    Petsmart/petCo dinkers
Let's see what people have gotten from some of the big pet stores. I just stopped in to get some bedding for the rats and was looking at the balls they had. One (it was a male of course) looked alot like an Enchi!! Dory I didn't get a picture :( it was normalish looking on top then kinda pixelated to a salmonish color silverish eyes. If I didn't already have a male Enchi and a male Dinker to many I would have gotten him. I have my male (het red/black pastel/green pastel/cinnamon thing) whatever it is I'm only going to have one normal to put with him. Anyways...I would like to see hear about others petstore dinkers. Sorry my computers down, and I suck at posting anyways. Couple pictures in my gallery though. :)

Idk about dinkers, but I'm sure a lot of them are hets. I know someone who sells all his hets to Petco as normals. And this guy produces thousands of snakes every year.

Ya never know cause alot of big stores get their balls as cheap as they can which means they buy alot of imports so the chance of new blood is there

I got this nice female from an online classifieds ad and they said they purchased this animal from petsmart.
I just loved that clear belly of hers...not bad for $40 :D

Wow, those are very nice looking BPs. Our local stores never had any like those, although the employees at ours aren't the most caring of their animals. I hate going in because i usually leave pissed. Nice finds though, can't wait to see what they produce. :gj:

I used to work at Petsmart and we got a few babies in that looked interesting. My dinker boy (Tak) will be breeding this season once I get some size on him. He's around 230g right now and producing sperm plugs. Once he's up to 400 or so, I'm tossing him in with a 2000g female.

Her color is lighter than I can get in pictures, she is almost a sandy tan color, I know there is something there, just have to get her up to size and find the key.
:taz::taz::taz:She is also the mouse only girl so it adds to the challenge:taz::taz::taz:

My lil Petsmart snake. I assumed she was a male since it was coming from Petsmart, but I popped it yesterday and was surprised to find I have a little 68 gram girl (most likely, I'm no pro at it). I got her mostly cause they had a sale and I only paid $30 and I liked her flames and alien heads.

She looked much thinner and dehydrated when I got her, go figure... but has eaten like a champ and is looking in good condition now.

A "dinker" is a normal who shows some possibly unique/different traits - sometimes they can be genetic traits, other times they just produce normal normals. Rarely they can be dubbed as a new morph, once they've proven to be genetic.

I don't have any dinkers myself, except possibly the dark-colored baby I produced this season... some people here think he might be black pastel (split clutch), if not he'll be a good one to play around with next year. ;)

I was in a local Petco the other day and they had one that I swear was a pastel. We went back today just to look while running some errands and it was gone. I shoulda picked it up and took the chance for $40.

I asked one of the employees and she had basically no knowledge of snakes. She told me they don't get any information and any ball python just goes with the rest. According to her, people have come in and found "expensive" snakes. I don't know how true it is but we stop in there every once in a while just in case.

This isn't related to ball pythons but I did pick this up leopard gecko from the same Petco this week for $15. Another member says she looks to be a SHTCT.

I had the misfortune of running a petco for about a year while finishing up school... Terrible company, in every sense. Ugh. I personally won't spend a dime of my money there. Now that I got that out of my system... lol. While there, I did see some nice BP's come through as normals. Several pastels. A Mojave. Couple of Cinnamons. Couple of Spiders. And once I was almost positive we had a Savannah come through.

So yeah, sometimes it's worth checking out. And if any of you get a snake that could be worth hundreds, for fifty bucks from that miserable company, I applaud you! :D (yes, I'm a little bitter still. That's how much I hate that place)

You guys absolutely wouldn't be the first people to get a subtle morph from Petsmart/Petco. I have a friend who breeds and he has a female BP from Petsmart that he bought because he thought it looked very similar to a yellowbelly (has the arrow on the head and HEAVY flames, but not a lot of belly speckles).

Well, he was right! He just hatched a clutch from her (YB x YB) with two yellowbellys, one normal, and two ivory :D.

Bottom line. It never hurts to ask to hold the snakes at these stores. You may get a cool prize!

    Hi!

I'm totally clueless about patterns/morphs/hets, etc.

    Iggy came from PetCo.

    "What" is he?

Just another generic BP or something else?

[he's loved madly all the same, regardless]....:)

    TIA.

He looks like a nicely patterns normal. Unfortunately, like people have wrote, it's impossible to tell unless you breed him and try to prove him out :) Very cute pickup :D

He is very much loved, already.

I finally found a scale to weigh him and he's only 134 grams.

They sent me home with 6 fuzzy mice, of which he's eaten 3 ravenously, since Sunday, 9/25.

He seems skinny to me...I can feel his spine, sort of "pyramid-ish" on his back and it's 'crinkly' where he bends.

He's not at all round or chubby and doesn't seem to be gaining any weight although since I just got the scale today, I have nothing to compare his first weigh in to.

From everything I've read here, he's been pretty much underfed since his birth, the date of which I do not know.

[PetCo feeds their snakes 1 fuzzy per week]

He's about 18-20 inches long...we're not sure exactly because it's hard to measure a snake who doesn't want to be "straightened".

Now, today, I think he's "breathing too fast" but I can't remember exactly fast he was breathing, yesterday.......:(

[yes, I am a fretting, worrying, nervous first-time snake mom]

We've been battling the heat/humidity issue since day one.

I have an under-tank heater, red overhead heat lamps and it hovers around the mid-80s according to the digital thermometer right above his warm-side hide.

Humidity is around 50-ish but was into the 60s until hubby drilled too-big holes in the Lexan tank lid......

Now I've got another piece of Lexan over most of the holes to increase the humidity some.

Hubby loaned me his digital IR thermometer and the floor temps are actually higher than the tank digital says.

Iggy goes back and forth between the warm/cool side often and drinks after I cuddle him.

    He yawns, too.

I have a big blob of moist sphagnum moss in a hide in case he wants to go in it but so far, he's not interested.

I was going to try to make to a Repticon this weekend to get him rat pups but I'll buy them from PetCo if I can't make it.

I am so afraid he's not well and that I'm not taking care of him properly that I'm a wreck.
I've done nothing but read BP forums and websites non-stop since I got him.

[if you'd told me 2 weeks ago I'd be freaking out over my "beloved snake", I'd have said you were insane]

Any guess how old he is or if he's too 'skinny' for his length?

He just seems to be too thin, to me.

    :(

Here's my dinker girl. We got her 3rd hand, so we really have no idea where she came from, but a pet store would NOT be out of the realm of possibilities. She's the one that started my addiction, lol. And her colors just keep getting brighter and lighter with each shed. Can't wait until she's up to weight.

    Hey everyone.
I have three very beautiful dinkers all from petsmart.
I also missed out on one at a local Petco that was extremely dark and banded....
Heres my best looking example. He was actually purchased for me by a lady I ended up talking to about reptiles for about an hour. She would of rather seen him go to a good home than be stuck there.
    http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/...i/9a2772ea.jpg

He has an extremely pinkish, orange on his sides. He almost looks like an enchi to me?
    http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/...i/0dabe455.jpg

My other dinker is a female, she was my first ball python Ive purchsed from petsmart. She is extemely blushed across her entire body. And her head is extremely lighter than her body.
    http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/...i/d7c924ea.jpg

My last dinker is a 1300gram female I picked up. I bought her along with a N.E.R.D Lemon pastel male for 100$
She has a granite thing going on, and has an extremely yellow lower side.
    http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/...i/023e92c3.jpg

Can anyone shed any light on my babies? Any ideas what might be going on in any of them?

I don't breed, but would love to see what my 'guy' throws out (dunno the sex. will find out soonish). I think he looks yellow belly-ish. Flames between almost every alien (though some are a little subtle), clear belly that shows the flames start from the belly...

I would say no to a het red there. One of the defining characteristics of a het red is a black black. The back on the snake in question is to busy IMHO. Nice pattern tho.

I'm seeing less het red, and more "special" or lori ball...

Definitely something I'd want to breed, and then do a breed-back with an identical one.
