    Minorities...

I know this sounds weird but it is for an AP English assignment. For anybody who is a minority/immigrant to America, do you celebrate the 4th of July just like any person who was born/raised/is part of the majority? My instincts tell me yes, but I want proof for an essay I am writing relating to this topic.

    Thanks,
    Conner

    Re: Minorities...

I'm not an immigrant or minority, but I have friends that moved here from South Africa. They don't celebrate it unless with us or other American friends. I think to them it's just another day, but they still appreciate it. Same thing with Thanksgiving too.

I moved here from England years ago, and I remember we did celebrate the 4th of july the first year we were here because somebody had invited us to their party. We celebrate every year. :-)

    Re: Minorities...

I don't know what kind of scope this paper covers, but as a white american, born and bred, who can trace ancestry back to not only the Revolutionary War but even the original group of the Jamestown Colony:

I have spent time in other countries, and during their cutural-specific holidays I participated in them. I wouldn't say that I "celebrated" per se, it was more experiencing the culture than a meaningful celebration of what the holiday stood for. That, and it's just plain fun.

    Re: Minorities...

I would hope that anyone who becomes a citizen of this great country would celebrate the 4th of July. I would hope they realize this is the most important holiday in our country's history. I know they are taught the importance of the 4th in our country's history in their citizen classes, so sure why wouldn't they celebrate the holiday?

    Re: Minorities...

Minority and origination are two totally different groups of people.

You can have a minority who isn't an immigrant, and an immigrant who is not a minority.

An immigrant from Africa who is black would be considered an immigrant and a minority. An immigrant from France who is white would be considered an immigrant but not a minority. And the reverse is true. A white immigrant from Africa would be considered an immigrant but not a minority. A black immigrant from France would be considered an immigrant and a minority. A black person born in America is not considered an immigrant, only a minority. A white person born in America is neither an immigrant or a minority.

Immigration is related to a persons original birth place, and minority is related to a persons ethnicity.

Should minorities and immigrants alike celebrate the 4th of July? Absolutely. If you live in the United States of America, July 4th 1776 is a date that should be celebrated by you. If it wasn't for that day, America would not be possible.

I would say America has come quite a long way with both immigration and minority issues. And all that is possible because of America being a free country.

    Re: Minorities...

I am a U.S. citizen and celebrate July 4th which is the U.S. Independence Day. I know people who are immigrants from Mexico, they do not celebrate July 4th. They celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which is the Mexican Independence day. I think it is kinda crappy actually, It's obvious they have no real use for the U.S. besides our jobs.

Disclaimer: I am not talking about all Mexican immigrants, There are some that call America thier country and celebrate American holidays also.

    Re: Minorities...

thank you for all your replys it was exactly was i was looking for...
and rockytop, I put immigrant/minority to be inclusive, also it really bugs me when people say that all people of european decent or "white" are all the same. Say that all people from asia are the same and they will throw a fit, most of the time they say they look different. If you compare pure bred people from different european countries you CAN tell the difference, though they might not be as pronounced.
