    humidity.
Heys guys tring to get this tank thing under control. on the heat side the temp stays right at 80degrees and the humidity fluxes between 40% and 50% normally at 40%. is this a good temp and humidity? it looks like his first shed is coming because the top of his spin in fading. how do i control the humidity better? i spray his tank and this will bring it up to about 50% and drops back to 40% after a few hours. i seen alot of people say the dome light can make it harder to control the humidity and fyi my dome light has a day blue light build. i know when he starts to shed it will need to be higher. any suggestions and info. this is my tank setup right now! lmk https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui...5424-local0&zw

I can't see the pic but, the hot side needs to be 88-90 the cold side 78-82. Most important you need to get the temps right.
    What substrate are you using?

Raise the hot side to 88-90F. I have kept my 8 year old specimen of Python regius in a 40-gallon tank for his entire life...this tank's screen is not covered and is heated via lamp. I have never had an issue with humidity, I simply saturate the coconut bark bedding on a weekly basis.

the substrate im using is a terrarium liner, it came with the kit i bought. is that a good substrate? my heating sources are a uth the dome with the day blue light bulb and like i said it stays at 80degree according to gauge so is there a different heating source i need to use or what? . will i need a thermometer on both sides.

Reptile carpet/terrarium liners won't retain humidity. If you're going to use a glass tank with a dome light, etc. you'll want a substrate that keeps in humidity. Something like Eco Earth or a similar product :).

So could that be the reason it won't get any hotter as well?

What's your ambient room temps? That will have a bigger influence on the tank temps than substrate. You might want to upgrade to a ceramic heating element. Also, is your UTH on a thermostat? If not, turn it off and get one ASAP. I would recommend putting ecoearth or cypress mulch in there to up the humidity. You can also make a humid hide by putting damp moss under it.

My hot side averages 86-88 and my snake is doing great..it doesn't have to be exactly 88-90.. You can have it 86-92 for a hot side. Humidity 40-50

my set up is 86 hot side humidity around 50

my ambient room temp is between 75-80 degree. my uth does not have a thermostat and i will be sure to get one as soon as i wake up. i will also change his substrate to cypress mulch more than likely. Im getting a 40 gal tank tomorrow so ill be able to set it right this time with temp and humidity and all. so let me make sure i have this right for the hot side temp should be between 88-92 degree and cold side 78-82 degree. humidity should range between 40%-50% and when sheding around 70&. i am going with the cypress mulch more than likely. one more question should i have thermometers on both hot and cold side?

thanks man, hes a little over a foot long. i got him on the 1st on this month so its only been 6 days and i love it. i handle him once or twice a day for about 30 mins. is that ok?

When I get a new snake I handle them once they eat a meal. (to clarify I give them at least a day and a half to digest first) If they're eating that to me says they're comfortable enough in their new home. In the case of my newest girl she ate two days after arriving. I've started handling her a five minutes here and there. If she were to stop eating, I'd stop handling.

I wouldn't handle him more than once a day and preferably a couple times a week. If he is eating good I guess once per day would be Ok. He will probably need time to adjust to his new enclosure and since it's pretty big I'd leave him be until he eats for you

Actually it's the opposite... feed him in his enclosure. It is less stressful on the snake and less chance of you getting bit. 99% of the people on here feed in the snakes everyday enclosure.
As for the uth and thermostat, you have to buy those separate.
If you have to order the thermostat online, get a light dimmer to control the uth until the thermostat comes in.
The thermometer you can get at Walmart

o ok then, what do you mean a light dimmer to CONTROL the uth? how does that work?
  • 11-08-2013, 12:02 AM
    Crazymonkee
You plug the uth power cord into the light dimmer then plug that into the outlet. You can control the output of the uth by dimming it until you get the proper temp

ok, so is there a certain temp i would want the uth to be?

Oh yes definitely... without something controlling the uth it can reach 130+ degrees which can burn your snake. You want to dim it down so it reads 90 on your hot spot. A thermostat is definitely better but the dimmer will do until you can get one

ok, any suggestions of a place to get one?

I use the Zilla temp controller, like $30 at Petco.
Amazon has a Hydrofarm thermostat for $40.
Then there are the more expensive ones... Herpstat is great.
