Do not have any links, but there has been a fair bit of research on how *proper* eating has become yet another privilege of the elite.

Imagine that, rich kids are fed better than less-rich. Go figure.

Being a person of size does not automatically mean you are less healthy.

I am surrounded by rail thin neurotics who I think could be felled by a sneeze. some of my more solid friends are robust, healthy and active.

    There is a continuum.

Good for me that jellybeans count as both a helping of fruit and a helping of vegetables... after all they are BEANS, and they are fruity flavored!!
Crock pots help me cook at home. But I have days where I grab a piece of candy for breakfast, eat a sandwich from near work at 2-4pm.. then end up eating key lime cheesecake filling and jellybeans for dinner. Not healthy.

What most people do is take an all or nothing approach to eating healthy and keeping their weight in check. It should not be that way.

Eat a variety of foods and eat often so you don't over eat because you're starving. Never skip a meal. Cook a few meals and refrigerate or freeze when you have time, like weekends. Then warm up on a busy night.

Always have a snack around that's convenient and somewhat healthy. Don't over shop on items that spoil - buy what you can eat within a reasonable time frame. There's always a supermarket near the fast food joint so instead of a quick burger and fries, pop in to the deli for some chicken and pick up an apple or banana.

Cut down on caffeine and sugar drinks. Drink lots of water.

Never give up because of a one time setback. Next meal go right back to your normal routine. It sounds difficult but it's not with just a little planning.

i agree with what you said, as its the best way. but its hard for me to do some of those things. the main reason im fat is because i eat once or twice a day and usually im only able to eat within an hour before i go to bed. which is where i fail. on weekends i can eat breakfast lunch and dinner i usually have 2 of the 3 and sometimes if im out on the road i stop by mcdonalds. but when im there i get a chicken sandwich and a fruit salad ( i know chicken sandwiches are nt that healthey either but are better then burgers ) and for some reason i cannot eat veggies i can eat corn and potatoes and raw green peppers and thats it i have tried every other veggie i can think of and they make me gag. i wish there was an all fruit diet

Have you thought about making a smoothie or something for on the go? Plus you can throw in some vegetables mixed with some fruit, non-fat yogurt, and a little juice and it comes out tasting pretty good, plus you get a few servings of fruits/vegetables.

I'm with you. The only veggies I can stomach are broccoli stems, raw carrots, and romaine lettuce (covered in cheese/bacon bits/ranch dressing - so not that heavy). Everything else literally makes me gag. But in the last few months I've been making smoothies with veggies thrown in and its been working out pretty good.

Excellent advice!! Especially about caffeine/soda/sugary drinks. I used to be addicted to Mountain Dew and orange Sunkist. I'd drink at least 6 cans a day of the stuff.

What I did was I gradually cut back over the course of a couple of months. I tried just cutting back all at once, but I'd last for a day or two then I'd be back to guzzling sodas. I set a goal to only drink 4 a day, and did that for a couple of weeks, then three a day, now I rarely drink the stuff, usually only as a treat for myself. And I've gotten so used to juice and water, that I can't even finish a whole can anymore as I find it too sweet.

Along with your advice I think that the key is to start eating healthier gradually. Set reasonable goals that are within limits - start with cooking a healthy meal twice a week. Before too long, eating McDonald's and related will actually make you feel pretty crappy as your body is just so used to healthier food. It's a great feeling when you get to the point where you'd rather have a grilled chicken salad than a burger.

    Re: Too fat to work...

My two cents....I'm obese and I have held a job for over 28 years. I'm a municipal truck driver and weigh 330 lbs at age 47. I had a boss who didn't like me and moved me to a job on the back of a rubbish truck back in 04. I had a minor back injury after two months. I tried to return to work after a week and they played games for 6 months, then fired me for not being able to do my job. I fought it for about 14 months, then they settled providing that I could pass certain tests. I passed everyone and have been back since july 06. I've lost 120 lbs at one time, but unfortunately gained it back. I drive anything from 10 wheel trucks to little sidewalk tractors. Anything I can fit in, I can drive
