missing will determine who is the thief. If one ounce it is number one, two ounces for number two etc... Hope this helps
