Alternative to neosporin

I was told to buy neo sporin for my ball python. Now ive searched everywhere i live in canada called 4 different places near me no one carries it. Is there a alternative to it thst i can get or any other ointments i can use?

I would not use traditional Nueosporin.

I believe that has a pain killing ingredient as well as the antibiotic ingredient. That's bad for snakes.

You want a petroleum based antibiotic cream/gel that has ONLY antibiotic in it and maybe some vitamin D as the main ingredients, NO PAIN KILLER.

Generic antibiotic ointment might be fine. You also do not need much. I think I bought some, when my BP had managed to rub her head snout a bit and it was irritated, for about $3.

I stand corrected. "Original Neusporin" does not have pain reliever, but many of the neusporins and other antibiotic creams do.

Just double check the ingredients list and what the "description/features" are of the cream.

Petroleum-based ointments can cause scale damage if used long-term and thus they are not ideal for reptiles.

For topical wounds I prefer Vetericyn, which is a water-based gel. It also dries "dry" not goopy like Neo or Triple, so bits of substrate don't stick to it.

Another alternative is silver sulfadiazine (silvadene); not sure if you can get it in Canada without a prescription.

I've never used it so I couldn't say.

The active ingredient / antimicrobial in Vetericyn is hypochlorous acid, which is also in products made for human use. You may be able to find something available locally. Just read the ingredient list to ensure that it's the only active ingredient, and everything else is inert (like water).

Is this stuff okay to use?. No, I wouldn't use that...this is a wound, not a "hot spot". You want something that is antibacterial, not just something to "soothe" & there's no telling if those ingredients
would be an issue with snakes...they aren't common ingredients at all. :rolleyes:

You can't find betadine either? Most any drugstore would carry...it's a solution (blot on with gauze & let dry), it's not an ointment, but probably all you need.

It says for cuts and scraps on it. Okay icwill return it any try to get betadine

Yes, it will SOOTHE the skin & promote healing, but it doesn't say anything about killing germs...that's the difference.

Betadine is just a brand name for povidone iodine. Any drug store will carry it.

The drug store bear me doesent have any so i had to order some will be in tomorrow
