WARNING: Not for the faint of heart...
    So...

This last clutch was doomed from the beginning...

I had an idea, but I had no idea it would be this bad..

Two good eggs, or so I thought.

Here is what came out of one egg...

This breaks my heart to share with you, but I feel it is necessary for people to learn as well as I have that no matter what you do, things can go HORRIBLY WRONG.

I am devastated, and although this came out of one egg, the other harbored a reminder of how precious life can be..

Those colorations are so pretty, especially on the dead one. Is a very sad thing that it didn't develop correctly. D:

I hope that poor thing wasn't alive? :tears:

I'm horribly sorry for your loss and hope that you will have better luck in the future. You deserve it!

For those who wanted to know...

When I cut the eggs, it was alive..

When I came home today and pulled it out of the egg, it was dead.

That's terrible, Heather. I hate to see things like that; I can't imagine how rough it must have been on you. I'm sure it was for the best, though - part of a larger plan.

I'll bet things will turn around. ;)

Hi Heather, that is a real bummer. I'm really sorry to hear that.

You mentioned that the clutch was doomed from the beginning? Did something happen along the incubation/laying process that made you think something was up??

I believe that the substrate was too wet.

The eggs were HUGE and they seemed to have sucked up even more water...

Two went bad in the middle, and one went bad at the end... and the last one is a runt.

    Yeah...

Well Heather I wish you the best of luck with your runt... I think you produced some great black pastels... didn't you have some for sale last year as well? If you did and I'm thinking correctly... the babies you produce are awesome to say the least.

Oh Heather, how very sad. I do thank you though for sharing this with our membership. It's awfully easy this time of year to get overly excited about all the egg hatching and new hatchling pictures and forget that there is sometimes a harsh side to breeding snakes. Things don't always go as planned and even when we do our best, nature sometimes has another plan. I think your sharing these pictures is a good thing for those that want to breed these snakes to see.

Re: WARNING: Not for the faint of heart...
Thanks for sharing that with us Heather. I had an Albino that hatched just like that 2 years ago. I say hatched, but it only got half way out of the egg before it expired. It is heartbreaking to say the least, but definitely something that breeders need to be prepared to see.

p.s. I am not sure that this is related to wet substrate, as in my Albino clutch, there was 8 eggs. 1 went bad, the Albino was deformed, and the remaining 6 eggs hatched out fine with no problems. I would think if the wet substrate was the issue, the survivor would have had problems too. Did you try adding some dry substrate to the box during incubation to absorb some of the excess water?

The survivor was a runt... The eggs themselves were... very odd to say the least, so I'm really not sure. But they did absorb a lot of water, as I was using a different type of vermiculite..

Could have been a lot of things, but all I know is it was hard as hell seeing that baby.

    Thanks everyone for your support..

I'm oh so very sorry! How heartbreaking for it to happen to any animal! But, the survivor is absolutely beautiful!

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Maybe this happened now, with this cluctch, as a stepping stone or a learning experience so it doesn't happen with the next one. Who knows, maybe the next clutch will bring some really out of this world babies!

    Yeah...

I think my substrate is too wet as well. My eggs are very very big. What should I do? I mean will it be ok if I change the new substrate right now? I'm using vermiculite, but I didn't think it's too wet at that time. If I can go back and do it again, I would use perlite/water and leave all eggs on the tray(don't know the exact word) on perlite/water. Should I change right now, or it's not a good idea?

Sorry for that Black pastel btw. Hope it's just one in a life time for you.
