2nd Pre Lay Shed
My female Pastel had what I tought was her Prelay shed in Feb 25, today I was inspecting her and found her in blue. She hasn't eaten since Jan 26 and copulated with a male Pastel like 13 times since Nov. last year.
Any ideas, or experinces in second prelay sheds.
Thanks in advance,
JC

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
I have alot of experience in this matter..Just ask Robin or Deb..
They only have one POS.. If she is shedding again then she didn't ovulate plain and simple.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
So this mean that she is not going to lay any eggs?? :( :( :( :O :rage:

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
It could mean that she ovulated in between the last shed and this one, or that she will ovulate some time after this shed.
If I remember correctly, Freakie Frog's female that he is referring to did finally lay a nice clutch of eggs.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
LOL she shed four times before she finally OVY! and did go on to lay 11 eggs but keep an eye on her catching the OVY is key to planning you incubation.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
I have the incubator ready since the last time the pair didn't show any interest in pairing that was the first weeks of Feb. Sooooo I'm still waiting !! :taz:

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
It means you keep breeding if you want to till she ovulates or untill you decied to wait untill next year

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
I know of someone that one of their females had their prelay shed, then shed again two weeks later, then laid a clutch of eggs two weeks after that shed. So the the clutch was laid 30 days (within a day or so) of the prelay shed, but also had a shed in between. Not sure whats up with that, but it did happen, I happened to be there when she went into the second shed.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
I've got a female that was expected to lay a couple of weeks ago. I set up the incubator and everything, just like you did. No eggs from her yet. I'm going to wait until fall to pair her up again. There is still a chance that both of our snakes can lay eggs this year. Best of luck to you! Jason

If they are still locking up, then she has not ovulated. A female will not lock up with a male after ovulation has occurred.

It could have simply been a stress shed.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
Once you see the ovulation, they usually when lock up anymore. Then from the ovy date 14-17 days later you'll have the pre lay shed. Then from there anywhere from 25-30 days in general.Key date is ovulation....

Agree with Robin. I would add that there is a localized mid-body swell that is not an ovulation -- but rather extreme follicle development. I don't catch all of them with "follicle swelling" -- maybe all girls don't get it.
It seems to occur 2-4 weeks before actual ovulation. This swelling fooled me 3-4 times last season (my first). I kept waiting for the POV shed, only to realize upon seeing the real ovulation some weeks later, that she had not yet ovulated. Could be that this is your situation.

Re: 2nd Pre Lay Shed
I have had females lock for a year and a half before Ovulating so just because they lock doesnt mean she is cycling or will become gravid. Just keep pairing until you see that Ovy or eggs.
I have snakes that lay in Janurary and snakes lay in October (and every month inbetween) all kept in the exact same conditions. They will go when they want to, sometimes the locking and male interaction will start the breeding cycle so just keep going until you get eggs. I have 5 clutches laid already in 2009 with one hatched. I dont follow a specific routine, I pair year round depending on what my females are telling me and they go when they go.
Best of luck JC:snake:

Yea, my female burgundy sjed on april 8th 09 now she is in shed again may 8 09 and she has 9 big follicles in her im wondering is that normal for them to shed so quickly and im sure she didnt ovy yet because it should take 4 to 6 weeks from the pre ovy shed til she ovy's right and i have been checking eveyday. and fro the first shed i seen her glow.

Matt, If they are building rapidly they will shed more often because of their girth increasing -- similar to a really big meal throwing a snake into a shed.
I don't pay any attention to dates of pre-ovulation sheds -- only post. Maybe others do ?? I have not found it helpful in my breeding and would be just one MORE thing to keep track of.:)
