If the OP were to protect herself and her family in her domicile with an object that is legal for her to own, she most likely won't be charged either.
I would almost expect her to have a duty to retreat even within her house and to only be legally able to respond to the attacker with equal force IE: fists with fists. I'm referring to anywhere that you have to go "before the Crown".
