Any Honda Civic/ Civic Si Owners?
After a good long talk with my fiance on what I should do about a new car after totaling mine a few weeks ago we both came to agreement on the fact that it should be something relatively newer, since I now have a somewhat better job I can afford a larger monthly payment and since I have been working on building up my credit score I should be able to get a decent loan...that and I have been at my new job for almost a year and they like to see that when handing out money.

Between me and my fiance we decided I really should wait to be able to put down a good down payment on a car to get a lower monthly payment and with the baby due in December we really need to save for other things, plus since I am paying my fiances bills because she is out of work I really can't afford the extra payment for insurance and the loan right now. So the plan is to save up about $4,000 or so for the down payment which will take a little bit of time but be worth it in the long run, plus with a baby here in a few months my mind will be elsewhere anyways. We also decided that if I was going to get a new/ newer vehicle that it should be something I am happy with having for a while, since my last vehicle was bought on a whim because of the price and that fact we were driving to the Hamburg PA show the next day Lol.

I was dead set on the 2009 or later Scion xB, but after thinking about it I really wouldn't be happy unless I got something with a little power behind it. I have grown up with nothing but V8s and high output motors...my last car was my only 4 cylinder I ever had, and it was embarassing sometimes driving it having trouble getting to even 70 on a hill with my foot to the floor. So after looking around and realizing that a Subaru WRX is really out of my budget even for a used one I have fallen on the new 2012-2013 Honda Civic Si Sedans. I went and looked at a couple the other day at the local dealer and they are NICE....plus the 6-speed and 201hp i-VTECH engine so tempting. The ones I was looking at even came with backup cameras, bluetooth wireless connectivity, pandora incorperated, Tunablity from in the driver's seat on what the HP is looking like and your aaverage MPG, plus all the other bells and whistles anyone can need. Plus the back seats and truck have some pretty good room to them. I thought about test driving one, but I didn't want to give them the impression that I was ready to buy right now like some dealers I know.

My question for you guys is for the Civic and Si owners on here if you could let me know how you like them. My fiance said they have amazing crash test ratings...which is a plus for convicing the fiance (Baby on Board sticker on the rear window ;) ) I mainly want to know comfort for the taller person (I'm 6'1" and need my leg room) along with how it rides/drives.

Pretty much how you like it and if it's worth the $24k price tag?

    Thanks for any help,

    Kevin

for you all to see here is a link to the one I was really drawn to when I went to look.

I have had my 2009 Xb doing 110mph could have gotten it higher but I was running out of road fast lol. It's a light car so it is quick and handles great at any speed. If you can make it to the BBQ I will let you drive it. Or if you go to the Corning ny expo on the 31 you could drive it.

I have a civic Si it's a 2011 so it has the 2.0L the one you are looking at has a 2.4L so a bit more torque that's about it, they are very fun, very reliable daily driver. I would personally get the 2013 because after the first year of making the 2012 they did a face lift version which is the 2013 which IMO looks nicer, my car handles great, and easily gets past 110 Lol. I've gone at it with GTIs, 2.0t gen coupes, s2000s, 350z, frs/brz and they all loose lol also I've gone at it with a few stock WRX's and v8 mustangs and my civic has stood it's ground for a 4cyl. Of course I have a few mods but.... Also there is a road called "the dragon" that me and my buddies go to, when I was leading with my friend in his Wrx behind me after a few turns I lost him. These cars handle awesome! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/13/segynure.jpg

I have a 2006 honda civic LX. It runs perfectly, never had any major issues.

I have a 2011 Civic and I've had friends with all models and years as well. The older ones are much easier to service - now they are trying to mash all of the components up UNDER the dash which makes it difficult. The good news is they rarely need repairs or service because they're so reliable. I had Acuras (Honda made) and a Toyota Celica and they were great. I got a Cadillac and the thing had a problem once a month and crapped out at 130k miles. I'm never getting an american made car again.

I have an 08 civic si and I love it! My husband has an accord and loves it too. If your used to bigger engines, not sure you'd want a civic though. They have some kick to them but the vtec is a joke compared to some other things I've driven like a wrx or turbo stage 3 lancer.

It's a good family of 3 or 4 car, but if I was going to have a baby I would be looking at accords or maybe a Nissan. They have a lot more interior, back seat room and still have decent pick up.

IMO the newer civics don't have as much kick as the older ones that are dohc. I'm not sure about the numbers but I've owned a lot of Hondas over the years and prefer an older one with a few mods for the track, and the newer one to get me to work and back :).

I've always loved my civics. I liked my older one better though. My older car was a 2003 Si (which is still going to this day! Albeit it's had some parts replaced but the body and all is still mint. That's saying something!) I currently drive a 2009 (both coupes, not sedans) and its definitely roomier than the older style. I do a lot of driving, both city and highway and it's great on gas! The only complaint I have is that the newer styles are so high in the back and there's not really a clear view of the blind spot, I can blame that on being short though, I'm only 5'4"....probably not a problem at 6'1". Lol.

    These were my first thoughts.

Didn't even finish reading the post. You're becoming a father, you have a baby on the way. You do NOT need something with more power underneath the hood. You don't need to worry about speed. I don't even care if the kid isn't in the car. You do something dumb speeding and angela will be left as a single mom. You should be concerned about the safety rating for your kid. Also, you're gunna want cargo space for strollers, diaper bags, pack n play (if you go on vacation thats what they sleep in and those are pretty big) etc. You want great gas mileage to be saving money. Kids are expensive so most likely this will be the car you own for like 10+ years. When the kids into sports and you have to haul around all their sports n school crap and their friends crap then you won't be able to in a civic. When you're not a parent you don't think about a lot of the little things that could make your life easier. Bending down to get a baby out of the car is fine when they're young. Once they start getting heavier its a pain in the ass lol. An xb is up higher so you're not bending over to get the car seat out. Another example that comes to mind is it's ideal to have multiple diaper bags so you don't have to haul the same one around everywhere. Idk how big a civics trunk is but i know the xb has plenty of room to keep a spare one in. Just crap like that adds up.

Tbh, if i were you, i'd be looking at subaru foresters. Same size and space as an xb but you have the AWD for the snow in the winter. I know you guys get a lot of snow in Upstate NY and my subie is a tank in the snow ;)

I really don't care if that came off as harsh. In fact i hope it kinda did to make you really think hard. :gj:

EDIT: wow just read the rest of it and all of the responses. Maybe i'm in the wrong here but i don't think sports cars and babies mix. Just my opinion i guess....

LOL my car made 187hp to the wheels stock, which is more then any older civic or CTR, then I got intake header and exhaust and tuned now I'm making 230whp the newer "k" series motors are very restricted from factory, but do simple bolt ons and you make decent numbers, the k20 has the most potential out of any Honda motor. All older Honda motors such as the b18c1, the "b" meaning its a b series and b series are dohc, the "18" representing the the size of the motor 1.8L, and the "c" indicating the engine specific model with in the 1.8L group. This motor was put in the Acura GS-R which I would consider the fastest "older Honda motor" and even at that the made 170 to the crank (and a quarter mile time of 15.7.) So about 160 to the wheels. The weight difference isn't much either, so I'm kind of confused as to why you say they have more kick and you'd prefer them for the track.

I prefer older ones because they are easier to work on and have more options for modifying. I was running low 15's with my del sol (b16a3 since you know what that means ;) ) best time was 14.9 with small mods nothing major and the engine had 145000 miles on it.

I don't have any kids on the way nor do I see that day coming any time soon, so I like to toy around with my car, but the day that happens is the day I will be looking for a Volvo due to their outstanding safety rating lol :hiding: :giggle:

I wrecked my first car. It was an '88 corolla and I rear ended an '04 volvo sedan. (Yes i was following too closely but she didn't use a turn signal. Lesson learned :p). My car was totaled. Her freaking taillight had a crack in it. The paint on her car didn't even chip, just scuffed. The swedes don't build cars, those things are tanks! Lmao.

Looked at the xbs for the wife and ended up with a low mileage Honda element..She loves it, has a solid ride, plenty of pep, a ton of room inside, elevated back seats, No carpet so its easy to clean.. The stock stereo booms..They stopped production in 2011, their a bit funky looking and turn heads, the suicide doors are not common and allows for big items to be loaded..A great ride all in all..just a thought..
    PS..
If you have an active lifestyle and haul pets or critters around it was voted the dogs best ride..

Lol I'd love to but I made a promise to my husband I wouldn't spend any major money on the cars anymore and it is my daily driver... Gotta keep the toys and daily drivers separate. And I'm trying to talk my dad into giving me his 76 camaro to restore. Been sitting at our shop for 15 years going to waste. Really want to dump some money into that beauty.

Elements are really nice. My dads company bought them for all the tech guys. They're all well over 200K miles, some over 300K, and running strong with just regular maintenance. The floors are all rubber like you said so when junior spills food in there it'd be super easy to clean. ;)

I really like the element they are pretty unique looking and cool, but I only really like the "sc" version, because you don't get that two tone, with paint and plastic, the sc is all one color.

Forgive me while I go Mom on you...

How come Mike is the only one thinking about the most important thing here??

Speed and engine should not be your top priorities for a new baby car. Safety, dependability, crash ratings, fuel economy, room, cargo space. Does your car seat fit properly? Not how fast it can go. Kids are expensive, so I would plan on having it for a long time. Also, as far as mods and stuff, I would be saving money for clothes and diapers instead. You will go through a ton of those. They outgrow clothes like crazy. And diapers arent cheap. Neither is daycare. Your world and priorities are about to change.

When I was pregnant I had a smaller vehicle. When we went to install the carseat, it didnt fit properly. Sure it went in and buckled in, but according to manufacture directions, there wasnt enough space between that and the front seat back. Now, I was the car seat nazi, but still. Its all about safety. We went and traded that in for an suv. You are going to need lots of room for stroller, play pens, diaper bags, groceries. Then when they get older hauling around them and their stuff and their friends. I could not get by without an suv. With all the stuff I haul between her and the animals and what not. If you are in an area that gets snow, I would definitely make a priority to get something with 4 wheel drive as well. You want to be safe driving around in all conditions.

Hondas are good dependable cars. But I would definitely be looking into a family car, not a little sports car, no matter what make, Honda, Scion, Subaru, whatever.

Just my 2 cents, but I think your whats important in a car list needs to be reevaluated.

That's why I still say get an xB. Lots of room, good gas mileage, safe, reliable, and comfortable. And it has some speed so when your baby is NOT in the car you can still have some fun.

Re: Any Honda Civic/ Civic Si Owners?
I'm not sure why everyone is up in arms about a Civic sedan not being a child safe vehicle. It's a perfectly safe car so long as one is a responsible and safe driver. Just because the replies turned this into a comparision of power and mods doesn't mean that was the intent of the OP. I could be wrong but I doubt it is his intent to zoom around in a "sportscar" endangering his new baby. I think with his first baby on the way, a sedan is a perfectly fine option and as for room, I have moved numerous times over the years using a Civic - even I am shocked by the amount of stuff I managed to fit into it with careful object placement! ...and NO, before anyone rips me a new one, I am not advocating he bury his baby amidst a backseat full of dangerous items, LOL. I've noticed the trunks are quite roomy compared to other cars.

Obviously, as seems to be the consensus here, an SUV would be the way to go if that's an option and you plan on keeping it for long enough that A. you have too many kids to fit in a car or B. your kids are old enough that you are toting around friends and sports equipment. But thats a ways off I would say. If you and your significant other both like a Civic and it fits in your price range, I would think it's a fine choice.

Note: Please disregard everything I said if you are planning to put your child at risk being all Fast & Furious with it. :P

I agree that thinking of the kid on the way is the go here, I think the cargo space, safety, and general features of the car have been covered, but I don't think anyone has really mentioned price tag.

I would personally not go for a $24k car, or a 2013, I would go for something a bit cheaper with a couple years on it, and used or better yet certified used. Yes, go new-er, but not brand new. Just because you can get approved for the loan doesn't mean you should be spending so much. Go for something a bit cheap, $14k or $16k will be paid off a lot faster and have cheaper monthly payments than a $24k car. The insurance is going to be a lot higher on a more expensive car as well. Kids are expensive, you may find yourself regretting a more expensive, newer purchase.

First I would like to thank everyone for all the comments, however I think things got a little taken the wrong direction here.

#1) I was not planning any mods for the vehicle...since they cost money and with 201hp it's they are not really needed.

#2) I go through Allstate for my insurance because with them I can get a "chip" to keep track of my driving and get 10% off a month if I don't brake excessively and keep it under 80.

I am actually kinda offeneded that people think I want to do nothing but speed around in it, I truly don't do over 70mph on the highway and am one of the only ones I know that actually do the speed limit.

Mike - I have looked at subaru's I really really like the legacy's, but I have yet to find one with lower miles for less than a small fortune. Trust me I would really like the AWD in the winter. Especially with the baby.

I still love love the xB's and after reading this they are still on the table, I might take you up on that offer to drive it Toyota89 (Sorry I forgot your actual name :( ) I will see if I can make it to the Corning show and the cook out.

Like I said I have a while to look and decide, plus I have not driven any of the cars mentioned so I may not even like the feel of the civic.

I hope this straightens things up a little and I appreciate all the comments, especially from Mike, Toyota, DooLittle, and Nicole.

Plus I guess I really don't need anything with to much power since I have my fully built and blueprinted 1976 BMW 2002 with about 350 horsies that is track ready...just needs a cage and to be painted which will be done by next spring.....that has some get up and go, plus it can be done safely on a licensed track/Drag strip

Pretty sure in the OP you said you were thinking about getting an Xb but you said you didn't think you'd be happy with something that doesn't have power? Jes sayin. So I feel like that's how we got on that topic, you showed interest in power

Good i'm glad you were offended, I wanted to make sure I stirred you up a bit to get you rethinking everything because doing what you said would be a mistake imo.

You say you're looking to save money by getting smaller monthly payments but you're looking at a $24K car... You do realize that means you're looking at like a $400-500 payment and probably $200+ insurance per month. If you even get approved and if you put like $4K down. You're gunna be needing that money for baby crap bc babies aren't cheap. Seriously, ask people with kids how much stuff costs and add it all up.

The reason i assumed you wanted something to play with was bc you didnt even mention most of the things i did in your OP. You just talked about all the engine stuff and crap.

No way a 400-500 dollar payment, and someone said get something used? Well you get a better interest rate when you buy brand new also you can write off the deprecation value.

$24K car. After taxes and fees round it to $26K even. Minus the $4K he's putting down.

$22K/48months= $458.33/month plus whatever they charge you for interest. 5%=$481.25/month
    10%= $504.16/month

    $22K/60months= $366.66/month plus interest
    5%= $384.99/month
    10%= $403.33/month

Someone correct me if i'm wrong...

From personal experience in the passenger seat, the SI's are pretty sporty IMHO. Lol

Thanks Mike for the stirring, you always seem to get me to think clearly. Hence part of the reason I have you as a friend....because your money savey haha. I'm just going to chill driving Angela's car for a while, as small and cramped as it is I really need to save. I did just start fixing up my BMW again which just needs some body work and paint, plus some new bushings for the tranny which my dad who is a mechanic can do all from home for nothing or next to nothing. I figure I will drive that next summer to work (It was a 5 seater car, but we yanked the rear seats for weight reduction, however I may put them back in so I can have the baby with me if need be.).

I actually really like the idea that it's paid for and I won't have a monthly payment on it other than insurance which should not be too outragious since it's a 1976. And a non "sports" car....even though it's got a fully built motor Lol.

Leave the seats out. Baby goes in trunk over drive wheels. Got to have proper weight distribution, you know...:D

1976 beemer = not at all safe for a kid. My first car was an '88 corolla and the back seat didnt even have full seat belts. Theres no way a '76 would have the right hookups for a modern baby car seat lol.

True statement, I guess I never even thought about the seatbelt situation in the back since it never really had one.

Yep, you need them to hook up the car seat. The ones i've used it went right through them.

Now that I think about it I'm pretty sure they have both the shoulder harness and lap belt in the back...I could be wrong but I am pretty sure that I remember seeing that when I was working on it yesterday, but like I said I haven't had a back seat in it since I first got it Lol. Honestly, I wouldn't want to use it as a baby transporter but it's a car I don't have to buy and make payments on so I shouldn't really be complaining right?
