Tub Sizes?
I'm looking into building a snake rack because I am enjoying my ball pythons a lot to where i would love to have more, but I can't stand having aquariums all over my room because they are space consuming. I have researched many different size tubs that are recommended by breeders, but they just seem too small and cramped to me. What are good size tubs for baby, yearling, and adult ball pythons that will not be humongous but my pets will be perfectly comfortable living in it?

for hatchlings though small adults you can use 28 quart, and for large adults you can use 41 quart

Thank you! I just got a big normal female and plan to put her in a tub so that helped me out a lot. Now to find a 41 quart tub :)

Re: Tub Sizes?
Okay, I just wanted to double check because i have heard similar sizes but just wasn't sure if they were too small. Thank you:)

This is my tub size list:
6 qt - hatchling
15 qt - under 500 g
28/32 qt - juv/adult
41 qt - big females
You can use the 28/32 qt for babies as long as you have hides and stuff to keep cramped (I.e. balled up newspaper or paper towels). They don't like open spaces.

These are good if you don't plan on using a rack:

And these are good if you do plan on using a rack:

here is a good video that compares 41 quart tubs

Babies do great in 6qt-15qt, juveniles 15-28qt and adults 32(males)-41qt(females).
I know these are the same sizes that are recommended, but there are reasons for it and it isn't just space. The animals feel more comfortable in the tighter space and husbandry is alot easier to maintain in them.
If you don't want to use tubs you could check out something like the Animal Plastics T-8's. They will give your snakes more space and they are stackable so they don't take up as much space as aquariums do. They also are made for reptiles so they will hold temps and humidity better.

If you plan on building a rack, I recommend IRIS brand tubs. They never change their tub styles so the bins are easy to replace. Sterilite and Rubbermaid brands change their styles all the time so its almost impossible to replace the tubs in the future (unless you buy spares now).
Lots of racks go to waste because people can't find tub replacements.

Re: Tub Sizes?
i never even thought of the tub styles changing! i'm looking at the vision tubs and was curious, is there is certain height they should be? for example, the hatchling tubs v-18 is only 3.5 inches tall. would the babies get overheated quickly?
-
what are you planning on using to heat the tubs? the only good way to heat tubs is under tank heaters and they don't affect the air temperature so tub height is irrelevant. remember that most vision tubs don't have lids as they are designed for racks.
-
Vision makes really sturdy CB-70 replacement tubs, too, which is what I use in my CB-70 rack. I prefer CB-70s for my largest females (over 3000 grams).

Use a thermostat.

If he's building a rack for his tubs, I'd assume he'd be using heat tape or heat cable, which whether it's belly or back heat, absolutely does raise air temperature. Same applies with a UTH...if you apply something that is designed to heat, the heat is not going to just stop at ground level. How much the air temperature is affected depends on a variety of things, from type of enclosure, size of enclosure, type/amount of substrate used, ambient room temps, etc...

I just picked up my Vision CB-70 rack today and will be moving females over to it after they start laying...definitely a nice rack.

Re: Tub Sizes?
i will definitely get a thermostat for the rack. As long as the thermostat is keeping the tubs at a constant temperature, do i not need to worry about it overheating then?

Re: Tub Sizes?
Herpstats are great, check out Spyder Robotics.

as long as the thermostat is set properly then no overheating will not be an issue

To be perfectly honest i use 41qts for my snakes, no matter their size, and they do fine. I just built a rack and designed it for 41qts. It will hold 7 tubs. Its the perfect size for my room and will fit anysize bp basically. My juvenile cinny is only 300grams but he does fine in it. I have 3 hides in it and crumbled up newspaper and hes never missed a meal.
With that said once i have my own place and have more room (and more snakes lol) ill definetly have seperate appropriately sized racks for males and females. But for the time being i know i wont get more than 7 so it works perfectly for me.

haha same here about the number of snakes. My dad helped me talk my mom into letting me get my first ball python, and after a little over 3 years, i finally got my first! i bought my first, adopted my second, bought my third, and my fourth was not planned but i still brought one home from the reptile show :) She is getting used to the fact that i am going to breed a couple of them when my females grow up, but i'm not sure how many more she will put up with. haha!

I keep mine in a 2 foot by 2 foot cage from day one. as long as you give them good hides it shouldn't be an issue, but if you ever get one that won't eat, a smaller temporary cage/tub is a good idea to have on hand.

Exactly. My little brother (lives at my dads house) got a bp and i kept it at my house for the first month to get her going since she was only 99grams. I had her in just an extra 28qt tub to begin with. No matter what she wouldnt eat in that so i put her in a 6qt. She ate the next day. By the time i gave her to my lil bro, after about a month, she was in a 12qt tub with no extra crumpled up newspaper and was eating rats no problem.
Some snakes are just more tempermental and need more time to adjust. On the complete opposite side i brought my cinny male home at around 150gms and had him in a 41qt and hes been doing perfectly fine since day one...

i find it ironic how people that dont have snakes always think that just because they are snakes, they all think alike, but snakes really do have their own personalities like dogs and cats. snakes just dont tend to curl up with you on the couch and answer to their names :)

Ive taught mine tricks. They come whenever i wiggle a rat at the end Of their tub. Then when i say ATTACK they get the rat. Kinda like a pokemon...

lol that's hilarious :) i need to teach that trick to my newest ball python. i wiggle the dead rat in front of her but she wont buy it for one second...she never refuses a live baby rat though!

Re: Tub Sizes?
Quick question...the Ball Python caresheet says for BPs up to 2', a 10gallon tank would be fine and that for adults, a bigger one is better...41qt is a bit over 10 gallons; is that big enough for adult BPs?
is the caresheet giving a bit bigger size than necessary?
also, if i were to use a plastic tub, what's the best way to make sure there is air circulation but the snake can't escape?
would cutting a large hole in the lid and taping a mesh screen to it work?
thank you!
-
While the volume may be close, the amount of floor space is greatly different. Height isn't important with BP's it's all about floor space. I keep mine in 4x2 foot cages
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...s/IMG_0459.jpg
I use a divider when they are small to put 2 BP's in 1 cage, them let 1 BP have the full thing when they are adults.
They are stackable as well

if you were to use a plastic tub, i would drill small holes in the sides. but be sure to not make a single one big enough for the snake to even get its nose through because thats all it needs to either get out or get stuck. my only concern with taping mesh screen would be that if there are any sharp edges, it could possibly scar your snake.

Best way to put holes in plastic tubs is with a sodering gun. It makes perfect size holes without cracking the plastic like a drill will. I use 2 tubs for balls. I use v18 tubs for hatchlings until they get about 500 grams. Then they move from those tubs to the freedom breeders i cb70 tubs. The cb70 allows me plenty of room for big bowls and hides. As long as your twmps and humidity can be controlled you can go as big as ya want with tubs
-
You can get a Soldering iron from walmart for $4. You can melt as many holes as you need, but remember, you can always add more. You can't take them away.
So the best way to measure how many holes you need is to look at your humidity.
Too much humidity needs more holes. Too less humidity means you melted too many holes.
This tub set-up tutorial is really good. So take a look at it to see what we mean.
