Are Spiders really *this* weird? [aka OMG...I thought he was dead!]
So I wake up this morning and naturally, go check on the snakes.

Leon the Spider was mostly in his hide but his neck and head were sticking out of the hide stiff and upside down against the base of his climbing tree at about a 45 degree angle.

    I freaked.

I didn't even want to open his house and touch him...I *knew* he must've dropped dead suddenly for no apparent reason.

But then I opened his lid and reached in to get him and he seemed to startle awake.

I think he was sleeping like that.

I held him for a bit, put him back and gave him fresh water.

He rambled around a few minutes, drank some water and went back in his hide.

He's been unusually active since this heat wave stuff started and he's at the 1000 g. wall and is off and on about eating.

Can Spiders be so screwy that they'll sleep with their head/neck upside down??

[oh, how I love to start my day with a near heart attack]

Yeah. I have a honey bee that literally lays upside down. He looks like he's dead.... but no, he is just a spider/morph

Yup, that is normal. Spiders are dorks and every one we ever had did goofy stuff. We've even got a normal that does quirky stuff like that.

    Oh, thank heaven.

Thanks everybody...if there's a 'next time' that I find him looking like mortified road kill, my heart won't stop beating for a few seconds when I see him.

I suppose I should have just assumed "He is a Spider"] *first*.

One time, I thought my Bee was either having seizures or dying because he was corkscrewing and flinging himself all over the place.

He had a little bit of aspen stuck on his lip and was going berserk trying to get rid of it.

["normally" he acts a bit berserk even if there's nothing bothering him]

    Spider genes
    ...such fun.

They are definitely different... My spider was a nut job, he was the only snake I've ever had that didn't give me any warning pose, he just turned and bit me every now and again for no reason.

Wait until the first time you find your breeding female lying completely upside down. I mean, completely and totally upside down! Talk about stopping your heart.

Better yet, wait until you have a young breeding male disappear from his female's tub, and about the time you notice he is gone, you notice the female looks really swollen and is acting all funny. And you think you just witnessed cannibalism first hand. Only to discover the brat boy curled up on the heat tape behind the females tub a short while later!

I think these guys live to give us heart seizures.

Someone really needs to start a picture thread of Spiders (or any other morph) doing bizarre things like this. As soon as I can get Ajja to curl up in her cinnamon roll and go to sleep on my chest again, when I actually HAVE a camera, I'm snapping pics.

Well, after i went home replaced the plug in the kitchen (pyro dog) then prayed that he hadn't started a fire in the walls ( infrared heat detection) I heated up my bp's meals.. Got down stairs knowing they needed fresh water placed Aurora's rat on his screen... The little bugger was trying to grab it already....

New plan offer now then fill water so I grabbed it by the tail... Not thinking (with my fingers) tongs were right there DOH slid back the lid and wham with the blink of an eye he had it.... He proceeds to land in his water dish and stayed there till he had killed his rat again lol..

He never ceases to amaze me at his willingness to eat lol, Diablo on the other hand.. Practically makes me hold the rat in the center of his tank dripping on him for 5 minutes, all the while the stupid cat is poking her head in there as to say hey what's the deal here how come I don't get rats as a snack lol

I immediately thought of this post lol

My spider girl is coming up on 4 years old, and doesn't seem to show any of these symptoms that everyone else talks about with spiders... Am I just that lucky I guess? She has a very very tiny head wobble when shes in a tight attack stance after I drop a rat in her tank, but that's it. I couldn't imagine waking up to find her sleeping upside down. I too would have a minor heart attack!

Sounds like your guys Spiders have some mild to sever cases of head wobble. It does effect spider gened morphs such as the Bee lines as well. My big female has a moderate case of head wobble too. She does sleep with her head at an angle sometimes. I agree they are crafty creatures. Biggest scare i had was when i opened the tub of my male lesser and low and behold he wasnt there! took me a couple moments of looking around the room before i found him hiding in the very back of the tub underneath the newspaper!

It sounds like your spider has a really bad case of head wobble. I personally always feel bad for them some people say its cute and stuff but when i see a spider flip its head completely backwards or spaz out and they cant control it makes me feel bad. I dont like they devolop that trait i really enjoy the spider lines and what their genes due to other morphs

I could kick myself for not having one Wed. night.

My new little Fire baby has been eating by just politely picking up her hopper and carrying it into her hide.

This last time, she discovered that she was...a snake!

I laid the mouse at the door of her little half-coconut shell and all of sudden, her head shot out and then straight up and she came down upon it shaped exactly like a hammer.

She sort of "pounded" it with her nose, grabbed it in her mouth, pathetically "killed" it with a half-hearted "I have no idea why I'm doing this" coil and then stuck her little skinny neck straight up in the air at least 6 inches, waving the poor squished hopper all around, crazily.

At last, she dragged inside and ate it.

Such a display of primal savagery out of a such an itty-bitty little 98 gram snakeling.

I thought I was gonna cry, I was laughing so hard.

    I wish I'd had a camera.

That's how mine got the name "short bus", He doesn't show any signs of wobble until after nightfall, then he twists his head and neck straight back over his back and does his stevie wonder impersonation. He does two things very well though, eat and breed. Here's a pic of one of his offspring, she hasn't showed any signs of wobble yet.

There is no reason to avoid the spider gene. They eat and survive just fine. I personally love them. :)

    You want mine?

    He's completely buggy.

Ever since the heat wave started, he's been rambling and trying to get out of his house like crazy.

Not a single blessed thing has changed in his surroundings or husbandry but he's gone totally starkers.

Ours only seems to get weird around feeding time. She's a voracious eater though and its a bit like she's doing a little feed-me dance. She kind of reminds me of this little girl:

It's not just spiders that are all wonky. Last time I fed Ajja, she was all the way out of her hide when I offered her her first mouse. I'm standing there by the tank holding this mouse, and I started laughing so hard I nearly dropped it. She's laying there all stretched out and WAGGING the tip of her tail! Hey python... You're not a rattlesnake. You're a python. She's gotta be het for something, there's no way she's completely "normal"

There are different degrees of wobble to each spider. But they seem to be some of the best eaters. My bee has never missed a meal. She will even eat in complete blue. She is also my mellowest bp. I love her. :)

Personally I disagree with the statement that they eat and live just fine. When I first got my boy brood when he was 8 months old I never saw a problem, he never shook or twirled and his strikes were always dead on. He just turned 2 in june, his twirling started little after his 1st birthday and now eating is very hard on him. He shakes so much its almost a vibration and even if the rat it touching his face he still misses. He went 4 weeks without food and not for lack of trying he would just get so put off with not being able to get the rat he would just give up.

I'm not against spiders, and I realize some people will never believe there is a problem but I still think its wrong to tell everyone that they are all fine, and Brood is proof even young ones that start out without a visible problem can end up with one. There are lots of spider morphs I would love to own but I never will.

    I'm on the fence, myself.

Leon is still doing his frantic rambling so I took his climbing tree away in hopes of removing as much 'stimuli' as possible because he almost gets something like OCD going.
He'll start slithering around the branches and through the holes and it's like he can't stop doing it.
I was worried he was sick or my husbandry was off but am now wondering if this isn't more of a neuro issue.

He's been less 'weird' since I took it out.

He just turned 1 [and I assume has hit puberty] and before this summer, he had absolutely no wobbles or other problems at all.

Ozzy, the 7 year old Bee is just a twirling, corkscrewing mess.

He only eats live and his "kills" are so horrid that I can't bear to do more than hold the mouse still until he strikes and then I have to look away or leave the room.

The mice never have an easy death.

I do worry that the day will come for one of them that they can no longer feed properly and I'll have to make a terrible decision.

Unfortunately, Spider genes are in some of the most incredible combos and that's "just how things are".

I'm not a snake breeding expert but if we were talking Dobermanns who were gorgeous animals but had these 'issues', I definitely would not ever use them as breeding stock.

    Here we go....

Then don't own any, more for me. There are different degrees of wobble. There are plenty out there that do just fine, or else they wouldn't be around. How many do you know that have starved to death because they couldn't eat? I haven't heard of any. Most people I have seen on here that have spiders, none have a detrimental wobble, and that's a lot of spiders. I think the "train wreck" ones are minority. And there are plenty of other morphs out there that "have a problem", its part of breeding- kinking, duckbill, bug eyes..... They aren't all going to be the same degree of that problem. I wouldn't ever tell anybody not to get one because it could have wobble. This is an arguement that's been around forever. To each their own. Me, I love the spiders and bees. :)

My only BP is a Spider and sure enough, he definitely has some crazy little quirks. He wobbles slightly at feeding time (or other times hes excited) and even though I haven't found him sleeping upside down, he tries to EAT upside down a lot. :rofl:Honestly, he's about the sweetest little snake ever and I definitely don't regret picking a spider. And he's a fantastic eater. Seriously, if it kind smells like ANY rodent, is close enough in shape/size, and relatively the right temp... he'll tag it voraciously. I can switch between mice and rats no problemo and even though I haven't tried it, I'm 100% positive F/T would be no issue either. He's hissed at me once cause I was messing with him when he was in blue but otherwise he almost seems to enjoy getting out and being handled. :) I love hearing these stories about their wackiness.
