Most of you know the story of how Cosmo became a part of the family so I won't bore you with the story again. For those who want to read it, it's on my page somewhere (sorry, don't know how to add links).
Anyway, hognose were somewhere on my "maybe someday list", but were many snakes down the list with quite a few species above them. But man am I glad the whole Cosmo thing happened!! He is such a cool little snake, and nothing like any other species I've ever kept, handled, been around, etc...
He's so tiny, inquisitive and confident. His personality is really what sets him apart from any other snakes I've kept though. He is fearless, as if he thinks he's a Rottweiler in a little 60 gram body. On the other side of that though, he's as gentle and personable as can be. He handles extremely well, but usually starts to get antsy around 20-25 minutes into a handling session. I can see his demeanor starting to change and he gets a little more active, seeking out a place to burrow or hide, so in his enclosure he goes.
I guess what I'm getting at is this: I'm glad Cosmo came to me when he did. It's almost like we found each other. Had that not happened I am pretty positive I wouldn't have a hognose yet. And I'd be missing out...
I honestly believe they are one of the coolest species out there. They are also easy to keep, don't take up much room, are inexpensive to feed and make awesome pets for anybody from a lifetime snake keeper to a newbie. Even if you're more into the bigger snakes, these guys would make a fascinating little addition. Enough rambling for me, I think you all get the point that I am a hognose fan and advocate for the awesome little snakes!!
