can't keep it even if I wanted to, seems to be illegal in my state as it's a native non-poisoness species. Thanks again guys; I'm pretty sure it was after the bird nest in the back porch. (newly hatched), I'll find some time this weekend and take it out in some of the local woods and release it back.


Is it mean that he's currently locked away no more than 3 feet from said nest. The tank he's in was used for some lizards and such and thus there is a pretty good screened lid on it, but we weighted it down (with air holes of course) as it was trying to get out already.

If you're keeping that long make sure to provide a water dish, and you could even throw in some newspaper (crumpled up if you like) to provide more shelter than the big pot. I hope weighing the lid down is enough to keep him in, though. Snakes are pretty good at escaping. I wouldn't really worry about him being close to the birds. Unless he actually starts damaging his face against the screen and glass trying to get out, don't worry about.

If you wanted to keep it you might check with the state game and wildlife laws? In the state I am from you are allowed to keep 5 native species of reptiles, could be snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards just whatever, as long as they arent venemous or on the endangered species list!!!

In Georgia, you can NOT keep any native species (rodent, reptile, etc.) unless it is classified as a pest (some still being excluded). Absolutely no native species of snake can be caught or sold in Georgia. Hognose is about the closest native speciese you could have. I'm sure you could argue an eastern hognose is a morph of a western hognose.
