That sounds like a Jerry Springer Show advert.

O'rly?
If you're making a show based on shock, fear and sensationalised portrayals of the reptile keeping community - we don't want to hear from you.
It is the vapid, skewed and inaccurate programs you make as a result of a pitch like that which are causing this hobby so much trouble and unfair regulation.
Get back to us if you ever grow a conscience and decide to provide a true representation of a facinating hobby.

I have exchanged a couple private messages with this person and I don't believe they are a troll. I believe the casting call is genuine. As to whether or not the program involved would remotely portray our hobby in a responsible and honest light, I couldn't begin to say. At least in this venue...for once...some level of program manager may actually see our concerns and realize the degree of skepticism and cynicism they have created in the real animal lovers they think they are marketing to.

Any idea WHICH channel it is? If it is someone from Animal Planet they can kiss my big fat you-know-what. If its NatGeo then a few folks might be interested.
-
Can we at least see some credentials and examples of shows you've produced/cast so an overly exited hobbits doesn't get conned into being on a show that completely misrepresents the hobby and casts keepers in a negative light for just for shock and awe to get good ratings?
You can't blame us for being so defensive. TV these days doesn't care about us and just wants to freak people out to get them to watch the STUPID shows that are produced on "killer snakes" and "snakes will take over the country" and crap along those lines.

Did you happen to get lost on your way to the highway?
Do you need us to show you the way...

This is not B.S. She is a good friend of mine that I grew up with since I was 12 years old. She asked if I could point her in the direction of reptile owners like myself who take pride in there reptiles an asked if I could pass the word along. I can speak to her directly to find out exactly what is gong to be on the show so everyone who is jumping down her throat needs to relax. Not everybody is out there to make this hobby look bad. She has been working on shows such as who the bleep did I marry and so on. Shes not some troll just looking to make the hobby look bad Hence why shes asking to people that actually know what there talking about and not just some person that will tell you a ball python will get 20 feet and kill you and your kids. Any one who has any questions about this please contact me and I will speak directly to her and find out exactly what will be on the show. Thank you.

She's in casting. My understanding is that casting has NOTHING to do with what is actually aired. Directors and producers and advertisers all call those shots, not casting.
She may be your friend, she may be a good person, but this will not end well for us or our hobby. If they wanted facts not sensationalism her request would not have been worded as it was.

Listen im not going to argue with you. I know the outcome of most shows they show on tv about reptiles and them making a bad name for it. I will speak to her directly today and make sure the show is about reptile keepers who actually know that there talking about and not just some random keeper than doesnt know there arm from there leg. No one is holding a gun to any ones head about this. She asked me to point her in the right direction to educated owners and thats what I did. If you guys feel its not going to turn out the right way thats fine as well. But dont think bc of past events that everyone is out to get us(reptile keepers).

I truly wanted to know what other animal shows she cast or worked on for reference to anyone thinking about contacting them. The original post was truly worded like a Jerry Springer advertisement, no offense.
Just because the show would be about reptile keepers who really know their stuff DOESN'T mean what they say will not be taken out of context or skewed to get the desired effect of the show that the producers are looking for. I seem to remember an old post about someone who's friend was asked to do a show on keeping a lot of reptiles and later found out the show was more about hoarders. I just think she should provide more information given the horrible media lately making reptiles look like monsters.

I agree 100 percent that is why I told to make an account and see how things go. I ve already spoken to her many times to let her know that if your company is going to turn the show into a making reptile keepers look bad you can forget about the whole thing. I would hate to see another show make us look bad. So I understand the concern about how she wrote things. No one has to agree to anything and I know that 99 percent of you are against it. If you guys feel that it will only turn out bad then simply delete the thread and that will be that. I figured if shes gotta get people for the show at least get people with the proper education on the animals rather than just anyone. Theres no hurt feelings from her or anything she just simply asked someone to point her in the right direction. Like I said before I totally understand where you guys\girls are coming from and why you guys\girls are so defensive.

First of all, the show "Who the bleep did I marry" is a sensationalist show that likes to play off people's fears of the unknown. With that as her credits, I'd suggest that anyone who likes this hobby stay FAR away.
Second of all, when the first three statements of the kinds of people she wants to cast are:

Well.. that's exactly the kind of sensationalist tabloid material that portrays the hobby in a bad light. Actively seeking out feisty hots, irresponsible owners, and individuals in relationships where snakes cause stress and problems is not showing what the hobby is about. "Crazy antisocial weirdos obsessed with giant, venomous, killer scaley pets next door, breaking up relationships and endangering your children" is exactly the kind of show I expect when I read the quote above.
A show about a boring neighborhood kid with a pet corn snake that was much more interesting when it was first bought than it is now at two years old, and some guy out of college trying to get his long-term pets to breed while holding a steady job in accounting.. now THAT would be accurate to 99.999% of the hobby.

Re: Extreme reptile lovers in florida-here is your chance to be on t.v. !!
Thanks Judy. I'm not a "troll" as you all have been putting it though it is a very clever name. If someone is interested and they submit info and we like what we see, of course we will be letting you know the series name and the network. We just are not allowed to post the name on forums. I hope you all can understand if you are interested, please do contact me cause I can fill you in on details.

Well they came to the wrong site then.

Also, please don't make this show reptiles and their owners already have a pretty bad rep.

What makes you believe that anyone on a reptile forum would agree to do this, particularly in light of this statement alone?

Like i said if you guys\girls dont like it simply dont post. Those of you who are interested contact her. That is all. Believe me im on you guys\girls side on not wanting another show making reptile owners look bad so dont get it twisted.

I hate to sound like this... but it's OUR site(nods to the site owners and mods of course). We post on any thread that concerns us and from the wording of her first post, it sounds like she wants 'JerrySpringer with Horrible Scaley Monsters! WOW!' and I don't see how anyone reading that blurb of advertising for a casting call would possibly be able to think "Hey, I bet they'll make a show that casts reptile keeping in a positive light!"
The recent trend in "reality" shows depicting ANY animal keeping in a severely negetive light is doing a great deal of harm to the reptile hobby. One stupid show on Animal Planet(or whichever channel) can un-do years and years of our attempts to educate the american public. One show reaches millions of viewers, showing them how crazy reptile lovers keep "feisty" venomous creatures, have huge monsters outgrowing the feeble attempts to cage them and then what can we do as herp keepers? Start all over in trying to convince the public Joe that no, we're not all keeping "deadly predators", that no, our ball python isn't going to cause a rift in our personal relationships, that no, we're not all trying to keep a croc in a baby wading pool next to the daycare?
If she really wanted to depict the reptile hobby in a positive light, I'd suggest thinking before posting such a sensationalized outlandish "casting call". And also, as mentioned above earlier, a casting director doesn't have much of anything to do with the content of the show. How could anyone be certain that they can contact her and give details about how many reptiles they own and NOT end up on a program being asked "How do you think you can possible contain over a DOZEN exotic serpents in your home?? Aren't you frightened for your CHILD?? How can you be UNCONCERNED??" Let me assure you, at that point NOTHING you say will look good for the hobby. Even if the person tosses the whole film crew out on their ear... the interviewer already has the crazy reptile hoarder on film.
I'm sure your friend is really nice. Maybe she has the best of intentions. I hope she does. But #1 she's not the producer. #2 this is MY hobby I love, not hers. I will air my doubts about the wisdom of a program, as will anyone else in the hobby who wants to. Most of the other posters here have covered all my own doubts and fears already.

The very first word in the title of this thread threw up red flags for me. That word wreaks of the sensationalist programming Animal Planet and other channels can't get enough of lately that I so despise... Needless to say, I will not participate, nor would I recommend anyone else here do so based on the wording in that post. I'd type more, but Theresa pretty much covered anything else I would have said in the post above.
