I'd say they're mites. My BP did the same thing about a month ago. Just started sleeping in his water bowl and it drove me crazy cuz i didn't see signs of mites an he just came out of shed a week or two befor that. Come to figure out couple days after he started sleeping in his water bowl the mites showed up... and they showed up everywhere.

So my best bet is that its mites. Luckly your useing papertowel bedding already so its easy to track them.

Time to bleach the tank and get some PAM if you can. Good luck man. Hope it all works out.

Yeah, I got some permethrin-based insecticide that I put on a paper tower, and rubbed it gently against the snake's body. I'll do that again in a week.

Also, I removed the water bowl for now so that he does not contaminate the water by soaking in it.

Thank you all for your help, let's see how this goes!

Let us know how it goes! Don't forget to treat the tank as well an not just the snake!

Provent-A-Mite. (Don't use insecticide directly on the snake. Most insecticides are designed to kill ectothermic animals, and they are toxic to reptiles. Provent-A-Mite is used only on the enclosure, never on the snake).

I can't tell from the photo whether they are mites or phorid flies. (Do they have wings?)
There's really nothing there to indicate scale, so it's hard to tell how large they are.

I can't get PAM since I live in Europe. I know the photo is pretty bad (hard to take a good picture of such small things!), but the biggest ones are about 1 millimeter in diameter.

However, PAM also looks like to be permethrin-based, so I used essentially the same product (just with a different name).

Can you get Reptile Relief? It can be used on the snake and the enclosure.

    Here is a question,

Is it good to treat for mites once every few months as a precaution ??

Seems to me the one's who get them has an infestation that would be easier to handle if you pre treat

Yes, it would prevent infestations, but the mite products that actually work are strong pesticides and are incredibly risky to use, so I wouldn't recommend using mite treatment unless you have reason to believe that a snake actually has mites.
