I hate to sound like this... but it's OUR site(nods to the site owners and mods of course). We post on any thread that concerns us and from the wording of her first post, it sounds like she wants 'JerrySpringer with Horrible Scaley Monsters! WOW!' and I don't see how anyone reading that blurb of advertising for a casting call would possibly be able to think "Hey, I bet they'll make a show that casts reptile keeping in a positive light!"

The recent trend in "reality" shows depicting ANY animal keeping in a severely negetive light is doing a great deal of harm to the reptile hobby. One stupid show on Animal Planet(or whichever channel) can un-do years and years of our attempts to educate the american public. One show reaches millions of viewers, showing them how crazy reptile lovers keep "feisty" venomous creatures, have huge monsters outgrowing the feeble attempts to cage them and then what can we do as herp keepers? Start all over in trying to convince the public Joe that no, we're not all keeping "deadly predators", that no, our ball python isn't going to cause a rift in our personal relationships, that no, we're not all trying to keep a croc in a baby wading pool next to the daycare?

If she really wanted to depict the reptile hobby in a positive light, I'd suggest thinking before posting such a sensationalized outlandish "casting call". And also, as mentioned above earlier, a casting director doesn't have much of anything to do with the content of the show. How could anyone be certain that they can contact her and give details about how many reptiles they own and NOT end up on a program being asked "How do you think you can possible contain over a DOZEN exotic serpents in your home?? Aren't you frightened for your CHILD?? How can you be UNCONCERNED??" Let me assure you, at that point NOTHING you say will look good for the hobby. Even if the person tosses the whole film crew out on their ear... the interviewer already has the crazy reptile hoarder on film.

I'm sure your friend is really nice. Maybe she has the best of intentions. I hope she does. But #1 she's not the producer. #2 this is MY hobby I love, not hers. I will air my doubts about the wisdom of a program, as will anyone else in the hobby who wants to. Most of the other posters here have covered all my own doubts and fears already.

The very first word in the title of this thread threw up red flags for me. That word wreaks of the sensationalist programming Animal Planet and other channels can't get enough of lately that I so despise... Needless to say, I will not participate, nor would I recommend anyone else here do so based on the wording in that post. I'd type more, but Theresa pretty much covered anything else I would have said in the post above.
