This place makes Petsmart look like Paradise on Earth
Went to my local petstore today, and I just about punched the manager. Not a single reptile in there had a hide. They had substrate and a water bowl, and a bright light, that I don't imagine provided much heat. The burmese pythons eyes were sunken in, from what I think a lack of humidity. The enclosures themselves were I guesstimated were around 10x12x8, and most of them were adult snakes. Every single ball python had alot of pieces of shed skin still attached. One in particular was covered in a white residue, that reminded me of the minerals left from tap water. They looked pretty skinny. I wanted to cry
I confronted who I believe to be the store owner/manager, whatever. I asked him why none of the reptiles had hides? He told me theres no room for them....yeah no ****!! when you keep them in a 10x12x8 enclosure, there's not going to be room. I told him that they were most likely very scared and stressed, having all that traffic walk by, a bright light shining down, and no where to hide. but its ok, he said "hey man, they're fine, don't worry about it." I just about hit him there.
Anyways, I don't know how rampant this problem is, maybe its common, maybe its rare to be treated this badly. But if you guys felt like giving them a ring, here's their google review page.

How would I go about reporting them? Something needs to be done.

Sad to say it's pretty much standard OP for just about every pet shop out there. :(
These guys only care about making money and doing it quick. They cannot be bothered to properly house the animals they get in, it would be cost prohibitive. At least that's what they all say.
Their main hope it to rotate animals in and out quickly, so the substandard conditions aren't too noticeable. When an animal ends up staying so long the poor conditions start to show, the hope then is either putting the animal on sale will move it, it will die and make room for new stock, or some poor sucker with a bleeding heart like you or I will pity it and buy it.
They don't much care which one happens, as long as that tank goes empty so a newer animal can be placed inside to wait for someone else to get in over their head.
Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do about it. You can call the BBB in your area and report them. You can occasionally involve the authorities if it's rampant and obvious abuse. The problem is of course, it's pretty low on the list of priorities for most places that could do something about it. Let's face it, when someone is shot on the streets of your town every 4 or 5 hours, some pets in bad condition at the local pet shop don't merit much worry.
The best thing I know to do is hurt their bottom line. Don't buy anything from them, no matter how small. Get the word out to your friends to avoid the place. Sometimes you can even involve the local paper to spread the word about the neglect. Big chain stores don't worry too much about isolated bad publicity, but a smaller private shop cannot afford a bad image, it could ruin them financially.
I share your frustration and your anger, but you'll drive yourself insane trying to correct it all.

There's not a whole lot to do about it unfortunately. +1 to the person above me, do NOT shop at the store and pass along the word.

Re: This place makes Petsmart look like Paradise on Earth
well im going to play devil's advocate here because someone has to, obviously if your going to report them be prepared for this...
are you sure about the cage sizes? because honestly most people would use 10 gallon tanks because their about as cheap as it gets, and they are usually 20x10x12, not ideal for an adult ball python obviously, but just want to make sure we are not over exaggerating. also this is a store, animals come in and out of there, they are just temporary cages, have you ever been to a professional reptile show?
why do you feel the animals need hides? are you observing their behavior? are they not eating? how could you tell they were scared and stressed?
Did you take temp readings? why do you feel the bulbs need to put out more heat than they are? how do you know the cage temps are not within tolerable limits
Now my real thoughts...
Only thing i'm surprised is you only harped on was about the hide, In reality lets pretend hes being a good store owner and observes that his snakes eat and have no negative effects to their behavior... why would you use them? most of my snakes do not have hides.
I would be more concerned with the dry sheds and which would be an obvious lack of humidity, since health problems can arise from them. also without knowing temperatures and a small tank most likely not having a big heat gradient, IF the temps are too high or low, the snake cannot escape them and this can again lead to health problems. That is what I would be discussing with the manager.

I was bored so I was reading some of the reviews that were on the Google site posted...apparently when the snakes need to escape the high temps they just escape the tank and head over to the fish section to cool down.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they were close to the correct sizes. They were all custom made cages put in the wall. It was built to fit the most amount of reptiles. I guess I'm looking at the hides mostly in that it never felt like they had a place to feel safe. They were all curled up in balls in the corner, with a bright light constantly shown down on them. And how well they shed being one of the good indicators of husbandry. I saw nothing to measure temps in there, so honestly they could have been anything, hell they may have been right, so it may have been me just assuming that since several things were off, this was likely off too.
I knew this store was bad, and I decided to go today out of pure curiosity. I didn't know it was this bad. This store is notorious in Albuq. As being a terrible pet store. We "rescued" a cat from them years ago. It was in terrible shape. So I'll see about reporting them to the BBB...but like you guys said, its no priority...its not like they beat their animals or intentionally kill them or anything...its just pure negligence, and innocent animals suffer because some people are too lazy run a pet store the correct way.
-
If given a hide, they will use it. With a bright light like that, they will use it 99% of the time. Stores take it away to make the animal visible so it will sell faster. Does it matter if it doesn't eat? Nope. It's the customer's problem.
These animal rights organizations should make themselves useful for a change and outlaw the sale of reptiles in pet shops because barely any take it seriously. Too bad they wouldn't be able to stop at just pet shops though. Doesn't the world suck?

ok well at least they got a plan, i see no problems here lmao

posted above - its tough to sell animals at a petstore that are nocturnal and hide all day. Not saying it's right...but thats why they don't get proper hides.

So, now, without any proof, people from states thousands of miles from this store are calling the BBB?
peta and hsus love people like you. I hope your charter memberships are all paid up.
Did ANY of you think to call the store, to ask ANYONE for pictures, to see if maybe the OP had an axe to grind, do ANY fact finding at all?
Or is it easier, just plain and simple not as hard, to jump on a bandwagon and start beating your chest over these injustices?
I suppose, being as how N.M. IS in the desert that maybe, just maybe, even with proper access to water in the cage, combining air conditioning and it's sucking moisture from the air and the desert itself giving up no moisture, those snakes with stuck sheds (and we have NO idea how much stuck shed is on how many snakes nor for how long it has been there) must be being terribly abused.
I would imagine that there are no heat guns available, that the snakes are never fed-shedding just happens you know, no need to feed-they are cramped into tiny (custom built hmmmm) cages, and we ALL know how much ball pythons HATE small spaces, and, knowing how all snake experts agree, especially the ones, expert wise, that have tons of experience (having kept as many as THREE snakes for as long as FOUR months guaranteeing not only vast amounts of experience of the highest degree and greatest accuracy possible to attain by hands on keeping) that keeping more than one snake in ANY container be it a custom made display cage or a tiny plastic tub, is WRONG.
Ummmm, yeah, ya see, the only thing WRONG here is that a bunch of you have gone off on .,..... nothing. No proof. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero.
Maybe this store is satan's sphincter. Maybe it isn't. Does anyone REALLY know?
I'm glad people like you didn't try to cop attitudes with me when I was working retail. Your face punching desire may have not had the results you anticipated.
Post some pictures if you want to verify your claims. As for the rest of you wagon jumpers, way to go, ra ra ra sis boom ba, what lovely cheerleaders you make, oh vacuous keepers of reptiles.

Oh yes, because I get a real real hard on, from making erroneous charges against pet stores on random reptile forums. I love putting pet stores out of business. It's how I get my kicks. I only waited 53 posts on here to express my beef with this particular one.....think before you speak.

It wasn't an attack on you, it was an attack on everyone jumping on the bandwagon because someone on the internet says so. If your going to report them you will need proof of actual neglect, not having hides is not neglect. Signs of illness or unhealthy animals would be the main thing. Humidity isn't even truly an issue if it doesn't cause any health problems... whats a little dry shed? obviously i can lead to problems, but itself is not something you can report on.
If you know anyone more experienced you could have them talk to the manager and explain some of this, or at least have them check it out. I mean the pet store by me used to do something things that were less than acceptable just because the guy has been keeping reptiles for 25 years, but was still using 25 year old information. A lot has been discovered since then and once you explain why we do things certain ways, he changed his ways. No reporting necessary, just simple explanation. If I owned a store and you started harping on me about hides, I would tell you the same thing he did.

I suppose hardons are VERY important to you.
Well, we all keep our brains somewhere, it's nice to know yours gets some fresh oxygen every now and then.
Perhaps if when you spoke you engaged your upper brain, then non hardon one, you may appear, possibly though it is doubtful judging from what I have seen so far, at least slightly intelligent and not as a raging boner looking for somewhere to explode.
You know, like you are now.

sigh, what wilomn was trying to say is that you simply should have tried to educate the store manager about why you feel the living conditions were inadequate. from the looks of it the op feels attacked as do most of the targets of wilomns replies so I've seen. sadly everything mentioned above is true about hides not being used because then the nocturnal animal wouldn't ever be displayed. No need for the sarcastically phrased responses, while you are seemingly educated and have an obvious care for the animals wilomn I do feel your approach when replying usually causes more drama then it would have if you had simply stated your advice and moved on.
but I do understand if that is just your nature and respect that may just be your way of helping, just think you'd be more helpful without the sly remarks is all :/

When I was a child I had a puppet. In his back was a coiled string. On that string was a ring of plastic.
When pulled, the puppet would talk.
How can I be faulted for seeing strings with rings and being unable to resist fulfilling their very reason for being?
How unkind would that be?
-
Bps are not display animals but pet stores do have to display them to sell them! I want to see what the animal looks like before I inquire about it. Education is the strongest weapon! Teach them about stuck sheds and how to remove them! It may not be done on purpose, it may be just a lack of knowledge! They can't ban pet stores from selling them or we would get banned from owning them!

Ah yes, the old think with your boner speech. Everyone on here I've met has been helpful but you, because you're so "avant garde." You don't roll with the rest of the crowd, do ya? If someone says jump, you don't say "how high?" you say "why should I?" And its because your so unique, and you were told that all of your life, so it merely reinforced that. But somewhere down the line, you realized you were nothing special, and that you were just an as*****. So you vented it it the only way you knew how, by being one, on the internet. I figured there would be better places on the internet to troll and be rude, than a reptile forum, but to each his own, I guess.
I can understand wanting to play devils advocate with me, because likely you have seen hundreds of people like me, complaining about pet stores, crying abuse. Fine whatever, but don't do it at the expense of animals. You won't hurt my feelings if you ignore me, which is what you should have done. But its animals that get hurt in the process, by calling bs on me, without proof yourself. The store won't get hurt from BS claims by me.

The depth and breadth of your understanding of my poor tired diatribes are truly amazing. I would never have guessed, based on you posts, that you were in any way intelligent enough to comprehend my lacks, flaws, and general unpleasant demeanor.
And your ability to fire right back at me, obviously using both brains, why that..... astounding is the only word that comes to mind.
I mean seriously, armed with only a raging boner and a LOT of testosterone you have totally and completely turned the tables on me, making me look quite the fool for being unwilling to take at your word anything you say.
You have completed befuddled me with your usage of more than one language, intimidating me ruthlessly, having me so willing to cower in the shade of your overwhelming dominance that were I to try to express my feeble worthless, "avant garde" was it, thoughts, I would surely trip over my own tongue, or fingers as it were.
You are, of course, correct that animals should not be abused and shame shame shame on me for neglecting that (unproven) fact in my ceaseless effort to build my own minuscule self esteem by pouncing on what I mistakenly assumed was yet another buffoon come here to try to himself be built by tearing down that which he does not understand or comprehend.
Ironic ain't it?
I must publicly commend you for bringing me to me knees, for showing me, and everyone else, all 12 of them reading this thread, just how abhorrent I am. And mean too, your whining has done NOTHING but show how I truly target the weak, the sick, the attention seeking weeny whackers, mercilessly not because they deserve it, as they do, as you know, but because were I to choose any other opponent I would so thoroughly have my ass handed to me that my ability to sit in comfort would be compromised for weeks to come.
Well done, well done indeed.
I shall endeavore to no longer shame you by my presence, my attitude, my pitiful attempts to improve my own lot by tearing down that of others so undeserving, such as yourself.
Your service here shall go neither unnoticed nor unappreciated, of this I most humbly assure you.

It's a reptile forum, if you want intellectual stimulation, go read a book. Whereas the prose of your last argument added nothing to the conversation, except you ridiculing , in a satirical, word laden fashion over the internet. Yes, you have managed to impress members of a reptile forum, with your clever, witty and off beat banter, that doesn't seem to grace this forum very often. Need I digress, however by saying that you won't be winning any awards or thanks for your services, by impressing and insulting members of a reptile forum.
No, my posts don't offer anything to the world of academia, or animal husbandry, nor have I pretended they would. I'm attempting to learn how to take care of my ball python, and in the process I saw animals, whom I believed to be stressed and in pain, and if I'm the idiot for saying something about it, then fine, I suppose I just didn't expect it from this crowd.

Excellent well my self flagilating compadre (hey look, two languages lol) you are able to see you lacks.
You, with your lack of knowledge and experience have tried to get people in an uproar because you, with your lack of knowledge and experience wanted to show off, to be liked, to be the guy who outed a terrible thing. The fact that you have NOTHING to back it up BUT your lack of knowledge and experience are readily apparent to those who DO have knowledge and experience. But you don't like hearing that, on this reptile forum or anywhere else.
How is this anyones problem but yours? Why should anyone, myself in particular, care that you are all butthurt (an apt description if ever there was one) about the fact that YOU jumped the gun?
So you went off prematurely, big whoop. I hear it happens to those who lack knowledge and experience. Perhaps if you slowed down a bit you wouldn't embarrass yourself quite so much. Perhaps if, instead of trying to get people in an uproar, calling in all sorts of authority figures to make you look and feel better, you DID SOME DAMN RESEARCH on your own, nice guys like me wouldn't use you for toilet paper.
You know?

Re: This place makes Petsmart look like Paradise on Earth
Every day I go for a walk. Eight days a week.
This evening, I came upon an open bag of Skittles laying on the ground.
I could have picked up the trash... But I did not, I kicked it instead as if I did not see it in my way. This is suppose to make me feel...not so guilty.
But what caught my eye wasn't the abandoned Skittles left in the sack scattering along the sidewalk...it was the fact that they where M&Ms rolling out of the Skittles bag.
True story.

Re: This place makes Petsmart look like Paradise on Earth
I may get bashed for saying this (the Humane Society is working against us for some reason), but they may be able to step in. I contacted the local H.S. about our petsmart store and they talked the store manager into actually taking proper care of their reptiles. I travel alot for work, and usually stop at pet stores when I'm out there, and our petsmart is alot more caring than most.

Local humane societies are different than the HSUS, which doesn't run ANY humane societies. Local ones are great, they can help with things like this, at least usually.

Just for the record, I work at a commercial pet store, and you are wrong.
