New addition, SD Retics
Hey everyone, just wanted to show off the newest additions. Got a great deal on a pair of SD Retics. I uploaded a few images to the member gallery. Once I figure out how load them to a thread I will. The pictures do them no justice, the iridescence on them is unreal. We cant wait to get them to breed. I will be keeping these as true %100 SD Retics.

Re: New addition, SD Retics
Gorgeous, thanks for sharing! Where did you get them from? They are the next species I will be adding in a couple of months!

As much as i don't like to admit it or push it but I was playing around on craigslist and found a local guy that had them and was moving. He needed to get rid of them so I had to take them. Yea I know, I'm a sucker. Oh well. They are amazing creatures and I can't wait for them to settle in and possibly breed for me.

People need to understand Cl isn't a bad place like most believe, it has a LOT of trolls and its share of stupidity, but some honest people do use it. Though I wouldn't say post up your pastel highway for sale on there if you had.one. ;) but it can be a good place and have honest.people.

Nice pickup, they're gorgeous. Good luck with them.

You are right. Not all is bad on craigslist. But I am still leery about picking up a snake, or any live animal for that matter on craigslist, you just never know what you are going to get and what condition its in.
This pair was just too good of a deal to pass up. They both seem healthy, they are active and have a retic personality, always in your business. They are both clean, no bugs of any sort, seem to be a good weight. The guy I got them off of showed me the rest of his collection, which was a good thing and he had the on F/T which is even better.

Re: New addition, SD Retics
Sweet additions, congrats! How big are they?
-
The female is right about 8', maybe an inch or two longer at 5 years old. The male is 5.5' and is 4 years old.
-
Great pics, I love retics.
-
Awesome nice pick up. The only problem from getting those from someone on cl is they could have lied and thy are not 100% sd and end up with 18 ft snakes. Not trying to be a downer but things like that I consider a risk just like if they were hets.

You def have a point. But I'd they turn into full grown retics then that means I just added to my collection. For the price I paid on them, I made out. I'm hoping they are SD's but if not, ohh well. Just that much more snake to love and care for.

Is the size difference pretty significant with the SDs? What length would you say you are expecting in the female later in her life?
-
If they show true like any other python my guess for the female would be about 9.5'-10'. The male would be about 6.5', but that is just my guess. I don't have a ton of experience with the SD's.
Both the snakes are almost 5 years old so they should be relatively close to their adult size.
-
Of all the adult female SD's that I have encountered, the average size is around 6 - 7 feet. Perhaps yours has some dwarf genes in there as well. 8 feet is a tad large.
In any event, congrats on the gorgeous pick ups!

Nice snakes! Tape on the probe though?! :colbert:

Sd's usually stay in the 6-9 ft rang, reg Dwarfs can get up to about 12 ft or so.

The tape is temporary. If have them in a couple of my prototype cages. I will eventually route a groove for the wire to sit in.

I've seen SDs around 8-9'. All the really tiny ones are usually the ones that are true SDs. I've seen 4' tiger SDs but they aren't 100 percent. As of now there are not any SD morphs out there that are %100.

Re: New addition, SD Retics
I really hate to say this, but those are not SD retics. Those are normal mainland retics and will get big. When it comes to these kind of retics, unfortunately cl is not a good place to find them. It is best to do a little research and buy them from a reputable breeder. This is what a SuperDwarf should look like...

I'm glad you said it because I was thinking the same thing initially. The female is already too big to be an SD. A true SD, meaning a Kayudi or Koaloata locale would be 5ft for an adult male and 5 1/2 to possibly 6ft for an adult female. I owned an imported male of roughly 5-6 years of age which was a thin and tiny 5ft.
There are also the Honey Island SD's which are generally less than a foot bigger and slightly thicker than the true SD's. My own Honey Island female is an adult of 4 1/2-5 years old now and barely 6ft.
Then there are the Dwarf species which get quite a bit larger. A Dwarf female can reach the same size as a mainland male.
It's possible that yours are dwarf Retic's I suppose, but they couldn't be true SD's. The scales on the head of the one I can see are a clear indicator of that. All of these Retic sub species have different head scale count, shape, and pattern, as well as a different number of heat pits. The eye color of yours is wrong too.
Please read this thread. I put diagrams in post #10 for reference.

Thanks for the responses about them. I am hoping they turn out to be dwarfs. I am very new to retics, you got to learn some how. I was told SD but I was skeptical about it but for a pair at $150 I had to. I have the means and capability for retics just lack true ownership experience. I have worked with many of them and have friends that breed them, so it's not like I just jumped into it without looking. All in time. But thanks again for all the info on them.

Cl is definitely not the place to look for hets regardless of the species or dwarf or super dwarf animals, when you are looking for something as specific as a SD Retic you need to find the right breeder that works with those animals and there are not that many however Travis is one of them ;) http://www.traviskubes.com/
Buying from a REPUTABLE breeder is far more important than getting a good deal because more often than not when you get a good deal especially from Cl you get what you pay for.

I like getting good deals. I have plenty of space for snakes. If I luck out and get a dwarf, then cool if not more snake to love and an excuse to get more retics.

Again thank you for the links. When I got home and had a chance to really look at them and compare them to the diagrams provided they are matching up a lot closer to the dwarf retic. So maybe thy is what I have.
