    Possibly new pick up
    So its that time to get another snake to build up my collection. But i hae a few questions. I would like to breed down the road possibly to try it out. I am looking at a bci. There is a male and female. Both anery 100%het snow.

    Here are my questions.

    What exactly does 100% het mean? Will i get snows when i breed?

    should i go for the male or female first? I plan on buying its partner a year down the road.

    It means it is heterozygous(Aa) for that gene. For recessive genes to physically show they need to be homozygous (aa) for the recessive gene.

    So lets use "a" to represent the gene for albinism. For a snake to actually show albinism it must be homozygous or (aa) but if its 100% het it would be (Aa).

    100% her anery snow means that it is for sure het for that specific gene(Aa). But if you bred that to another that is her for anery snow then there is only a 66% chance that it is get for that gene. (The 66% was a random number I picked for the example)
    Any other questions?

    100% het means that one of the parents was a visual snow and the offspring carry 1/2 of the genes needed to produce the visual affect. snow is a double recessive mutation. albino and anery. add the co-dominant hypo gene to that combo and make moonglows. if you breed 1.1 anery 100% het albino (a.k.a anery 100% het for snow) you will get all anerys. 50% of them should be snow and the other 50% will be anery and have a 66% chance of being het for albino. There is way more technicial explanation but this is the non-nerd explanation. if you need the geek version i'd suggest going to vmsherp.com and look in the learning center. they have genetics explained in way more detail. even will teach you how to do multi gene punnet squares to figure your out comes from breeding. If you are thinking about breeding in the future i'd suggest getting that anery het snow female this year and a snow male next year. that way the female has an extra year of growth, they will mature about the same time, and you will get snows, and anerys 100% het snow instead of the non snows only having a 66% chance for het. 100% bring more money and are easier to move than possible hets. Honestly i'd probably buy a female ghost 100% het albino (a.k.a tripple het moonglow) and a snow male next year. then you got a shot at ghost het snow, snows, moonglows all from the same clutch. I think thats correct. lol if its not then i'm sure someone else will step in and correct whatever i messed up. lol I'm fairly new to boa morphs.

    so say i get one of these anery 100% het snow and breed it to say a sunglow. would i get any snows, and sunglows or would they all be anery? I guess it really donesnt matter since i dont plan on breeding for money just to see it done first hand and pass a few snakes along or keep a few.

    You would not get Snows in that case.

    Sunglow = Albino + Hypo

    Snow = Anery + Albino

    You would be doing Anery het Albino (het Snow) X Hypo Albino (Sunglow)

    So everything would look Albino or Normal, and all would be 100% het Anery and 50% possible hey Hypo

    I think that is correct...

    Almost. Hypo is a co-dom trait in boas not recessive like balls. So they would be normals 100% het anery and 100% het albino(double het snow), Albinos 100% het anery, sunglows 100% het anery (triple het moonglow), and hypos 100% het albino and 100% het anery. I think that's all the possible out comes.

    Ahhh yea I forgot about that. Kinda assumed everyone knew that. There's the kahl line albino and sharp line and t+ none of which are compatible. So make sure you figure put what line you want to work with and keep them seperate from other lines. But there's a morph that is a visual het that's called a paradime? (think that's what its called) That's het sharp and het t+ but that's a whole another subject.

    You're learning my friend:gj: It's called a Paradigm which is a double het for albino and caramel.

    I need a genetic calculator for rtb's lol. I haven't found one. The one for balls is awesome. Made it sooo much easier to learn my morphs that way. I just got back into boas this year. I had a female Suriname and a hypo colombian male that I bred in 99 and 00. Then I got divorced and she took them. I had no clue about genetics at all back then. I was selling them to pet shops 10 for $300 lol.

    I'm going to third that and wish to high heaven there was a genetic calculator for boas that was as good as the one out there for BPs. Anyone here a computer wiz/programmer and wanna take on the challenge??? :please::please::please:

    BTW, you all did a great job explaining genetics for the OP! I saw this question come up while I was still in the hospital and wanted to answer it so badly! But I only had my phone to work with while there and texting a detailed answer on genetics while on a morphine drip was just not happening, lol........... :D

    thanks alot guys. i just dont understand why boas are not as popular as balls. is it because the size and there isnt as many morphs?

    I think size does have a lot to do with it. Compared to balls, boas get much larger. And they need a larger enclosure too - balls don't mind being cramped which means you can fit more snakes in a given area. But boas like to stretch out and need some interaction/stimulation in their environments so they need a bigger cage relative to their size than balls do.

    I think there really are nearly as many morphs in boas as there are in balls, or at least the possibility is there. But boa morphs are still kind of "up and coming" while there are new ball morphs popping out every year. Boas are slower to mature, thus slower to prove out. :gj:

    Think im gonna email owal reptiles and see if he would be into the challenge. think i'd actually offer a small compinsation for it.

    Thank you! Ive been doing my home work but still feel like i'm way behind the curve. lol I've got John Berrys book designer morphs: ball pythons and boa constrictors vol. 2 that I got when i started into ball morphs. didnt ever look at the boa secton until this year lol. Great book but its a little dated for balls now.

    Unless I want to spend a few thousand dollars per animal it'll be a few years of growing up the ingredients that I need. I'm wanting a moonglow aztec. Im cheap so i'm looking at picking up a moonglow female this year and an aztec male next year. So raise them up until maybe 2016 (if i'm lucky and they grow steadily)and produce my hets. hold back female aztec het moonglows from that pairing and repeat the original pairing in 2017 and hold back male aztec het moon glows from that year. and hopefully pair the aztec het moon glows in 2020. If the odds gods favor me i'll get a super aztec super hypo moon glow or two. lol and i'm looking at 6 years to get my sunglow arabesque if my girl dont prove out het for albino. pairing in 2014 Sunglow male x hypo arabesque 66% pos het albino. so if i dont hit the odds or she dont prove out it'll be like 2018 before im likely to pair one of the arabesque 100% het albino females from the 2014 pairing back to dad. I could buy a sunglow arabesque but evenstar bought the best lucking one i've ever seen so if I cant have that one i'm obligated to make my own. lol

    OMG!! Can't believe I followed all that, lol.... Best of luck in producing that AMAZING Aztec Moonglow!! I have my heart set on a raptor, lol, and considering their price, I'm sure it'll take just as long for me to make super raptors - or longer. (pssst... While I was STILL in the hospital, I took another plunging step toward a moonglow project of my own and purchased a stupendous female Snow - pics to come once she arrives weather permitting....).

    Haaahhaaha! Well, I do have a waiting list for Pandora's future offspring - which won't be until 2016 or so! She's still just a wittle wormy worm..... :wuv:

    But I'll add you to it!! And I am hoping to have some aberant patterned and genetic striped ghosts maybe next year, depending on growth. ;)

    So many of the high-end pattern morphs (like aztecs and raptors) are out of my immediate reach so I'm concentrating on a few morphs that are more within my grasp, like moonglows, ghosts, and sunglows, but with really wonky and high-quality patterns like Pandora. I hope to produce lots of arabesques like her and hope that she and my male genetic stripe can improve upon some of the basics. Keeping my eyes open for a high-pattern, stellar jungle too.....

    Haaha! No, I just luv'd your enthusiasm! Sure you can use Pandora's pic! But I'll try to get some better ones with a more decent background. She's grown a bit and she was in shed in that pic above. So you might want to hold off for a bit. And you have to send me a copy of the poster, lol!! :gj:
