Just got her
Temps are perfect. I am so happy! I am greatly appreciative of the BP community for the help in picking this snake and for the advise on how to arrange its husbandry, I am in debt to this community!

Re: My BP!!!!
Hey guys.
If my blood ate on Monday this week (she ate at 2:40 PM), would I be able to pick her up?
I was wondering because I got her 2 new hides both identical and I want to get them in with her ASAP
She has 2 differen't shaped hides that are 2 different colours atm.
What do you guys think? Should I just wait until tomorrow morning to be safe on a solid 48 hours, or should I go for it today?
-
Re: My BP!!!!
its fine to handle after for a few mins to stick another hide in, by handling people generally refer to actually getting them out for prolonged periods just after eating which is a no no. But for you to just introduce a new hide or change the water etc a brief handle even directly after feeding is fine.
I have to handle my large bloods as I feed them in a seperate container and have to stick them back in their enclosure shortly after they have finished.
will take a few minutes I think you will be fine :gj:

Thank you very much!
Hoping to get more pics soon (Saturday - sunday at earliest)
Gonna begin to try to tame her down
While I was putting in her new hides today I just lifted her fast about 3 inches from the end of the tail, cuz I needed her off the ground for like 20 seconds
So she curled up and struck at me. She is very nippy (didn't tag me though!)
so when I start handling her ill post the bite pics and some pics of her aswell
-
Re: My BP!!!!
You shouldn't be lifting a blood by the tail like that. That might be why she was cranky, plus she's new and insecure. In a week she might have an entirely different attitude. On handling, bloods need a lot of support because they are very terrestrial animals, and their bodies are just so heavy. They won't coil around you for support like a ball python would. Also, some bloods get nippy when they get touched anywhere near their tail, so you might have one of those. Don't try "taming her down" until you've had her for at least a week, or that's just going to overstress her.

Yeah I realize now that was a mistake. even for lifting her sor less than a minute I probably should have lifted her with more support.
Also, on saturday/sunday itll be about 9 days ive had her. I may wait longer because ive been doing so much to the tank, from moving due to space issues to checking ground and air temps
Im trying to stop touching the tank entirely but its hard when the temps are either 4 degrees to high or 2 - 3 degrees to low
Humidity is good though!
-
Re: My BP!!!!
Yeah just be careful~. By 9 days and already having eaten she's probably adjusting fine. She may still be afraid of you though so keep any handling short for a while. And don't grab her tail. :)
If temps are swinging that much have you considered a tub? That could prove to be more stable. That's actually a lot of variance considering 78-83 is pretty acceptable. Yours is really swinging between 75 and 87 degrees?

Well ambient temps are VERY stable. Never above 83 and never below 78.
Ground temps I have only started to see yesterday because I bought the probe for one of the digital thermometers I got
Thats when I discovered it was 85 - 87 (87 in the side she was in, 85 in the one she wasn't in)
At this VERY moment, I have the probe (which is most likely inacurate seeing as after reading the instructions tells me that its not acurate unless you suspend it by 1 inch above when you want to measure) under/ a little bit inside her hide
and its reading 78.6 - 79. So thats much better. and thats with only the heat lamp on. If I want to raise that temp I can because I put up 5 nails to control the heat lamp without a 2nd thermostat
And the thermomstat I have wotn work cuz its an On/off :( but the nails are working pretty good :)
And ofcourse, when I start handling her it will be short, and no more handling by the tail lol!
edit:
about the tub, currently I dont have the money to buy one. Unfortunatly it looks like she is going to have to out grow the tank before I will have any money that I can use for myself
Long story short, parents have financial problems and im giving some help. Im hoping to find a second job though
so we'll see :)

Re: My BP!!!!
Wewt!
I just switched her to newspaper. Had to hold her twice (once out the tanl, once in) and she didnt even curl up to strike!
I must be doing something right lol! (only sayin this because I always feel im doing something wrong with snakes lol)
-
Re: My BP!!!!
ask around maybe some one will have something suitable in a tub locally to where you live, parents often use them for putting kids toys in and various stuff you may strike lucky.
You want to get rid of the glass tank asap and get a tub and life will become much easier to control.
maybe a member on here might have a spare wonthurt to ask around.

Hey guys. I am going to be going to pick up some food for my blood on Friday. She is currently on large mice
I want her to get on rats NOW to make my life easier for the future. What size rat is equal to a large mouse? Thanks.
(actually to be honest, I dont know if it was a large mouse I fed her. Lets say medium to large)

Re: My BP!!!!
NEW PICS!!!!
She was roaming after I had to take her out to put in her new thermometer with a probe! So I got some pics. She is still roaming, checking out the enclosure
Temps are fine, and she ate 2 days ago so im 100% sure she is just curious about her surroundings
Anyway, here are the pics!

Before and after photo's of her setup:
BEFORE

AFTER
(you cant see it in this pic but there is a third thermometer up in the far right corner with a white wire leading under the newspaper to a probe right behind her hide for ground temp readings)
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1269/img0351m.jpg
the one you see in the left, rectangle thermometer is ambient ONLY and humidity.
The one down to right oval thermometer is ambient and with a probe. currently has the probe mode on and is under the hide closest to it.
Enjoy! Going to upload to my gallery soon aswell

Re: My BP!!!!
OMG SHE JUST SNEEZED
WHAT DO I DO
I dont have a vet near me and im flat broke!!!
HELP
IM FREAKING OUT
She opened herm outh wide and sneezed
No bubbles coming out of the nose or mucus from the mouth or anything
HELP!!!
Humidity is perfect at 65 - 70 how could this have happened!!!
IM GOING TO CRY :tears: :tears: :tears:
EDIT: could it have been a hiss?
:tears: I hope it was a hiss
-
Re: My BP!!!!
What were you doing when she "sneezed"? It certainly could have been a hiss, but to be safe I'd definitely keep watching her. You've only had her like a week right?
Also, I can't really tell from the pics.. is there duct tape INSIDE the enclosure? Or is that on the wall?

I was kinda checking the thermometer that was near her. She was facing me. I was backingo ff tho cuz I didnt wanna spooke her
Also the duct tape is outside, aswell as the paper its attached to :)
Also I picked her up twice to check her out now
Ive had her roughly a week yeah
I looked VERY closely at her nose and mouth. nothing out of the ordinary
-
Re: My BP!!!!
Okay, well, it's hard to tell if you didn't witness it, but for now I would watch her very carefully. Since your hand was in the cage and she was watching you, it sounds like it may have been a hiss, but still keep your eye on her.
Did it sound like she was pushing it out?

Kinda... It almsot sounded like sand paper rubbing together. but much quieter.
My hand wasn't in the tank, But I was very close to it. I had my head close to the glass to read the temps.
Thanks, ill pick her up once a day for inspection

Re: My BP!!!!
YouTube - Jed The Blood Python Not In A Good Mood.
If that's what you heard, it was most likely a hiss.

My short tail will sharply exhale once when I startle him. I guess it might sound like a sneeze? He's opened his mouth at me when he felt threatened, as well. Since you were in there messing with her I wouldn't immediately freak out. Just keep an eye on her and listen for her making noises when you aren't disturbing her.

okay, Yeah my head was very close to the glass and hse was facing me
I greatly hope thats what it was
I will be monitoring the sound in there. I keep hearing the paper rustle but other than that nothing unusual
Thanks again, I really hope you are right!!!

Re: My BP!!!!
I really hope it was that, too. You should get a vet fund together as soon as you can though, never know when you might need it. In 10 years I've never had to take a snake to a vet, but I keep a fund just in case. Never know if a feeding will go wrong, the power goes out when you're on vacation, etc.
You could probably make an ad in the "for free" section of your local craigslist for a small tub, too. I have loads of tubs I just don't use anymore, for snakes and for storage, and I'm sure others do too. I'd give you one if you were closer!

Thanks! I appreciate that you would help me out lol, I wish I was closer
Im going to start saving for a vet fund but im sure it was nothing. I havent heard a peep from her since and I can see her head and dont see any bubbles or anything from the mouth
My temps and humidity are also PERFECT
84.1 at the moment on left side, 84.5 on the side with the hide that shes in
Ambient is 84.2
Humidity 70%
(keep in mind this is all without anything heating. just room temp doing the work, if I had my UTH or lamp on im sure it would be over 90)
So im sure its fine, but I WILL for sure be making a vet fund. No doubt about it
-
Re: My BP!!!!
A steady 84 on each side is still a bit high
Ive had animals not eat when subjected to steady temps that high
This is just my experience

How can I get it down?
Its just room temp and nothing heating
What can I do to lower it?

Re: My BP!!!!
Is it a particularly hot day? What's the temperature outside the enclosure? Is he in the same room as a computer or something else that produces quite a bit of heat?
I wouldn't think a day at 84 now and then would be detrimental, provided it does get cooler. I have 84 days at room temp now and then without refusals, but my sample pool is only one animal. 2kdime would know better than me (and I believe he's talking about constant temps at 84, so if it cools down tomorrow or whenever it shouldn't be an issue).

YES. it is an EXTREMELY hot day.
Usually without any heating its at 79. Today no heating and its at 84. Althought it does reach 84 for a few moments randomly when I have the lamp running but never stays there for long
Theres a computer in the room but produces almost zero heat. I use to be all abourt this comp so I have special cooling fans in it and an external fan pushing hot air out the back towards the door (was big on gaming before I picked up my snake)
This is just a very hot day, itll go down :)
If it doesnt by tomorrow what could I do to cool it down? Put my big fan closer to the tank?
-
Re: My BP!!!!
Do you have AC? Keep the doors open, and run a fan if that doesn't work and AC isn't enough. I know some people don't like running the AC too much because of all the energy. Even a couple days at 84 shouldn't be the biggest deal as it should cool off at night anyhow, but we have July and August around the corner and that's when you might need to bust out a fan on some days. Last year my room temps got up to 87 during those months, so be ready.

Yeah I have my fan on, and unfortunatly the air conditioner downstairs doesnt affect the upstairs at all.
My parents have a air conditioner in their room, so Ill test that out, ill keep my door open, put the fan in the doorway facing into my room and keep my window open
That should do it, I hope
-
Re: My BP!!!!
Well if it's really hot outside the window might make it worse. Everything else sounds fine.
-
Re: My BP!!!!
Purty Girl! Congrats.
Things to consider: You really need to watch that your humidity is correct with bloods, which can be tricky in an aquarium.
Do you have a bowl of water for her to soak in?
Also Bloods tend to drink copious ammounts of water and therefore the urinate a lot to... Keeping repticarpet clean will most likely prove to be a big challenge.
Bloods can be a bit more sensitive to their environment than ball pythons so make sure you are diligent about watching your temps and humidity.
I keep Balls and Borneos... they are both Awesome animals!
Best of luck with Her!!!!
