Dale, I will have to disagree with you.
As for the question, I don't celebrate the day (unless there's some party of course, but then I won't be partying because of the significance of the date) because it is not the Independence Day of my country. It's that simple. I don't really feel any sense of accomplishment or pride to be in the country if it's their Independence Day.

Actually Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independance day and most Mexicans don't care about that day.
It's actually more popular in the U.S. then in Mexico..
And my parents don't really celebrate July 4th.
I still pop fireworks and stuff, but it's not a big day.

I think this is relative, For Our family which we are originaly from Venezuela (South America) We celebrate 4th of July. The independce was achieved through similar ways like the USA. Venezuelan Independence day is the 5th of july, most countries around Venezuela have very close related independence days, since their Armies help each other out.

This is very wrong and I'll tell you why.... Cinco de Mayo (May 5) IS NOT THE MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY!!! Mexican Independence Day is September 16!
May 5 is just a day people in the USA (Americans and Immigrants as well) have marketed to party and mostly drink... The only thing Mexico and Cinco de Mayo have related is this: "The Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862" This has nothing to do with Mexico's Independence... I do have an accent however it is not your typical heavy French accent, it more of a mix of several ones (been travelling a bit)
People notice my accent but cannot always figure out where I am from.
