Do you have any snake tattoos yet? I like the simple snake ones. Pinterest is a great place to find tattoo ideas.

If you really like it you should go with the jellyfish :D The price usually depends on the artist. The place I went to usually starts at $50 but since I was there from 3 pm to 3 am ( that was a long day lol) they gave me a discount.

Is there any way you could find out where they want to go? Or do a google search and suggest some places with good reviews? If you can find out about the place by Monday you could probably email someone from the shop and possibly get a quote on the Jellyfish.

For your first tattoo make sure you REALLY know what you want, make sure that is really where you want it (while people are more open about tatts now they still will stare so be ready for that and make sure you can handle that) make sure you find a really GREAT artist, price should be secondary remember this is something you will have for the rest of your life, don't make the mistake to go cheap and regret it within weeks.

I have a great artist and he does a lot of cover up, he often fixes ugly tattoos that have just been done by other local artists, which means those people cheap tatts turn into expensive tatts anyway so keep that in mind.

theres one place they want to go, but their style is super classical and i dont know if theyd be able to do the jelly fish or how theyd do on it, so i might just wait.

i know 100% that i want something on my wrist or my forearm, everyone keeps recommending calf but i dont think thatd look that good on me. initially i wanted a small symbol of sorts on my wrist but ive heard its on of the most painful spots! also i agree, price should be secondary, but im not the one paying, but if im not able to get what i want im not going to get anything, no point in settling and being sad about it

Very true. I got my tattoo on my ankle (it's a small crescent moon) where it can easily be hidden when I wear shoes. This is because I don't know what jobs I'll have in the future and I don't want peoples opinions to get in the way of a future career.

My dog's name is Luna :P I got mine on the outside of my ankle. I really like it because I can wear flipflops when I want it to be seen but its still covered when I wear any type of shoe. It hurt quite a bit but that may just be because I'm a wimp

The Neptune symbol is pretty cool. I am thinking about either a simple snake tattoo or the Cancer zodiac symbol for my next tattoo.

You are very excited about tattoos and I get that, I love them! I went to a place that didn't card and got my first one at 16. That wasn't the brightest thing for me to do and here I am over 20 years later with a tattoo that is muddy and not that great.

Please make sure to research where you go, look at the artist books, make sure you are happy with their style. Find reviews of the artist online if you can! A lot of them have online portfolios at this point. I wish I had spent more time really figuring out what I wanted and finding a better artist, I don't necessarily regret some of my tattoos, as they do mark a moment in my life, but I really wish I had thought about it more and done more research for some of them.

If you're really into the jellyfish and been wanting it a while, I'd do that. The tattoos I get now, I've wanted for years. There are tattoos I wanted in my teens and 20s that I didn't get (too expensive at that time for me) and now, I'm glad I didn't get them because my tastes and ideas have changed.

As for price - the larger, the more expensive. Color is more but you're going black and grey so it doesn't matter. Also larger tattoos and more contrast with more negative space tend to look the best over the long run (from my experience). Most places will be able to quote you based on the size of the piece, generally it's a price per hour and most artist can estimate how long something will take. The more shading, the longer it'll take. A lot of artist will charge different prices in the same shop depending on their ability, seniority and popularity.

Just be totally prepared for this, for life. My first tattoos were on my legs and as a woman, this meant long skirts and/or tall boots. My arm tattoos mean long sleeves were a must when I worked in the corporate world and in customer service. Times are slowly changing and every decade they seem to become less taboo, but it isn't a joke and it is something to think about very seriously. Personally, I'd suggest a first tattoo somewhere more easily hidden, maybe on your back or side or upper shoulder and get the lower forearm one later. You do you, that's just this old lady's $0.02.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

My advice, especially to somebody as young as you are....

Do NOT get a tattoo unless you KNOW you want it for at least a year. If you want that tattoo now, wait a year, if you STILL want it, go for it. Chances are, you'll change your mind within a year.

2nd piece of advice: make sure the artist is TALENTED. Crappy tattoos are some of the worst things to be stuck with...FOREVER.

I'm speaking from experience on both accounts. I have tattoos I got when I was your age that I wish I didn't get. I also have crappy tattoos that I wish I didn't get.

(its annoying) but its extremely hard for me to change things about myself but ive been trying a bit harder to do so. plus, i always worry what everyone else is gonna think even if i love it, insecurity is bad

Goid idea to wait. As for worrying about what others think: don't. You be YOU. And be proud of who YOU are.

I've put this quote on here before, but it fits here too.

"My choice is what I choose to do
and if I'm causing no harm it shouldn't bother you.
Your choice is who you choose to be
and if you're causing no harm then you're alright with me."

i think the biggest thing for me (gonna get deep here in a second) is i have major mental trauma, when i was a kid (5-6) up until i was 14 i got bullied by friends and family for having a girly voice and being small etc and my family is super judgemental and whatever i get im worried theyre gonna think it’s feminine and such. its total bs that i have to worry about that but, thats my life

I feel ya. I have anxiety and depression issues myself. The sooner you realize that when people put you down it's THEIR insecurities showing, the sooner you'll be comfortable in your own skin. I'm not trying to put your friends and family down, but if they're picking on your voice or anything else, that's on them. Your voice is YOURS, your small size is YOURS. Let them worry about themselves. Don't let them throw their rubbish in your back yard.

Hahahaha! Joke's on them, I guess.

I know being a teenager is tough, believe me I get it. And if some random dude was giving me life advice when I was your age I would have laughed it off and ignored it.
But hey, can't hurt to try to help.

Just keep your head up, my man.

I leave you with another lyric, which I feel strongly enough about that I tattooed it about 10 years ago...

"If I can't be my own
    I'd feel better dead"

nahh, not me, the past 4 years of my life my only friends have been double my age, i take everything into consideration, just some things are hard to actually do, no matter how easy they sound. arrogance hinders learning, i learned that at a very young age and its helped me learn a lot of important things for life. i do everything in my power to not discredit anyone because no matter the circumstances more than likely they have at least a little bit of knowledge that you dont

Advice from a mom - it sounds like you've got A LOT going on. You've shared a ton of personal information here with internet strangers, you obviously need to talk. And that's a good thing! Get it out of you.

But the tattoo won't fix anything, or make you any cooler, or gain you any more respect. It's a superficial move that could have a lot of downside. You are SO young and already have so many challenges. If grandma is willing to put up a few bucks to have you inked, maybe ask if she'd spare a few more for a session or two with a therapist.

You can always get a tattoo, no matter what age you are, there is zero downside in waiting (longer than months even) and a ton of potential downside in getting one too soon. You don't even have a job yet - you should prioritize your life decisions (and yes - a tattoo is a life decision).

Work on fixing inside out, instead of outside in.

hahaha, put a smile on my face. thank you for caring! ill try and go over things in order.

oversharing has always been an issue of mine but sometimes is necessary for someone to understand the situation and to be able to give help on a topic (like the job thing) and believe it or not, this is actually the best ive felt mentally in probably 6-7 years. i got myself out of a bad situation and im doing well right now, my only downfall currently is motivation, it’s extremely hard to motivate me and i need said motivation to get my GED, get my drivers license (i also need a teacher but, thats out of my control), and get a job. right now im motivated to get a job so i try and apply to as many places as i can before this motivation runs out

i know the tattoo wont really fix anything, the only thing it has potential of doing is making me more comfortable with myself, but i dont really care too much about that. ive wanted one for a few years now i just never put too much thought into it because i felt like id get screamed at by my family, but now that i know theyre open to it it opens that door again, yanno?

thank you for the mom lecture <3

(also im waiting on getting medicaid to go to therapy, i applied a couple months ago just waiting to get accepted)

Fantastic! I am a huge believer in therapy, just to have a neutral party hear you out and give unbiased guidance, I think it's incredibly beneficial. There is a shift happening in how we approach mental health these days (not fast enough, but still) that I think access to help will get easier and easier.

So hang in there, explore and exhaust your resources, and then when it's finally time for that tattoo you can get something truly special, like "I (heart) hilabeans". Just a thought... ;) xoxo

I was quite a few years older than you are now when I got my first, and so far only, tattoo (Celtic/tribal heart I designed). I knew what I wanted for some time but hadn’t worked out all of the details before I met the artist I wanted to do the tattoo. She took my rough design and refined it in a sketched draft before I committed to the tattoo. Placement on the back of my left shoulder was two-fold. The heart represents my other half so I wanted it close to my heart but not on my breast (gravity is not your friend lol). Second factor was that I was working in a professional field where a visible tattoo would impact growth in my career. Even now when tattoos are mainstream, a highly visible tattoo would potentially impact promotions.

Whether you get the jellyfish now, or wait a couple of months to find just the right artist, be sure your tattoo speaks to you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of your choice...and that is hard sometimes...you just need to be happy when you see it on yourself. I’ve never once regretted the tattoo I have and it still means as much to me today as it did when I got it. You are the only person you have to please. ;)

I think for each person a tattoo has a different appeal. It can be like mine that is representative of a person or event/relationship, or it can just be an image you like. When I say find what speaks to you, it doesn’t have to be deeply motivational. Just find what you like. I have plenty of friends whose tattoos don’t have significant meanings, but just an image that makes them happy to see it each day.

I'm glad you decided to wait! It sounds like it was going to be a spur of the moment decision, more or less, which does not pair well with tattoos, at all. Never get one just because someone offered to pay for one and now you're scrambling to find something you like. It will be there *forever* and should have a little more thought put into it!

Second, you should do a TON of research on where you go. Like, an obnoxious amount. There will usually be examples of each artist's work online. If you find some you like, go into the shops. Most artists will have a book of work that's more expansive than what is available online. Some specialize in different styles, or in color vs greyscale, etc. Look at reviews. Check and see if the artist has won any awards for his art. How long they have been in business, etc.

Third - and this is a big one, at least for me - *never* shop by price. A good artist WILL be expensive, and a good tattoo will cost a lot of money. Most artists will take offense if the first question you ask is "how much do you charge" because that says you're more concerned about price than the quality of the work that will be on your skin for the rest of your life. For my last tattoo, I actually looked at the artist's work at a shop when my mom went in to get work done. Then, at a tatoo convention, I kept hearing his name announced as the winner of the different contest categories for his work. So I finally looked him up, went and spoke with him about what I wanted, and THEN asked his price range. To add, many good artists have a bit of a wait list! Be prepared to have a little time to save. Don't pick a shop because you read they're cheap, because with tattoos you get what you pay for!

Find something or an idea you love that speaks to you. You don't have to find something online that you want - they're artists, their whole life revolves around taking ideas and turning them into work. I went in with a vague idea of what I wanted and my artist turned it into an absolutely insane piece of art that was expensive, took a long time, and I am so beyond blown away with. Think of what means a lot to you, and maybe a style that piques your interest, and see what you and your artist can work out. :) Pick something you can absolutely rock and make it yours!

    Re: tattoo ideas!
I tend to prefer tattoos with meaning, and something unique. So far, all 4 of my tattoos have been custom made (my friend drew one for me and I designed the other 3). I have one on my wrist that means strength and healing. I usually find a meaning that I want and then try to symbolize that. I've heard writing doesn't last very well, and neither do those water color designs. Now, I've been tossing around ideas for more than a year and haven't found anything that I like for long enough. I second what's been said earlier though: make sure it's something you really really want for a while cuz it'll be on you forever. You might also want to pick somewhere on your back in case you don't like the first one, or somewhere meaty so it doesn't hurt as much. Definitely talk to the artist though and find someone you trust. Let us know what you do end up getting though!
