Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I read many articles on gas prices, every day.
Some say it could reach $7 a gallon here in the U.S. in 4 years. I say yeah, 4 years? Try by Labor day!! Seriously
This has gotten so out of control.
I know living in North Idaho we are kind of, and I stress kind of, cushioned from some of the really high prices. Like in California:O So to everyone in Cali, I feel so sorry for you guys.
We also pay a medium gas tax here.
However, with a Ford 250 diesel, we are now paying more for gas every month than the truck payment.
We are downsizing, but have to have a truck. We drive as little as possible.
What I find sad, is that people keep wondering when prices will go back to what they were. That isn't going to happen, they may stabilize but they will never be what they once were.
What is everyone here doing to save money on gas??
-
Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
i sold my beloved toyota 4x4 and bought a corolla... my insurance is half as much and i get 40mpg. BUT, i really miss my truck. no we got rid of my wife's SUV and we carpool with the one car. now the money we pay of insurance is 30% of what it once was and gas is about 40% of what it was.
i'm not the paranoid type but this whole gas thing is definitely a world-wide elitist conspriacy.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Yeah we only have one car too. It makes it easier.
We are going to get a smaller truck. Has to be able to pull the work trailer though.
We just will combine trips for errands, and shop much closer to home.
As for the motorcycle, great idea but with two kids car seats just don't fit on them lol
Plus we have like maybe 3 whole months out of the year hear where it isn't freezing cold, raining or snowing. In fact it snowed two days ago:rage:

I predict that you will see a lot of Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas and other cars of that type in the near future.

I'm gonna trade my neon in for a prius... other then that.... bend over and grab your ankles :gj:

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Any way you look at it most of the world is paying more for gas than we are here in the US. Think of it this way, right now you would pay more for a gallon of bottled water than you would for gas if you buy the normal sized water bottles. I mean seriously, paying more for something that falls out of the sky than gas? I think what people need to realize is that driving isn't a right, it is a priviledge. If you can drive then good for you, but if you can't then I'm sorry. I know it sucks but I don't feel that it is somebody elses job to make sure you get to drive.
-
Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Well it could be worse right now in France my parents pay
1.4 Euro for 1 liter which is equal to $8.19 per gallon :O

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Gas is hitting me pretty hard seeing as how I do a LOT of driving for my job. I had to raise my prices by $2.00 two months ago, and now I am considering either adding a fuel surcharge or shrinking my service area. I average about 700 miles per week as of right now. If I could get away with a motorcycle or a scooter I would but it is not feasible. So... time to trade in my mini van that only gets about 20 mpg and get a small/cheap car.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I am just glad that I live close to my work. I could get a similar job that pays double what I get now, outside of Buffalo. Trouble? It takes 4 times longer to get to, one way, than my job in town. I conserve, and only do shopping when I am already in-town for work. I have a Jeep Wrangler, and it is so-so on gas; not as bad as some friends' with larger trucks, but it's no Prius. I would Love to get a car for gas mileage alone; I hate cars and only really feel secure in a high-up vehicle like the Jeep. My husband has a newer pickup; Nissan Frontier. It is not that bad on gas, but he drives over 2 hours both ways to work daily. He could get by with a car also, but.. winter here is Murder. Our driveway absolutely Requires a 4x4 vehicle to enter/exit. I thought of getting cars for the summer, but to buy more vehics.. to maintain them and the like.. impossible. Can't afford more car payments, or the fixing of a pea-shooter car, so we get by. My honey might get a motorcycle to save on gas though.. though I am paranoid about him driving that long way on one.. and it would be another flippin' debt to pay and maybe thus not worth it!

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
One thing we can all do is contact our senators and representatives and tell them to stop subsidizing ethanol!!! Tell them we don't want federal regulations about what we have to use for a fuel source (or at least to pick a good one to shove down our throats).
It's debatable whether you even get the same energy out of corn ethanol that you put into making it... even if we break even, what's the point? It has artificially driven up the price of corn (we're affected in a big way here in Missouri), and also drives up the cost of gasoline.
If you've seen the news stories about food riots, you can thank our wise leaders for the same reason... there is a ton of money to be made by switching fields over from wheat or other food crops to grow lower grade corn. They get a huge tax break, a subsidy, and a few other little perks.
Also, tell the congressmen that it's time to use our natural resources! There is a section of Alaska that was specifically set up as a drilling site, but they refuse to allow it. There might be a one-eyed spotted field mouse out there somewhere.
We can also use the oil shale out west- in the 70s it just wasn't practical to refine it (costs about $40 per barrel to get out), but heck, even if it were to cost $60 per barrel it would be worth it now!
Becoming energy-independent is vital for this country. There are a lot of bad people that we stay beholden to because we don't dare cut off our supply. I'm all for developing new technologies as long as we don't regulate the crap out of the old ones- especially if it's for Al-Gore-scam reasons.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Well, there are plenty of alternatives to cars out there. Scooters or Motorcycles use a lot less gas, then there's good ole' public trans. And, the old standby of walking. :) That's what we do since I can't drive and my BF doesn't want to learn.
And, never forget the old fashioned car pool! :D
I'm weird, I know... but I think that cars aren't worth all the expense and trouble for a little bit of convenience that is shrinking daily! What with rising gas and insurance prices, traffic problems, and other terrible things connected with motor vehicles, not to mention the high price of even obtaining and keeping a vehicle, it's just not worth it.

It's debatable about whether it is worth it or not. It all comes down to personal finance and the value that you put on convenience. If the value you put on it is less than it costs then you shouldn't drive. If it is more then you should drive. It's all just up to what people think it is worth to them.
There are many people here who will drop several grand on a snake. My first car was 800 dollars. Add in insurance and gas and those two could come out equal.

.
Makes me wonder. This dude came down the driveway yesterday practically Begging me to talk to our landlord about renting our fields here to grow corn. See, the farmer that grows here now, does acres of hay. We buy the hay on-site and it suits us well for the horses. Now that I am reading more into the hype about low-grain corn for ethanol.. maybe he was wanting to ride that bandwagon? Don't matter; my landlord ain't interested :)

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Stop buying stuff that says "Made in China" (which is, unfortunately, almost everything, I'll admit). Cars, and cars in the US, make up a minority of world demand for oil. Industrializing nations, ie India and China are gobbling up oil and driving up prices. The demand for oil is so high there because so many companies are opening up factories...factories which use a lot of oil. So when you go to, Wal-mart for example, and get a great deal on a plasma TV you are paying for it every time you fill up your car.

Everyone should watch this. It's 20 minutes long but you should watch it somewhere quiet and a time when you have that 20 minutes. It's worth it.

I'd totally watch this, but I have to go BUY STUFF!! I have to BUY STUFF RIGHT NOW!!! LOL. :-)
But yeah, it's an interesting video. It definitely gets you thinking, but keep in mind 83.94% of statistics are made up.

BUY A BIKE!!!!!!
and start rideing to work LOLz
Yea but seriously its starting to get like UGHHHH!!!

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I am going to start carpooling to work, which will essentially cut my gas costs in half. And then when my lease is up; I'm moving close enough to school/work that I can bike. Good for the environment; even better for my wallet.
Gas prices suck, but people will learn to adjust. It will be fine in the end.

:gj::gj: Exactly. Another downside of that? All those factories pumping out crap into the atmosphere. But I won't get started on that...

Well gas is $3.59gl and it looks like it will go up again soon :(.So i sit around playing on the computer all day as its cheaper :P

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
For the most part I just don't get why people are complaining so much about gas prices. Most people spend ridiculous amounts of money on stuff they don't need. If they really need to drive then stop spending money on those other things. It's not that hard. I understand that there are exceptions to this but in general most people could just cut back somewhere else if driving is that important to them.
-
Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
People are going to complain about price increases, regardless of how important it is. If milk went up to $10 a gallon, we'd all be rioting outside Publix. (Or Whole Foods in my case.) It's just what people do. They don't rationalize and go, "y'know, if I didn't buy those two bags of cookies, I could still afford milk and the grocery bill wouldn't be any higher than usual. That's swell!" (-lol-) It's a good point, but unfortunately, people aren't going to think that way.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
My fiance and I are going to find out how long it takes to ride our bikes to work. Gas prices are 3.59 here. I have not filled up my car since last summer.
People are going to complain about gas prices. I complain all the time about gas prices. But you know what, I'm doing something about it. I'm driving less. We carpool. Do all of our errands in one go. Going to start biking to work (if its not too long of a bike ride.) We adapt to work around things. Some people just keep buying those big expensive cars that suck gas like a kid with a juicebox. My brother drives a mustang and has to fill up his car every other day to every two days because of the way he drives (street racing, showing off, speeding, ect). I drive like a granny and get by with only $20-$25 in my tank every week.
The way I see it, if people would start riding bikes, walking, jogging, ect to work/school/errands/ect. Then we'd be killing two birds with one stone. Keeping money in your wallet, and getting in shape while you do it.

The price of gas is in everything you buy...from gas at the pump, to groceries, etc...eventually cutting back won't even be an option, assuming you want to eat.

That is true. It is in the price of everything. I think for the average person there will be areas where they can cut back. Obviously there will be people for whom cutting back isn't an option. For those people I agree that something needs to be done. Whether it be help with groceries or help with healthcare. I'm not belittling the problem. It really is an inconvenience for a lot of people.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
They say necessity is the mother of invention, and desperation is the father of innovation. As much as it truly sucks right now to be facing this insane gas crisis, it may be what ultimately marks the turning point in social evolution to find cheap, clean, and renewable/sustainable alternative fuels.
Even as a person who does not drive or own a car, I am affected by the rising costs of virtually everything that needs to be trucked, shipped, or otherwise produced by machinery that runs on gas.
Here is hoping for a greener, much more eco-friendly future. :gj:

I am actually right now working on a design for a new type of windmill that I will be using for my senior design project. I have two more years to get it perfected but I am all for alternative energy sources. If its renewable and cheaper how can anybody argue with it.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??

I really hope you're kidding about drilling in Alaska... What happens when there is no where left to drill? We will run out of oil, eventually. It probably won't be for another 5 or 6 decades realistically. But it's gonna happen. It's a resource that took millions of years to create, and we are gonna drain it all in less than 3 centuries.
Though it's not our oil supply that's lacking. Oil companies are making record profits, so obviously the rising gas prices aren't because it's costing them more to drill, otherwise their profit margin wouldn't be increasing.
And the other major factor in gas price is our rising domestic demand and the fact that we haven't built a new refinery on US soil in over 30 years.
We need to stop wasting money and fuel buying products that are shipped from half way around the world. All these lame made in china gizmos that you buy at wal mart... how much of it do we really NEED?
Oh, and the prius is a real joke. Great marketing though. Toyota made a bundle selling that car to a bunch of band wagon green fools. A 20 year old civic hatchback will get the same mpg, and a diesel will double that.
The human race has never and will never care about our home. And I doubt anyone will really notice until it's too late. You wanna hear something that will really make you think though? It's not oil that we really have to worry about... in the next several decades, wars won't be fought over oil, but drinking water.
Oh and before I finish my rambling, corn is horrible for making ethanol. Sugar cane is far more efficient. Brazil makes ethanol out of sugar cane, and they are completely self-sufficient now. But the corn industry is one of the most powerful farming industries in this country, so they have the most pull.
In fact, if you want to lay blame for crop shortages, blame people that eat too much beef. Cows are the most inefficient food source in terms of how much feed their require compared to how much food the produce. Oh, and they produce methane, a greenhouse gas.
And corn farms aren't even owned by the little guy midwest farmer anymore, many of them are owned my large corporations, and buy their corn seed from large biotech companies, and all have their well paid lobbyists, who make sure our congress is happy.
Who gets screwed? Us. It's all about profits, and stealing the biggest slice of pie. But the pie is running out, and it's our children and grandchildren that are going to go hungry.
It's funny how after clinton got caught lying about adultery, everyone was yelling for impeachment. But when bush and co. blatantly create false intelligence data to start an illegal war that has cost american tax payers $30,000 dollars EACH in debt, no one has seemed to care. Everyone conveniently forgets these things.
The two party political system has created a monopoly on the presidency. Whoever controls the party controls the system. The power of government has been taken out of the hands of the people. Our current election is a farce. The electoral college and superdelegates and party primaries, all of it is a complete joke. Doesn't sound like democracy to me (or even a proper republic, which is actually what our system is supposed to be...)
But with Pakistan and North Korea currently having nuclear capabilities, and Iran probably joining them in the near future, we might not even survive long enough to care. Oh well...

Some great points; especially about corn not being efficient for producing ethanol. It's horrible for it. We're wasting money, energy, and land for producing it.

That's a great idea and all, but people have already stopped spending money on those other things. This decrease in consumer spending is why the dollar continues to devalue, pushing us into a recession, and raising gas, food, and consumer good prices even more.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I pretty much spend money on nothing other than bills, food, and my animals! Of course I count gas for the dog van as a pet related expense... almost the only places I drive are the dog park and the dog beach and the pet food store. I have cut out entirely going visiting to see friends and family unless absolutely necessary because of gas prices.

The problem with being, not only a developed nation, but the most affluent nation on earth, is that you can't simply go back to acting like a third world country and maintain your standard of living. Sure, we can save our pennies, but that very act makes them worth less, and in the long run won't do a thing to solve our economic issues.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
We could have a national "don't buy gas" day?
Or just buy gas as little as possible.
But basically there's nothing really that we can do, unless people start making more and more cars that are more efficient but other than that we're Fu:cens0r:

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I absolutely can't complain about gas prices. They're not as bad here as everywhere else. And this is coming from somebody who drives an 88 Lincoln with a 302 and is technically unemployed. I average 20mpg around town and 24-26 on the highway. My car was a gift three years ago so no car payment, and my insurance is super cheap here in NH. My boyfriend lives on an island in Nova Scotia where he also works, and is paying over $5 a gallon for gas, costing nearly 90 bucks for a fillup. I have a BJ's membership and get a 10-20 cent discount on my gas there. Fillup is less than 50 bucks and I get over two weeks out of it. Right now I don't have a "real" job, but I do side jobs (signs and pinstriping) and I just charge a little extra for travelling. I really, really can't complain...

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
Right now I only make enough money in the month to pay rent, my animals, gas, and food. We are trying to produce our own feeder rodents to bring our snake/ferret feeding bill from $30/week to $10/week.
I think we are going to try and figure out more ways to save on gas and save money in general. And sometimes saving money is better for the enviroment anyway. For instance, we only run the snake racks, the computer, and the fish tank constantly. We are going to start turning the computers off when we are not using them and so that only leaves the snake racks and the fish tank (the fish tank might be sold anyway) that run constantly. Other than that, lights only go on when we need them and they are promptly turned off when leaving the room. This saves us a crap ton on our electric bill.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
i would love to have a hybrid...but at 50K for them there is no way for me to get one. i would save money by buying a 20K car and using what i save per month for other stuff.. we go green as much as we can but the cost of going green is larger than standard materials.
a statement above said to ride a bike to work, as some of us work 1-2 hours away ( driving) this would not work. i wish it could but it doesnt. im actually thinking about buying a motorcycle so i dont burn as much gas during the nice days...

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I would rather pay more money for gas than buy a motorcycle where you have one of the highest risks of dying.
It's not that motorcycle riders are bad drivers, most of them aren't. But it's the Other people that make riding them dangerous. People don't seem to notice people on bikes and that's why all the accidents on bikes happen, the people don't see you. It's always the *Other* people that you should worry about.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
I would love to have a bike, but I am worried about the risk of accidents. People around here are stupid drivers and never seem to care about other drives whether or not they are on a motorcycle. But it would be a good option for both my fiance and I. I have only a 15 min drive to work. My fiance only has a 15 min drive to work (we work across the street from each other). Bikes would be a good option here, but we are not sure we want to go through with having to get the license and actually buying a bike or 2. Not to mention thats another vehical to insure since I could not give up my car. I need it for all the things I carry and I'll need it for when I start a family.

Re: Gas prices??? What are we to do??
There are so many ways to cut back.
We really don't buy anything we don't need anymore.
I have even noticed that a few cricket suppliers shipping costs have gone up by at least $2.
I am going to buy a new colony of feeder roaches for the the dragon, and the Tokay.
They snakes I have covered.
I am looking at selling some animals to kind of balance things out a bit.
