    Mistake gone good?

Well I have been cooling my breeders for about 2 weeks now (2 weeks til pairing! w00t!) and I recently learned how to pop BP's (thanks Frankie!). I was going through the collection after I got good and comfy on my normal male and started popping the rest to double check on sexes. I am going through popping, while getting spermed on and peed on, and figuring out everything is righ. When I go to my breeders for next season and pop my "male" pastel. This guy was my first snake and was a problem feeder but finally got him going (09 @ 850 grams).
WELL.......i pop him and come to find out he is a she. I popped the snake now numerous time over the past week to double make sure. Now I will have 5 girls going next year for sure if not more!
I'm excited, I normally get the story "my female turned out to be a male, so now Im pissed" but I never thought I would get lucky and have a female sold to me as a male.
BUT I could be wrong. I am quite new at this, I can get all my other snakes popped and know all their sexes sooooo I really don't think I am wrong but there is always a possibility.
I'll get pics up this weekend. But I was curious to see if this has happened to anyone before??

    Re: Mistake gone good?

the same thing happended to me. a year of so ago I bought an 08 "male" mojave. well last season I tried pairing "him" up with several females and was not interrested whatsoever. I tried popping and no hemipenes or sperm plugs came out but when I probed it seemed to probe male. so a month or so ago a friend of mine came over and confirmed what I suspected. female!...she's been a sporatic eater is in the 800 g range but should be ready for next year. and to think I almost traded her for a few normal breeder females..

If you are not getting any plugs and can see the little whiteish knobs (scent glands) you probably have a girl. Keep doing it to confirm...push hard, you wont hurt her/him. Bigger males can hold peins in to a point...I never meet a BP I couldn't pop, when I could pop BP's!!

Probe to be sure. I've popped thousands and thousands of snakes and had males hold in their hemipenes and them not have any sperm plugs.

If it is a girl though, that's a wonderful mistake!

It would be a great mistake! I just wish I knew how to probe........
And Crissy your girl is doing great! Up to 1800 grams now, but she just went off feed.

Yea been doing it for 3 days now. Ill get a pic up tonight. But now I kinda wish the hemipenes won't pop out so I do have a female. I might bring him/her up to the show in October if I can't get it by then.

With mine, I usually look for color as well. If you can't get the male's penes to come out through popping, you can mistake what is visible as female scent glands. With males, the visible portion during popping is usually some shade of red or purple while the females are pink or white.

Yea I wouldn't rely on popping for a larger snake. Their muscles are much stronger making it more difficult. Probes are more reliable for larger snakes.
