I was in a local Petco the other day and they had one that I swear was a pastel. We went back today just to look while running some errands and it was gone. I shoulda picked it up and took the chance for $40.

I asked one of the employees and she had basically no knowledge of snakes. She told me they don't get any information and any ball python just goes with the rest. According to her, people have come in and found "expensive" snakes. I don't know how true it is but we stop in there every once in a while just in case.

This isn't related to ball pythons but I did pick this up leopard gecko from the same Petco this week for $15. Another member says she looks to be a SHTCT.

I had the misfortune of running a petco for about a year while finishing up school... Terrible company, in every sense. Ugh. I personally won't spend a dime of my money there. Now that I got that out of my system... lol. While there, I did see some nice BP's come through as normals. Several pastels. A Mojave. Couple of Cinnamons. Couple of Spiders. And once I was almost positive we had a Savannah come through.

So yeah, sometimes it's worth checking out. And if any of you get a snake that could be worth hundreds, for fifty bucks from that miserable company, I applaud you! (yes, I'm a little bitter still. That's how much I hate that place)

You guys absolutely wouldn't be the first people to get a subtle morph from Petsmart/Petco. I have a friend who breeds and he has a female BP from Petsmart that he bought because he thought it looked very similar to a yellowbelly (has the arrow on the head and HEAVY flames, but not a lot of belly speckles).

Well, he was right! He just hatched a clutch from her (YB x YB) with two yellowbellys, one normal, and two ivory .

Bottom line. It never hurts to ask to hold the snakes at these stores. You may get a cool prize!

    Hi!

I'm totally clueless about patterns/morphs/hets, etc.

    Iggy came from PetCo.

    "What" is he?

Just another generic BP or something else?

[he's loved madly all the same, regardless]....

    TIA.

He looks like a nicely patterns normal. Unfortunately, like people have wrote, it's impossible to tell unless you breed him and try to prove him out Very cute pickup

He is very much loved, already.

I finally found a scale to weigh him and he's only 134 grams.

They sent me home with 6 fuzzy mice, of which he's eaten 3 ravenously, since Sunday, 9/25.

He seems skinny to me...I can feel his spine, sort of "pyramid-ish" on his back and it's 'crinkly' where he bends.

He's not at all round or chubby and doesn't seem to be gaining any weight although since I just got the scale today, I have nothing to compare his first weigh in to.

From everything I've read here, he's been pretty much underfed since his birth, the date of which I do not know.

[PetCo feeds their snakes 1 fuzzy per week]

He's about 18-20 inches long...we're not sure exactly because it's hard to measure a snake who doesn't want to be "straightened".

Now, today, I think he's "breathing too fast" but I can't remember exactly fast he was breathing, yesterday.......

[yes, I am a fretting, worrying, nervous first-time snake mom]

We've been battling the heat/humidity issue since day one.

I have an under-tank heater, red overhead heat lamps and it hovers around the mid-80s according to the digital thermometer right above his warm-side hide.

Humidity is around 50-ish but was into the 60s until hubby drilled too-big holes in the Lexan tank lid......

Now I've got another piece of Lexan over most of the holes to increase the humidity some.

Hubby loaned me his digital IR thermometer and the floor temps are actually higher than the tank digital says.

Iggy goes back and forth between the warm/cool side often and drinks after I cuddle him.

    He yawns, too.

I have a big blob of moist sphagnum moss in a hide in case he wants to go in it but so far, he's not interested.

I was going to try to make to a Repticon this weekend to get him rat pups but I'll buy them from PetCo if I can't make it.

I am so afraid he's not well and that I'm not taking care of him properly that I'm a wreck.
I've done nothing but read BP forums and websites non-stop since I got him.

[if you'd told me 2 weeks ago I'd be freaking out over my "beloved snake", I'd have said you were insane]

Any guess how old he is or if he's too 'skinny' for his length?

He just seems to be too thin, to me.
