    Hides?

Is it normal for them to chill outside of the hide rather than in? My UTH is under this hide and he wont go inside. He would rather lay ontop under the heatlamp.

The entrance seems a little small. Can he comfortably get inside without struggling?

Is he showing any signs of stress like not eating? What are the temps in your tank?

I got him tuesday. So i havent fed him yet. But the entrance is plenty big. I just have it turned and this is the angle of the pic. My temps are 79-81 on cool side. And 88-92 on hot

On the side is a peice of cardboard that was in the box holding the tank. Was on the corners of the tank. Its too small for him but he likes to lay partly under it sometimes

We need to verify the temp in the hide.

Without a IR temp gun I suggest lowering the temp and see if your snake starts to use the hide.

Is your UTH regulated at all? If the UTH is just plugged into the wall chances are its running too hot for your snake.

I have a zoomed rheostat now. I only have $35. And my heatmat is already attached to my tank. So one with a probe will be useless for me.

ALL tstats have a probe. You can mount the probe to the bottom if your set on not pulling it off a bit. Mount it just the same. I suggest aluminum foil tape. Remember to tape the wire behind the probe. Do not tape the probe bulb itself.

To clarify things. The probe reads temperature and reports it to the tstat which then varies the output of power to uth to give the desired temperature. Without a probe a tstat will not work.

This one says heat mat plugs into it and then this plugs into the wall. Maybe i read it wrong but i didnt see anything about a probe.

You plug the tstat into the wall and plug the uth into the tstat. You then run the probe where needed to monitor the heating devices temperature. You will understand better when you get it.

If it does something is seriously wrong. Many here use foil tape because it works. We know from experience.

Yep. Check out this thread. It shows the uth taped on and probe taped in place.

My little girl would not go in her hide. I took it out and rubbed with my hands raised my shirt and rubbed my belly with it put it back in with her. Within 2 minutes she was going through the front came out the back and went back in and laid down to soak up some heat.(heat pads under the hide) I don't know if this helped , but sure made me wonder. I moved one hide out and one in and she would not go into it until I did this so I don't know...

So i don't mean to sound rude..... But you said "i only have 35$"

You purchased a snake, put its life in your hands, and only have 35$ For the HANDS DOWN most important item when owning reptiles?

What if it fails (like they have been known) now your vet costs min 100$ to help you (IF YOU EVEN HAVE the $$) All of which could be saved by spending the extra few bucks on a Thermostat MEANT for reptiles not plants... Sorry biggest pet peeve is people trying to cheap there way out of a Real thermostat (unless that is a temp fix to nothing while proper is being shipped)

Ive heard this all before. No offence but u have no idea who i am or what i been through. I bought a rheostat. Its not like i dont have ANYTHING. and i was told the one im getting works for reptiles. Im on a budget. Just like a million other people are in this country. I only have 35 till my check next week. And all that goes to bills. Id like to get something a little better for my snake. I DO take care of my pets. Furry or not. Ive researched enough and im keeping the proper temps and humidity. My snake isnt stressed. And if it does fail i have a rheostat till i can get something else. I find it a lil retarted to spend $100 on something thats gonna do the same exact thing as a $35.

I know nothing of snakes or hides and cannot see how you went from, "Snake refuses to go in hide" to "raised my shirt and rubbed my belly with it".
I thought you were going to rub the hide with a rat. Or maybe rub it with substrate to remove any unwanted smells from manufacturing, shipping, etc.

But why would you think that would work?:please::O:confusd:

Did you try the belly-rub for your hide, and did it work in getting your snake into it instead of climbing on top?

Because I acquired a young ball python 4 weeks ago and have a lot to learn. I hope this is a proper forum for new ball python owners to find out about their snakes, and about hides, and about shedding, and about feeding, and about other aspects of good reptile husbandry.:)

I try to be understanding here as we have alot of users that are on a budget. In the big picture we are all on a budget though, you have to be smart with it. I have to agree that getting a new hobby when you really can't afford it is not a great idea for you or the snake. It really doesn't matter if we really know you or what you have been through. This is a simple situation of settling on a cheap tstat because it is literally all you can afford and putting a animal and yourself at risk.

The part of your post that sparked this response was "And if it does fail i have a rheostat till i can get something else. I find it a lil retarted to spend $100 on something thats gonna do the same exact thing as a $35." This made me believe that you missed the entire point they were trying to make. What good is a dimmer for a dead snake? If it fails and its not found immediately it can burn your snake which like said above will not be cheap or in the worse case you can loose the snake. So the difference in spending 100 vs 35 is simple. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

I challenge you to search this forum and find somebody dealing with a burned snake or melted tubs that was using the top names of tstats that the serious keepers use. What you are going to find is cheap tstats failing repeatedly causing harm to animals and damaging enclosures. I have even seen some cause fires and we all know what fire can do to your home. None of those events are cheap.

I understand you don't want to spend alot but what I dont understand is how 100 bucks is considered alot when your talking about the safety of your pet and ultimately you. Be it your home or bank account. I again suggest you use the $50 option that VE just came out with. While I have not used it I'm sure they put the same quality in it that so many trust. Remember I had a Hydrofarm and it failed in the on position. I was super lucky and caught it within an hour. So lets take that and put you in the situation. Your Farm just failed so you order another one. You have now spend 70 on tstats so things start to add up. What if you don't find it soon enough? Now figure out the price of a vet visit and uth with that. Its alot more than just doing it right the first time.

When you said that you find it retarded to spend 100 over 35 for something that does the exact same thing you insulted the entire serious herp keeping community. Do the research and see what a good tstat does that the $35 does not. The nice tstats can control lights, humidity, night temp drop, have alarms for high and low temps, track temps, are digital, have safeties, have power options, timers, can simulate sunrise and sunset, replaceable probes and wires. You know what the $35 model does? It turns off and on. So you spend $130 for tstat that will do all that its actually cheaper when the price per feature is figured out.

Also nobody said you had to buy new. Check around online and see if you can't find a nice used tstat. They are out there. A few of my Herpstats were bought used. They were in great shape and saved me alot of green.

All im saying is dont judge someone before u really know them. Im not a bad owner. And i never said i couldnt afford this "hobby". Its just something came up and i cant spend $100 amd have to do the best i can. Im not gonna be putting my baby at risk. I literally check my temps every hour. Im ALWAYS home. My previous statement was an impulse and ive done a lil more research on tstats. I will be getting the VE hobbystat as its known to be more accurate. I didnt insult anyone, as there are alot of people that use hydrofarms and it works great for them.

It must be tiring getting up every hour checking your temp throughout the night.

Impulse? You have been getting plenty of info here yet you still choose the Hydro because of price. What changed?

I'm sorry but when you say that something that is used by most keepers is RETARDED that is insulting.

I also do not know why you feel judged. Nothing was personal and only your own comments were questioned.

I'm not suggesting your a bad owner at all. I just want you to be the best owner you can and you just didn't seem to be getting it.

Once the Hydrofarm users have a failure they may feel different as I did. Mine failed in 3 months and opened my eyes wide.
