I am confused. You found the snake outside of your girfriend's house, or the tank? If it was the snake, then I definitely would get it checked out for parasites. If it was the tank, then I would be sure to sterilize it properly before using it.
I would make life simple, and buy a sterilite tub, some flexwatt and a thermostat, and call it a day!
BTW -- did the snake you found roaming around outside have any id tags on so you could call the owner?
